Atlanta, GA

Terribly belated blog entry for a great visit to Atlanta, GA. Spent the morning with folks at Turner, then met a rowdy bunch of music enthusiasts at the Mellow Mushroom.

MellowMushroom.jpg

Very animated conversation over pizza and beer. Some local radio promoters, musicians, technologists, bloggers, web designers... then headed out for some live music...

Wound up at Eddie's Attic. Very cool, old club, for a solo performance by Darden Smith. Eddie's attic is a long standing club that has been home to some great local musicians. Home base for the likes of John Mayer, Billy Pilgrim, Shawn Mullins, among many others.

As with so many of the southern towns I've been, there's clearly a sense of musical history.

Unfortunately, I had to cut the evening short for a last minute interview. Sorry guys. I'm going to have to come back through and do it right. But thanks for keeping me company.

Got up early on Saturday to get over to Athens, GA. Blog coming shortly...

I can't believe that you do this by hand. I assumed a task of this magnitude was created with some snazzy algorithm. You guys blow me away, and I'm listening to an "Iron and Wine" station I just created right now.

where are the women (sex FEMALE on all my public applications, for fun (entertainment) or not in this equation?)?
Does PANDORA think it can survive w/o females analyzing/contributing to this phenom? I THINK NOT! I'll invest my hard earned money w/a "human friendly" company.......can you dig it?

Posted by: Nan at June 30, 2006 08:00 PM

You guys are true visionaries. Take a simple idea, and execute it perfectly. Fine tune it using input from users, and continue to offer more truly valuable features (as opposed to new features nobody actually uses, like a certain company in Redmond is famous for). I'll go on record now as saying that Pandora's long term impact on Internet music will rival the impact Google has had on search engines. This is going to be an amazing process to watch as it develops. Keep up the great work!

Guys,
you are one step ahead of the radio. Thanks for the best ever "radio listening" experience:)

I love what you do. You should include some songs of the spanish singer: JOAQUIN SABINA
Thanks

Savannah is mostly dead, but there's a great band that plays from time when its members feel like it: Superhorse. Try this link. http://www.myspace.com/superhorse

They really are good. And Mo Tucker played with them a few times, which was cool.

Kevin Rose is also in GAM whihc I don't know if they are even a thing anymore. But they were great in their day. Here's a video from that google thing; http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6975852960770763792

Nan, the scroll column on the right of your web browser. See that thing? Well if you scroll down a few blog entries you will find a small expose on some of the woman analyst that work for Pandora. I'm sure there are more, since Pandora has just started doing a weekly blog on the actual people/musicians that do the analyzing.

It's rude to make accusations and assumptions, especially when the answer to your blunt and rude question is right in front of you.

In case you can't figure out the scroll function of a web browser here is the URL to the blog.

I just noticed that we can now go backward and see previously played songs. Thank you!

This is so much better then Launchcast. I used to be a Launchcast devotee until I heard of Pandora. The rating system is simple, and real, live people analyze the music (I think). Oh, and the sound quality is FABULOUS! Thank you so much!

Tim & Lucia,
May I interest you in adding classical music?
The range of jazz is splendid.
What genres of music are included, excluded?

I just have to make this comment -

I was flicking between my indie and hip-hop stations, and the thought suddenly struck me there was a song, the most played in my entire iTunes library, that I just HAD to create a station from.

I'm about half a click away from doing so, and then guess what comes up?

That very song. Wow, guys.

Hey Pandora,

I really like the idea of the Backstage, so people can know a bit more about Pandora and about the songs they like. I really wonder, how many users does Pandora have registered? How many come on per day? Does the staff listen to Pandora music too?

Sincerely,

Walter

Thank you for being here. My work days were so blah, my office can't recieve any type of waves so radio is out of the question my CD is down for what seems like eternity..Then I found Pandora.....Thank god, Thank you. You are appreciated

Posted by: maria at July 6, 2006 01:47 PM

This is so great! I really love Pandora. Just some suggestions:

It'd be nice to have a few more levels of like/dislike for a song. Like, "I really don't like this song, I don't like this song, take it or leave it, I like this song, I really like this song." Also, I'd like to be able to put why I dislike/like a song, whether it's for the song or for the lyrics. I might love the sound of the song, but find the lyrics offensive, and it'd be nice for there to be a difference.

The one click rating system is great, and I don't think it should be made more complicated, but if someone were to want these options, they could be found under "guide me", like under an "advance options" tab or something, so that those who don't care don't aren't bothered, but those who want to can have access to them.

Keep up the good work!

Posted by: Lauren at July 6, 2006 04:37 PM

Goodness, Pandora is rather fantastic. It recently helped me get through two nights in a row of work, i only had to listen to one song twice. Ha! That was really quite impressive.

Suggestions: Everything you do, but more I guess. I think I agree with most of the comments here - optional advanced preferences would be awesome, so you can to an extend say *why* you're enjoying a song or not enjoying a song

Also, is there a way to browse the genome project? For example, before you create a Radio station, is there a way to travel through musical similarities with a map or just text files, without listening to the music? That would be most awesome.

But of course these little suggestions are just a way of making an awesome internet&music revolution even more awesome.

I'm from Edinburgh, Scotland, and hardly anyone knows about it here, but I am rapidly spreading the word, it's amazing how you only need to mention it to someone to get them hooked. It's like people have been waiting for this to arrive all their lives. A million thank yous. Do come and tour the UK when you can.

sorry i missed you while you were here in atlanta. please make sure you let me know when you're coming back, please. i love music and i have two stations, one for my old pop gold hits of the 70's and another for my flavorful sample-happy hip-hop mix. rock on, boys! (and ladies)

Two suggestions: 1)get out of rut and involve women. You'll like it, trust me. 2) How about some classical?

Oh, I love Pandora. And you saw Darden Smith? Yum. When are you coming to the west coast? There's some good stuff happening out of Seattle, Portland, and even Nevada!

Meanwhile, thanks for this - my friend's a radio music programmer who's coming to town to reformat one of the local radio stations. I've printed my list of bookmarked songs, and he's planning to use a lot of them in his programming choices. Better still, I'm hoping he and I can hang out and just listen to samples of each of the songs, make notes, and then buy the music for converting to either .wav or .mp3 for the station. It'll be great - thank you, Pandora!!!

Also, it is too bad you didn't stay until Sunday for the Unplugged in the Park performances. 99x puts up a good show of some acoustic folks who are up-and-coming and very good. Last night showcased Butterfly Stitch and Sam Thacker...great performances. Check out some ATL talent! www.myspace.com/butterflystitch and www.samthacker.com

I love the site. I certainly was surprised to see one of my tracks pop up! It was kinda cool to know that someone, somewhere out of Australia has a copy of the Melbourne Live Compilation CD. That's very cool! One suggestion...could you accept good quality mp3 submissions? Sending CDs around the world starts to get costly, where I can send an email in a matter of minutes!

Keep up the exceptionally good work, I really think it's amazing!

Pandora absolutely blows me away. This is the most exciting development in music in decades. I am spreading the word religiously. Please keep up the good work.

I agree with the previous poster. You are the next Google - instead this time completely re-inventing the music experience. I would bet that Clear Channel has to be shaking in their boots, fearing what could happen to corporate radio if the public learns about this service en masse.

I will support this web site in any way I can...utilize the services/products that may be advertised..etc

Thanks again!

Oh BTW, I wrote in this blog because I live in Atlanta.

If you're in the mood for lobster, clam chowder, and a plethora of underground music afficionados, stop by Boston as you tour around. Sure, we have commercial radio for the masses, but schools like MIT, Harvard, Boston College, Emerson and BU all have stations on the dial (and online) featuring practically every genre of music that flies under the radar.

I would personally do advance work to make sure you had quality audiences and groups of conversationalists to speak with. As well as spots for live music.

Let me know when you'll be in town...

Posted by: Phil at July 11, 2006 11:41 AM

Hi!

And the best thing about Tims tours is that some of us can see him live, and can tell him what we want. Mh, maybe its just the second best.

The best is that he implements our wishes. Big thank you!

One of our forum members is going to meet you in SF, and then you can expect to hear something :-)

See you here (you're also welcome, Tim.):

just a quick note to everyone to let you know that we read these comments all the time. Thanks for the great continued feedback and support. We'll definitely hit Boston (even if it isn't much of a college town...), also back to Atlanta for sure, didn't have enough time there. Kind of completely missed the Summer festival wave - never again. Planning to pick the trip up again in the SE and travel up through the Carolinas and Virginia. Also thinking about Colorado, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania, Arizona and many, many more. We're just getting started here.

Man, lobster and clam chowder sounds really good right now...

hello

thanks for an interesting site - well done - but i'm here to complain...

i gave it smoosh as a starting point, and i note that it's reasons for playing various selections, including smoosh themselves, are awfully condescending.

it would seem that your analysis is rather limited, and i would earnestly suggest you find someone who actually gets smoosh to rewrite your assessment of the band.

either that or your system isn't smart enough to handle something as unique and as important as smoosh.

thanks anyway - nice try - better luck in future.

Hi,

I scanned quickly at work so forgive me if someone has already mentioned Churchill Grounds on Peachtree Street in Midtown Atlanta as a great place for listening to jazz. I said listening not talking through sets! Unlesss you are talking to the players in that old school "play it brother, sing it sister" kind of way, keep quiet please. You don't hear much of that call and response anymore just idle distracting chatter at places like Chastain Park. Miles would most definitely have walked offstage had he ver palyed live at Chastain. Today's audiences seem perplexed by jazz, unless it is that guy with the long curly hair. Atlanta is not a real jazz town, jazz clubs come and go, but the various music festivals and the local colleges provide an opportunity to hear really fine jazz. Ede Wright is a band to watch, and there are some wonderful female jazz singers, here too. The hotal lobbies and lounges have jazz artists who can play... How do i know so much? My Mom grew up in Harlem in the 1940s; I grew up in Chicago and San Francisco. Smile. I know my jazz - it is the soundtrack to my life.

A love supreme to all

OK, I had heard about Pandora and tried it once a couple of months ago for a minute or two and then forgot about it, for some mysterious reason. I looked again this morning and I've been stuck here for three hours creating stations and discovering new music. Thank you thank you thank you! I've been doing my own version of these stations with my ipod playlists for two years now (mixing artists from different genres like Leo Kottke and Agoria, for example), but that doesn't help you find music you've never heard before.

One suggestion for a new feature, unless you've got it already and I just haven't found it: combining stations you've already created. I have separate stations of mostly jazz, rock, or techno stuff, but it would be nice to combine all these into one "all of Ted" station, without having to type in all the artists and songs again. Maybe an "add another station to this station" option or something along those lines. Maybe I'm just too lazy.

Finally: I love David Holmes' soundtracks (Out of Sight, Ocean's Eleven, etc.), but you only have one album from him. I'll keep looking to see if you get the rest signed up!

Hey, I absolutely love this site, I have been totally addicted to it for 2 days now (including ignoring my roommates and not wanting to go to work! thank god I don't have speakers on that computer!). Anyways, just a suggestion, there should be an option to consolidate all your radio stations in to one as yet another radio station! Thanks so much for doing this, it is the greatest and I have told every other music lover I can think of!

Posted by: Jen at August 14, 2006 02:55 PM

HEy, if you're still planning to go thru Georgia, or if you happen to go thru again, why not Augusta & specifically The Blur Horse venue.

It's not just a soundstage but it's also a video and audio recording facility and they've been getting some top notch local and regional talent in there, not to mention recording on the fly.

Oh, and what about a comedy channel for PANDORA?
You know sometimes I'm in the mood to listen to something to brighten up my spirits.

Posted by: Edmond "The Lurch" Kida at August 16, 2006 07:48 AM

I listen to Pandora about four hours every day. This replaces FM, Satellite, iTunes radio, and cable music selections. I've been hoping for something like this in my lifetime.

In Georgia, call the owner of Atlanta Institute of Music and talk to Nite (spelling???), the owner of the school. He'll know not only local music, but great talent.

Also, check out a guitar player named Steve Cunningham, while in town.

Please add Neil Schon and Andy Timmons to the library. They are smoking guitar players on the Steve Vai label.

Thanks!!!

I left something out of my last message. Put Brian Hughes into your library, He is a great Canadian Jazz guitar player. Also, you loaded in about five Bob James albums and left out the best one. Add in "Grand Piano Canyon". Thanks again for all you have done!

Hey guys! I have been telling all my friends about this great website... the only complaint most of them have is that your Metal variety is kind of short... you either have the bands and cds everyone already has or play the bands no one wants to listen to... maybe if you went out there and grabbed some more a little less mainstream acts that really know what they are doing... you can help us find new music and help them get their name out there! Thanks for creating this and know i will continuously listen!

When you guys come back to Georgia, please consider Macon on your tour. The radio stations here leave lots to be desired (for example, one station went "All-Christmas" on Halloween). Not to mention there are three colleges/universities in Macon, and several more nearby. Add that Macon is home to the GA Music Hall of Fame, and I think it would be a great stop. I am a lover of smooth jazz, I live in Atlanta but from Chicago and LOVE WNUA, but its a radio station and they talk too much!! What makes it even worse is they either don't tell you who the artist is or they play 4 or 5 songs in a row and you can't figure out which song you liked was played so you never know who the artist was. I have DirectTV and they have Watercolors but that can get droll and I then have to rely what I have in my own collection. When I am working I like hearing smooth jazz consistently. I do web designing and music tends to inspire me, but my concentration gets broke up when I go through too many changes with the music. With PANDORA I put in the musicians that I like and PANDORA keeps it moving. If I don't like the music I hit the forward button and I hear another great tune. You all have also played music that I have not heard before and its nice selections. I am on the computer creating web pages until early morning and its nice to hear smooth jazz while I am working. I tell anything that has ears about PANDORA. Thanks and mwah to whomever came up with the idea.

Hey if you ever need to split th task of going to shows, meeting fans, meeting bands and grabbing new music hit me up I will gladly do it for just the coverage of expenses. (Though future pay would not be bad either.) Just a thought this could be a position for interns, journalist majors or those that are (like me) just crazy about music.

While Atlanta is a huge music mecca....its hard to find radio stations playing more mature sounds in the local area. Such as smooth grooves, R&B, Jazz....its not all just hip hop.
Thank goodness for Pandora radio.

Beware the urge to ask for Atlanta's opinion on music. I was born in Atlanta and lived there for over 40 years. Whenever a good radio station emerged, they would state, "We want to be your radio station....tell us what you want to hear." Within months, another great music potential would die.
WQXI, Z-93, then they even asked for a new name- what did they get?....B98.5. It amazes me, it is certainly strange, but it seems the ones that make the loudest noise in preferences are not majority. Smooth jazz is lacking in Atlanta, too. One station in Roswell.... I love it when I'm close enough to their signal. I took a small north GA town job to escape ratrace Atlanta.

i was just recently introduced to pandora by a friend we were sitting at his house listening to same 4 songs on evry station saying how much better it would be if someone would play new and old music without playing them out and making you hate a good song alsio if you want to really experience southern music you have to go further south to the birth place of CAMOFLAUGE SAVANNAH GA experience the river street night life and you'll understand the southern genre also a tip you should have a launching stationn for new artist to submit their music i know plenty of new rappers better than whos out now but no platform to perform. anyway keep up the good work
