Your Favorites......and your research guide
As we've discussed, when you thumbs up a song, that act changes the station you're listening to. Your Favorites, however, is a place to "bookmark" songs so that you can keep track of them for later. This will not change your stations one bit; it only keeps a list of songs so you don't have to write down song or artist names on (gasp) paper. These two features are complementary, but distinct.
Favoriting a song (do this by clicking on the album art) will not alter your station, and thumbs upping a song will alter your station, but it will not keep a handy, printable list for you. Sometimes, you may want to thumbs up and favorite a song. That way you can mold your station while keeping track of the song for later reference. Whee, we're geekin' now!
"Favorites" is kind of a misnomer for me. These songs aren't necessarily my favorites; I use it as more of a To-Research List. I add songs to my Favorites list when I like the song, sure. I've got five pages of Oh Wow, This Is A Great Song. But I also add songs to my Favorites page because I'm busy when the song comes on, and I really just want to research it later.
The unassuming Favorites list has all kinds of handy-dandy features.
* Click on the artist name to find out more about them at the info-licious allmusic.com.
* Listen to clips of the songs.
* Arrange the list by date, song title, artist name, or by the station on which you heard the song.
* Click on the song name to see the cover and name of the album it came from.
* Click through to buy the tunes or albums from iTunes or Amazon.
* Print the whole beast out and bring it to your neighborhood record store so that you don't draw a blank about what to get when you're there.
* Here's an idea that one listener clued me in to: print out your list and hand it to your loved one who doesn't know what to get you for your birthday! Or (if the artist isn't too obscure to be found on Amazon), click through our page to Amazon and add it to your Amazon wish list!
Another thing I do is plan CD playlist mixes via my Pandora Favorites list. Whenever I hear a song that fits whatever theme I'm working for the next mix, I keep track of it in my Favorites. Then I buy the tunes and organize them in iTunes (or similar software), creating, I must say, a work of Art.
You can add a song to your Favorites list even after the song is done playing...
This is handy for times when you step away from the computer for a bit and miss some songs...but now you want to know what those missed songs sounded like! As you know, you can't rewind to re-play the song. Our music licenses don't allow for that. But you CAN add the missed songs to your favorites list and listen to clips of them at your leisure. You can even still go back and give feedback on the song even though it's no longer playing. (and feel free to delete the songs from your fave list by clicking on the little arrow to the left of the song name)
Any time you add a song to your Favorites, the list should pop up for you. Or, any time you just want to take a peek at what's listed there, click on the little 'Your Favorites' box right above your tuner.

Hi Lucia,
I have a question for you. Is there any way in the world that I can pause or stop a station? Sometimes a phone call or a doorbell ring comes at a time that is inappropiate for me.
I had asked this question of Vic Wong but he has not responded. Is he still with the company? Please let me know if that is the case.
Regards,
Ira

Yes!
The Pause button is the middle button at the top right-hand corner of the tuner. Between Play and Skip.
Enjoy!

It would be nice to have a feature to search for and add a song to your favorites from the favorites page instead of only from a Pandora station. That way, you could still keep track of songs you happened to hear somewhere else or heard on Pandora but for some reason didn't add at the time.
I envision some sort of song search engine that shows multiple results in the same format as your favorites page (ie with a link to an audio clip, etc to help you identify the song you want).

Hi Lucia!
Another great feature, in my opinion, is that you can create new stations from your or other people's favorites. You click on one of the songs and on the following page you click "Create a station: song x".
It would be quite handy, if this link was placed directly on the list for each song.
Cheers,
Jan

This is probably silly, but... is there any way to "drag around" or otherwise rearrange your stations, and if not, could there be? I'm anal-retentive like that.
It would also be nice if there were a way to "clear the cache" without reloading the page entirely- this computer apparently screams like a stuck pig about low disk space after a couple of hours' worth of music- but that's not terribly important, I'm sure.

Thanks, Lucia!
That really clears up a couple of things I had been wondering about for a while now.

Hi Lucia!
I already have over 100 songs on my favorites list. Is there a limit to the number of songs I can have... or can I keep adding forever?
Thanks,
Jon B

I agree with Greenling, I'd like to rearrange my stations, too.
And the option to rearrange the favourites would be a great feature as well, especially as they appear on my personal blog, and I can't do nothing to push my favorite favorite to the top.

a small request for this Favorites feature, have it NOT open up a pop up when I add a favorite ;)
Make the adding of a favorite song, just as transparant as the 'thumbing up' of a track ;)
I like the favorites, but the pop up is kind of annoying, in a multi-tasking world with many windows already open :P

Just found Pandora today, and some interesting results. First, it as much as software hates it when we do this, it is difficult not to anthropomorphisize Pandora. After throwing an admitedly diverse group of artists and songs her way, Pandora, that wench, would go down some tangential path that had minor relation to my choices, it seemed, challenging me to say 'cease and desist' as each successive song was more entrenched in a genre (60's pop in one case) that she chose. When I finally told her enough, she would do the same with another genre (female jazz singers)until I once again put her in her place.
For all her vacilation and fickleness, she is definitely seductive, and I fear I may find myself visiting her at all hours of the night, just to see what surprises she has in store!
On another note, there is strangeness in the selection process. I wanted to add Keith Jarret's the Koln Concert to my station, and it was not found, only to show up on its own later. Also, I wanted to add an East Indian influence and found that Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Kahn were not known. Neither was British Artist Mariam Stockley, making me wonder if we have an American chauvenist on our hands.

Hi Lucia,
The Favorites option is a fantastic addition to an already amazing web site. Pandora is brilliant. I can't describe my admiration for the Music Genome Project or how well you all have executed the web site.
The best I can do is compare it to a time I was living in Dallas during the early 90s. There was a vital local music scene and the public radio station, KERA, had a brilliant DJ named Chris Dorita. He did awesome eclectic programming. Pandora is like having Chris Dorita as my personal music consultant.

It would be great if we could leverage the favorites page to create stations. For example, from the favorites page it would be great to be able to create a mix station based on
* all the songs
* all the artists
This ties in with your last post about managing your station by adding music. For now, "all" of the songs/artists is probably good enough but an obvious enhancement would be to select specific ones.
Thanks for listening!

A couple of odd suggestions (from an odd person):
1. Would it be possible for you to arrange the lists of the songs we thumbed (up or down) either by artist or song title? I ask for an odd reason: I like playing with my station (yeah, I only have one, but it is eclectic/eccentric enough to keep me happy), by adding and subtracting artists to see what happens. I'd like to do the same with the songs I marked Like and Don't like, but scrolling through the lists is a chore because it is now (I think) chronological. In addition, before the auto-display of up thumbs I clicked the same songs repeatedly because I could not remember if I had done it already (thanks for that feature by the way).
I'm not asking for a sortable list because I suspect that would be a bandwidth drain. Just something more organized for those of us with bad memories and poor eyesight.
2. How about a bit more with the "Go to sleep" function?
a. A tab with a list of the sleeping songs. I don't even want a "remove" option, I would just like to know what is on hold for 30 days...just because.
b. Even when I am a bit tired of them, I like to listen to songs one last time before I put them to bed for 30 days. Currently we have to stop a song while it is playing. However, we can Up or Down a song after it has finished playing. Can you make Sleep available after the song has finished?
As with all of my requests I understand that there are probably huge programing problems that I could never grasp in a zillion years, but I thought I would ask.
Cheers,
jay
Thing I like about Pandora #1588: After listening to Pinball Wizard for the past 20+ years I FINALLY understand all of the lyrics!

I like the idea of making a station from favorites too. Maybe just have a station called favorites that always reflects the current favorites list.
Posted by: Jim McKeeth at May 22, 2006 10:57 AM
It took me a second to figure out what Jay meant my a "sleep" option. If I understand correctly, that would be great! I am always listening to a song and then get an idea for a new station, but I don't want to interrupt the current song. So if I could tell it to "pause after this song" or "sleep after this song" that would be WAY COOL.
Thanks again!

Hey guys !! I love the Pandora concept, so does my 14-year-old daughter, she is hooked totally and is telling all her friends. She would probably have never listened to songs from the 50s and 60s if not from the ease of the computer. How would I know she would fall in love with Johnny Maestro and the Crests ... LOL ... and she goes around singing "Mister Happiness." It's hilarious !!! I could see this kid doing a commericial promoting Pandora to her age group ... She is really enjoying it. I practically have to pry her off my computer !! Yes, she's normal, lol !! Just loves to explore different types of music. She's already starting her favorites with you guys... I enjoy it as well, and would love to promote it on my blogsites. Would that be allright ? and if so how would I do that exactly ? Well, thanks for Pandora !!
Kentucky's rocking with Pandora !!

i have a small favor to ask, please...
is there any way that i may eliminate an artist entirely from a station?
it seems that no matter what female artist i enter into pandora, i inevitably end up encountering celine dion. i find this terribly disturbing.
i realize lots of people like celine, and i respect that. i just don't really care for her music, nor do i find that any of the other characteristics of the songs are what i'm interested in hearing. she's a little to "poppy" for my tastes and i'm not sure why she keeps haunting me.
can you please save me?
thank you.

love love love the site.
i would love to discover the music of other countries, i know that pandora is not intended to go with music genre but would be great to be able to sample music from a particular country, say france or jamaica. especially nice before or after vacation.

I really enjoying Pandora, aftering having th major of the people I know praise it, the only problem I have with it is not beening able to see what Album the song is from - unless I know the cover, which always nice to see.

I'm not criticizing, because I consider this station the most wonderful crossing between my pc and my favorite music! But are there future plans to expand the options from "I Like It" and "I Don't Like It" to do things such as exclude live tracks, even by artists one loves? The matrix doesn't seem to learn this from rejecting every live track that comes up,and I can see that this may be complicated.
Just something to consider.

Hey this may be the completely wrong place to put this. But I have like 5 or 6 artists that I'd like you to add but don't even register when I enter them in my stations. Here they are:
Reuben's Accomplice (Tempe, AZ)
The Necronauts (Tempe?, Az)
Ember Coast (Tempe, AZ)
Ten Dollar Outfit (Phoenix, AZ)
De Capulet (Scottsdale, AZ)
Skybox (Phoenix, Az/ Chicago, IL)
Thanks a lot, I can send these bands' songs to you or whatever you do

- Pandora is the best thing since beer
- Thanks for mentioning "The Dead Texan". That is great music...I'm going to have to buy the cd.

Hi Pandora... You've really got me hooked... But tell me do you have any classical music stations that I can tune in to... ?
Posted by: K.L.A.S at May 28, 2006 08:03 AM
Hi Lucia!
Congratulations for your service. It's great! Since I discovered Pandora it's the ONE and ONLY source of music I hear on the internet. Nothing compares with it. I discovered new groups and songs that I liked and just never heard about. Great!
I agree with jay about the possibility of sorting the 'Songs You Liked' and 'Songs You Didn't Like' (maybe also the 'Items You Added' list).
Going a step further, I think it would be very more user-friendly if you could list and sort these lists in the same way as the 'Favorites List'. Also very good to keep track of the songs you already heard and liked ;)
Posted by: 24may66 at May 29, 2006 04:48 AM
Sweet!
Gotta start with I love this project. This is by far the greatest music source on the internet. I use it every day at work.
I have quick question about favorites. Would it be possible to create a favorites page for each station? Right now I have 3 stations with different genres. Mixing them all together does not make a good list :(
It would be great if I could maintain a favorites page for each station :)
Posted by: sm at May 31, 2006 04:06 AM
I agree with a lot of the above, and my biggest frustration with Pandora is that i want to thumb up a song because i enjoy it and want to hear it more often, but not that i want to change the whole sound of the station to this...
i get locked into indecision with some songs, as i like some aspects particularly but dont like other aspects. this is particularly true for crossover artists, for example i want to thumb up bob dylan for "great lyrics" etc but i dont want to make my station into one big folk festival...would it possible to specify the aspects of a song which you are thumbing up? or even to create stations based on features of music, as opposed to on songs/artists?
also, would it be possible to see the album title, as well as the cover? this has lead to hours of trawling the internet with search titles resembling "that blue and yellow album"... Pandora is jeopardising my education!

Hello,
Before I read any of these blog entries, I used to give thumbs up in order to remember an artist/song I liked. Is there any way to add these songs to my favorites list, so that I can remove them from my stations?
Love the project, btw.

Hi. I just wanted to say that I really love this site. I'm listening to Josh Groban as I type. It's awesome. I love how I can request one song and the station knows what kind of music I like to listen to. It's so convenient and free. It's so hard when every other station wants money just to listen to some music. I'm dealing with difficult times and money is really tight right now. I'm so glad when I can just get on my computer and go to pandora.com. It's so relaxing. I love this station and I plan on listening for a long time. Thank you so much for sharing this music with the public!

OK...There is a lot of 'stuff' on the web. But this is one of the finest things I have ever come across. It was love at first 'site' - I have been a listener for about 2 months and have customized a few stations. My suggestion would be if you all could try to add some calypso, junkanoo (Bahamas) and soca (Trinidad & Tobabgo) music - music from the Caribbean islands. There are some really great, very crative artists out there that don't get the mainstream attention. Some examples are Eugene Davis (aka Gino D),The Spank Band, K.B., Smokey 007, Visage, Funky D, Ronnie Butler, Spice, Eddie Minnis, T'rez Hepburn,Sweet Emily, Michael Montana, Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires ...The list goes on.
Thanks for taking the time to check these out. You'll find something you like!!

Is there a way to add "Thumbed Up" songs to a station without having to have the song play first? I want to add more songs but don't want to add them as actual seeds.
