Hi, I'm Lucia. I'm your Listener Advocate here at your musical playground, Pandora. I've had the pleasure of "meeting" thousands of you already, via email. Pandora employs me to make sure that your Pandora-related needs and wants are being paid attention to. Back when Pandora was being tested on a few listeners, I was a die-hard Panfanatic and couldn't stop talking about Pandora to anyone who would listen. Now that I work here, it's considered a good thing that I obsess about Pandora all the livelong day.

If you were to walk around our office on any given day, you would hear numerous exciting (and excitable) discussions about how to make Pandora better. This team is at work night and day coming up with new ideas and new-and-improved plans. The Pandora brainiacs work passionately at bringing you the best music, the best service, the best of the web.

One of my favorite parts of the job is hearing your anecdotes about Pandora. Many of you are kept saner at work because of Pandora. You tell us that your city only offers up tired radio stations, and that Pandora has saved you from musical boredom. Others of you have abandoned your radios and even your ipods because of us. And many DJs have written to us to thank us for providing them with a perfect way to find new tunes. Pandora has become your musical companion, and that makes me happy! All we want is for you to find music that moves you, and for more moving music of all kinds to be heard.

Speaking for myself and my group of friends, we have discovered so much amazing music on Pandora, music that we had never heard of, that we're spending more and more of our free time and free cash attending live music shows; the shows of the artists we discovered on Pandora!

Sunday night, in fact, some friends and I went to hear KT Tunstall at The Fillmore. It was a superb show, and as the three of us chatted, we realized that none of us would have heard of her if not for Pandora. In fact, the reason KT's music was added to Pandora this winter was because you wrote to us and suggested that we add her music to our collection. So thanks to you, our unofficial music scouts. We're all reaping the benefits of your careful listening.

cheers, Lucia

written while listening to:
Benny Goodman Radio

An elderly gentleman wrote to me last week to tell me how much he and his wife are enjoying Pandora. He said that this Benny Goodman station was taking them back in time to his high school days, almost 70 years ago. Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Red Norvo, Eddie Daniels, Count Basie, etc. I added Benny Goodman Radio to my list of stations, and I've got to say, it's putting a big fat smile on my face.

Because it's not just about discovering brand new music, but also about (re)discovering the stuff you've missed or forgotten about.

Hey guys,

I think what you're doing will be great for the music industry. Sinse discovering a few songs I liked from artists I didnt know about. I went and bought 5 cd's. I bought some Insane Clown Possy and some The Streets cd's and I like them.

Posted by: murray at May 9, 2006 03:29 PM

Thanks for the great music. I love picking what I want as I get a large varity of music that I can't get any where else. I go from heavy metal to ABBA. Pretty funny! Except someone tried sneaking in a few country and western. YUCK! Thank goodness for the "I don't like this song" button!

Lucia,

thanks for listening to us =:-)

i've been working on a list of music i'd love to hear added to Pandora. it will be sent this week.

My station has several different genres - cool jazz, electronic, new age, some others. The station seems to get 'stuck' on one genre unless I say I don't like a song. I may not actually dislike the song but I get tired of hearing similar music after a while. I'd like to hear more of a mix if possible.

I'm also finding many old favorites from the 1960's/1970's aren't available. Is this because they weren't released on DVD, only vinyl? Peter Maunu was released on DVD but isn't available on your service - yet? :-)

Thanks and I love the service.

Cheers,

Hey!

Loving Pandora so far. Just wondering about the way bands and songs that are not recognized are reported to the staff. I've been trying to make some D-beat (hardcore punk) and Tekno (underground acid/gabber from NL and France) stations, and Pandora keeps telling me: "I didn't find anything, but we'll look in to it." How does this work?

Thanks!

Posted by: Tyfus at May 9, 2006 05:52 PM

I listen to a lot of jazz and just love Pandora. I find that it provides a good mix of music almost all the time. Occasionally it will drift from, say, Bill Evans to stride piano ... but by the time it does that I am usually wanting to listen to something else anyway!

Keep up the great work.

Posted by: richard at May 9, 2006 05:56 PM

Hello, I love Pandora, but I would also like to hear the band Iris! :)

Posted by: dg at May 9, 2006 06:47 PM

I showed it to my dad last week. I asked him what he wanted to hear and he said "Glen Miller" and then we got Dorsey, Goodman, etc.

He was impressed. :-)

I'm enjoying Pandora a lot, and would like to make one minor suggestion: A merge-stations button would be great feature, allowing users to mix-up the music they listen to. I know I sure could use it!

Thanks,

Your site restores confidence that good music will prevail! Keep up the good work.

Two suggestions
1- a way to merge stations temporarily, as noted above, would be fantastic
2 - create some way to exclude maintream songs

Thanks!

Pandora is really great! How about Classical music. Beethoven and others have awesome compositions out there.

Posted by: John Patrick at May 9, 2006 07:47 PM

You know, I would just love to be able to restrict my stations by genre or even by time period. My station "The Twangerie" is great except for the occasional modern day pop country that comes across or the odd Jewel song and what not. Being able to tell Pandora to only play "country western from the fifties" would be AWESOME! Is it possible?

Posted by: TheFryCook at May 9, 2006 08:47 PM

oooh, another idea:
Create a way for Pandora to genome-map my own music managed by itunes and then create really smart playlists based on a few songs that I select

That would be COOL!

Posted by: Jared at May 9, 2006 09:47 PM

"How about Classical music."

I imagine that classical music would be some type of "hell" to have to review and categorize into 400 or so "descriptors/genes".

Beethoven, for instance, is 100 times as complicated as Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry, or Dazed and Confused by Led Zeppelin.

I think people can find good classical music today easier than they can find good contemporary music.
Most of it's been written already, after all.

Posted by: Beau at May 10, 2006 12:29 AM

I discovered Pandora two days ago, and I love it! My fav-list ist already two pages long. I really have to consider now what to put in...

Perhaps one suggestion: would be nice if you could influence the direction the station will drift. Eg "sounds very nice, but a bit more funky". But easier said than done, I know!

What an amazing site. I have been listening to the internet radio for a long while but Pandora has it beat hands down. I love the way it pulls songs with the same type of sound. My only complaint is that I can't listen to it on my PDA cell phone(no flash player) like I can the internet radio. Keep up the good work. It's greatly appreciated.

There is nothing better than recognizing feedback from the people who use and talk about Pandora the most. That is one of the reasons you guys have done so well - and long may it continue!

Posted by: SimonH at May 10, 2006 08:37 AM

Thank you Lucia for your time and energy put into Pandora for our enjoyment! ... and for the Benny Goodman Radio tip ;)

I own a small business and can now play TONS of great music without annoying commercials and DJ's (and having to switch cd's out).
I have just about every genre of music that I like covered and only occasionally have to thumbs down certain tracks.

After 6 months of avidly listening to Pandora's great selection of music, I'm still very impressed!!

Posted by: Machiventa at May 10, 2006 09:05 AM

I gave up on radio years ago. Itunes/Ipod is great but takes hours to customise. Been listening to Pandora for the first time today and must say I am totally digging it! Thanks for developing such a neat app. Have recommened to all my mates, music consumers and producers alike. No negative feedback, though the interface/website looks a little tired. CHEERS!

Posted by: Anthony at May 10, 2006 09:07 AM

Hey, Lucia.

Just yesterday I heard a song by Black Tie Dynasty and loved it. I went to their website and found out they're from within my metroplex and I had never heard of them! They're playing in the town where I live this Thursday. So a big thanks to Pandora for planning my Thursday night! :)

Feature Suggestion:

There are times I want to give a song a thumbs down, but there's really only 1 specific thing I dislike about the song ... most of the song's characteristics are great. It would really help to further "hone" the personalization of stations if you allowed the user to select from a preset list of reasons for giving a song a thumbs down. This could be an optional step, and by using a preset list, you could easily programmatically adjust the selection behavior of the station based on the feedback given.

Heck, if you wanted to get this granular, you could make the feedback selection list simply a list of the criteria you judge a song by. Add the song's value for that criterion to the filter set for the station and voila, you're done. (Of course you'd want to organize the display by category for ease of use.)

Anyway, keep up the good work. Pandora rocks!

What a wonderful thing this is. I have had so much fun today and can see it being a wonderful selection tool. Are you thinking about doing anything with classical music. That would be too cool for words.

I just stumbled across Pandora by chance when looking up the story of Pandora's box! What are the chances?

Amazing idea, endless hours of entertainment! Thank you very much! :-)

I love what I've heard so far. Duplicating a question I posed to support: I think it would be great if I could cycle through all the "stations" I've created, either in order or at random.
Pandora is the next step up from CD's and a CD player. Your artificial intellegence programming lets me have it my way, free of music I don't care for, mindless d.j. chatter, etc. It also leaves me free from mega corporations who buy my favorite station, and then completely change the programming to whatever they think will sell, sometimes going to a genre I hate so bad I abandon the station.
Thank y', thank y' v'ry much.

Great site..best on the web...hands down.

As for everyone making demands to make this change or that change, hey, it's a free site. Every change that gets done costs money. How many of you are paid up subscribers?? This site will likely go Pay-per-use eventually so enjoy it while it's still free FFS.

Congrats on the site, exactly what many of us have been looking for for A LONG time. Cheers!

I think it might be fun to include "side B's" of various artists. I mean, the songs that didn't make it on the radio, but still were all right. Perhaps a "side B" selection option would be nice.

Posted by: bruce forster at May 10, 2006 09:42 PM

This is the greatest music staion ever! It might take a while to find the exact genre with all the perfect songs to fit your needs but with patience it suddenly happens!! For smooth jazz lovers, try Hubert Laws for great intrumentals and hardly anything you will give a thumbs down. Still trying to find Patriotic music station though, that sticks to that genre only. Keep up the good work!

Posted by: Mary Johnson at May 11, 2006 05:10 AM

Hey,

I was wondering if there could be some kind of list of music genes that you guys use, and some way for us to select which genes we like for a particular station.

Posted by: victor kennedy at May 11, 2006 07:28 AM

I agree with Yassmin. What happens is we like to narrow down a certain type of music so it fits into a small genre. Listening to this one genre for hours gets boring after a while even though we like the music. It would be good to create groups of stations that are switched at random, or in order (our preference) to give some variety. This would be like at a good concert where a band will mix up playing fast and slow songs because you can't stay in a frenzy for too long, you need to relax from it from time to time. You can't combine the slow and fast songs in one station because that will get everything in between. This would allow us to not have to manually switch stations, and just listen to the great music. As each new song played, the station highlight would track it.

Bottom line, allow us to create groups of stations from which you will randomly switch.

The future looks bright for you guys, thanks for the site.

Hi,

If there's a better place to suggest bands to add I'd like to know, but otherwise: what about adding Dead Poetic and Zeromancer to the collection? I'd be interested to see how they'd be classified...

Other than that, Pandora is a great service! I look forward to the moments I can sit enjoying your music selections.

Sometimes, I want more of stuff like a song I heard, but it's just something about the song, not everything about the song that I like. Or I want to hear more songs like it, but that particular song doesn't light me up.

How about two levels of I Like It? I like it and I Like It a Lot!

******** * *********
Would it make sense to have a quality button?

Do reviewers agree on quality? I mean, some songs in a genre seem the same based on several dimensions, but one just hits the spot like none of the others. It's like a couple of Alicia Keys' songs are quite like other singers', but theirs don't hold a candle to hers. Same with Ozzy - few songs can touch Crazy Train. Even Mozart wrote some pieces that are clearly recognizable as his, but I'll pass on them because they aren't Divertimento in D or Piano Concerto #23. Consider adding a quality button - or, better, having your official reviewers give songs quality ratings.

If you are relatively new to Pandora, as I am, about one month in, don't forget to check out the Slim Devices Squeezebox. I picked on up shortly after starting my Pandora subscription. I can now listen to my Pandora on any receiver within "wireless" distance of my computer. This is fantastic...taking it Pandora to the living room, out to the garage, in the back yard. Totally satisfied with Pandor and slimdevices.com.

Posted by: Brent at May 11, 2006 02:04 PM

Hey. I think it would be cool if you had a feature where you could make stations but instead of picking songs, you could pick certain qualities, such as blues influences, guitar solo, mixed electric and acoustic instrumentation, whatever. Just a thought.

Posted by: bluesman at May 11, 2006 02:50 PM

I've bought more CDs from listening to this service than I ever did in iTunes, Winamp Radio, or Napster (2.0) combined. It's really a shame it can't be offered via satellite, but who knows? Perhaps a day will come where we can stream the internet from any moving vehicle we want. Until then, it's nice to have a high-quality radio station that breaks the monotony of cheap paint, ugly office furniture, and flourescent lighting.

Re all the indie garage stuff that gets submitted... Makes me think there ought to be an "indie-only pandora", consisting only of these manually submitted artists. The genome matches could still be based on the same corpus as "real" Pandora, but *only* play submitted music. So when searching for "Britney Spears", instead of just getting Christina and Pink and etc., you'd get none of that and get music that was truly new to you.

Crazy idea, I know. I'm full of them.

THANK YOU to him and to you guys!!!!!!!!

Just started using Pandora. It took me a little while to figure the types of algorythms Pandora must be using. It doesn't seem to have much long term memory. Typing in a significantly different request radically changes the nature of the station.

Initially, I kept requesting performers and intentionally rewarding alternative choices that moved in a slightly different direction. This would produce a an entirely different station. EG: I requested an obscure folk singer, enjoyed several supplementary folk tunes, gave a plus to a gospel song and quickly was listening to a Christian music station! I kept waiting for it to go back to all or even any of my previous requests.

Instead of being some kind of digital dj with an ability to mathematically weight all my choices it's much more like focused surfing. Consequently it seems best for users to keep their requests and rewarded selections to a moderate level if they want a coherent station.

That being the case I would certainly agree with other posters that being able to automatically mix radio stations would be a welcome option.

As for category options I imagine that this might not be easy to do with your program. Perhaps you could provide a web page with several available performers names listed under each category. Using a conventional search engine to come with pandora available performers in categories like ukulele, banjo, zydeco or traditional Quebec music is very difficult and time consuming. Especially, if after much trial and error it becomes apparent that Pandora doesn't include _any_ performers from that category. Need I mention classical.

I want to make it clear that I'm impressed by Pandora. It's much better than almost any of the internet radio stations that I use and is always available and without annoying buffering problems and lost connections.

Posted by: northernguy at May 11, 2006 09:11 PM

About the feedback you can give to Pandora: I agree that it would be nice to tell Pandora in more detail what you like and what not. But don't make it too complicated and in depth. On one hand you would exactly get what you wanted. On the other, you would filter out all the random findings you didn't thought about they ever existed!

Eg I'm listening now to electronica music with "indian influences". There is some groovy stuff I never thought of - it's by pure chance because Pandora thought it's cool.

A few days ago I launched a Pandora station by searching for one of your employees, Michael Zapruder, someone I recently met & saw peform live. I heard music from some of my friends and even some of my clients: Ryan Auffenberg, Matt Nathanson, Josh Rouse, etc. When my coworkers came into my office to cool off from the heat, they all fell silent and soon were bobbing their heads to Josh and Michael and the others. 5 songs later, one coworker asked what cool CD compliation I was playing. I introduced them to my Pandora station and now they all want to create their stations here on my Mac and bring their lunches to my office to listen and relax. These are 5 coworkers who otherwise wouldn't have come up to visit me! Had it not been for my air conditioner and the Pandora station I created earlier, these coworkers would have continued to be strangers. Now I have music buddies and you have 5 new users! Thank you ;)

Hey! This service is sooo cool; I just love it! A friend told me about it, and now I'm spreading the word. The only thing I'm wanting to see, other than the awesome suggestion of random shuffling, is categorization by genre content. In other words, I'd like a purely "Christian" station, but I get a mixture of DC Talk and A Tribe Called Quest. Now, although I dig both, I would love to have a station of only Christian-themed songs. Thanks so much for listening to us...it helps us keep listening to you!

In addition to the current choices, how about some way to choose a specific decade or year? There are often trends in popular music that can be captured by a date range.
Thanks for listening

Posted by: Masood at May 14, 2006 07:25 AM

How about Pandora partnering with a lyrics database? That way one could automatically scroll the lyrics to the song that is currently playing.

Don't know about others, but I would Love something like that.

Scepter.

Posted by: Scepter at May 14, 2006 09:14 AM

I've been enjoying this, but the search interface drives me nuts. If there's no match, it gives the announcement about always looking for cool ideas (yeah, sure, whatever), but if there is a close match, it gives you a listing of the matches. There is no way to give the feedback that the search failed, other than to not select anything. Does that get recorded?

Movielens has a suggestion interface -- if a movie is considered and either accepted or rejected, you can get an e-mail about letting you know. That would be kind of cool, so I don't have to keep remembering to search for the band in question every so often.

I just discovered Pandora yesterday. This... is BRILLIANT. I've never even heard of anything like Pandora before! I'm showing it off to all my broadband-equipped friends, and they love it as much as I do. And the interface! It's got this attitude, like the entire program is saying, "Yeah, I'm bad, and I know it." Whatever happens, keep the writing tone for the interface. It's outstanding: a description that matches Pandora perfectly. Keep up the great work!

Hello! I wanted to make a suggestion about adding an artist. The artist is "Forget Cassettes" and the album I own is "Instruments of Action". This is an amazing band and very under-rated. Their website is http://www.forgetcassettes.com. I heard them on an underground music show and immediately called the station to find out who they were. I was directed to their website and ordered a copy of their CD. Just wanted to see if you could add them. I guess the genre would be in the same category as possibly Portishead with a bit more alt/rock or punk, you have to hear it for yourself to decide. Thanks a bunch, Amber

Lucia, how about a link to buy music from somewhere other than iTunes? I have an MP3 player that doesn't come from Apple and won't play iTunes-bought music. How fair is it that my 12 year old gets to buy music right away but I have to go somewhere else? What about those of us who aren't the cool kids with the coolest toys (although i love my Zen)?

Posted by: Wayne Turmel at May 15, 2006 12:52 PM

The idea of Pandora seems profound. A couple of quirks make it a little harder to decide how well the idea has been developed.

Example: The first thing I decided to do was see what a Tom Waits station might look like. A good test case, because his music is so eclectic and has changed so much over the years. There were some wrong notes: "acoustic piano" and "major key" were deemed central to the Tom Waits genome. Missing were what I think the essentials are: eclecticism, humor, weird instrumentation, experiments with sonic texture, throwbacks to old Americana, and a kind of handmade quality. In fact, the most notable thing about the evolution of Tom Waits's music is that, since "swordfishtrombones," he's been more and more interested in a rough-around-the-edges, handmade kind of music, and less and less interested in the kind of studio production featured on, say, "Blue Valentine" and other recordings of the late '70s and early '80s. When the Billy Joel song "Always A Woman" came up in the queue, it seemed clear that Pandora's genomic criteria had failed to include something central about who Tom Waits is as a songwriter and performer.

Quirk #2: It would be nice to see an entire list of all the songs waiting in the queue and be able to comment on them, without having to listen to them all (I quickly hit my skip-limit and had to listen to each song in its entirety until I could skip again). I understand that a licensing agreement requires a limit on skipping, but does it preclude providing a simple list that you can help tweak? Maybe there is such a feature and I just missed it.

Hello and thanks!

I learned about pandora on PC magazine and loved it so much I immediately called my brother (international long distance!)and friends about it! You'll be happy to know I'm promoting it hard : ) I just think it's fabulous, a great idea and a fantastic way to get to know new music... awesome job!
I would love to hear more music in Spanish, since there's a whooooole lot more than reggeaton and "grupera" music (unfortunately, the most known in USA and the worst expressions of music in Spanish!). Let me know when (if) you will be adding music in spanish to Pandora!

Thanks again and congrats for such a wonderful project.

iTunes integration, ala last.fm

hi i just thought that the choices are to spacific, i think that a choice of a list of genres that can be broad like; jazz, dance.... if you get what i mean.
i found my self entering an old song 'don't worry,be happy' and proceded to get realy odl songs following it instead of jazz or regge.

Posted by: tony ombler at May 16, 2006 04:57 AM

I've tried to create a station for just Rock instrumentals, like Tommy's Underture and Sparks by the Who. However, all of the songs have had lyrics. I've rejected them all, but only lyrics keep coming.
Otherwise, thanks for the music.

I discovered Pandora 3 weeks ago and I love it. I've turned a few of my co-workers on to it as well as my girlfriend. It's such a great way to listen to your favorite music AND discover new music.

One suggestion. You should allow users to assign favorite songs to different radio stations e.g. I'm listening to 'Bob Marley' radio and a east coast rap song by Talib Kweli comes on....I loved Talib in Blackstar with Mos Def (and have a few of their recent albums); however, I'd like to assign that to favorites list for my "Mostly East Coast" radio station.

Keep up the great work!

Peace,

Zak

Radio? That old thing?
I sometimes feel a bit guitly about my Pandora fixation. Over the past two years my fiancee has purchased a turn-table (yes I still own records!), receiver and speakers as gifts for Christmas/birthday.

Since I discovered Pandora, about $1000 in audio components have been gathering dust. I can't be bothered with radio in Washington, DC, and if DC does not have a diverse array of stations to reflect the diverse array of people, I can't imagine what things are like in Poughkeepsie, NY!

Not to sound completely mad but I NEED music. Without music I become a tad cranky (think heroin addict who has missed a fix). I was not getting that from programmed radio (think heroin addict trying to make do with Rolaids) and have not been since the late 90's. In addition, there are only so many times I can listen to my music collection before even THAT begins to pall. Pandora came along just in time. I was thinking of buying an XM or Sirius system but I also do not like the idea of stations that play only ONE type of music (yawn). There used to be a station in DC that would play ANYTHING if they had it in their collection (Punk, Rock, Metal, Jazz, a little classical thrown in here and there). It was sold and became a College Music format station in...the late 90's I think. I was in mourning (laugh if you must) UNTIL early February of '06 when someone told me about Pandora. I'm still working on it but I'm trying to recreate THAT station on-line. I've actually had to perform very little tweaking, which is why I continue to think the program peeks into my memory and pulls out things I'd forgotten I'd ever heard (joke).

Finally, it is funny you mention people giving up their iPods - I would never have considered purchasing an MP3 player of any sort (I still don't own a CD player) until I found out about Pandora. I'm pretty sure I will buy one in the near future and start requesting iTunes cards from everyone I know, because my Favorites list has over 300 songs in it. But for now I enjoy the feeling I used to get when I listened to radio a very long time ago: Waiting to see what Pandora will play next and wondering if it will play another song I had not heard in so long I had forgotten it existed.

I'm afraid an iPod will cut into my Pandora listening time!

p.s. Do you all have any need for L.A.s at large? I'm your girl if you need someone to cover the DC/Metro area.

If I could change one thing about Pandora...
It would be to add one more choice to the artist menu. I'd like a link to the artist's page on allmusic.com. I always end up going there for bio information, and a quick link would make it so much easier.
Please? and Thank you.

Hey Lucia,

Just got turned on to Pandora and I love it.

Also wanted to tell you I really like your name. In fact, my 7 month daughter is called Lucia. Though I will admit it was her mother's idea. ;)

Posted by: Andreas at May 17, 2006 10:08 AM

Graig:

To get more artist information:

In the tuner, click on the song title, which brings you to a song profile page.

From there, you can click on the artist's name to go directly to their entry on the All Music Guide.

We definitely plan to add more artist information to the Pandora tuner in future versions.

cheers, Lucia

I love the service all around. My pick for change is having a vertical layout for the player instead of the horizontal design. I did a few mock-ups on my site.
http://3e-lab.com/blog/05/10/biz/pandora-mini-player-revised-layout-idea/
A vertical player would be a great match for folks using the new MacBook with the widescreen display.

What an amazing site and idea. I have turned on a lot of friends to this. Thank you so much for listening and supporting our stations and artists.

When will we be able to add you myspace as our player? Or promote you on myspace?

Posted by: Steve B at May 18, 2006 11:36 AM

Hi Lucia,

a nice enhancement to your Pandora player would be to allow for opening the iTunes/Amazon link in another browser window or tab. I'd like to keep listening to a song while searching more information about the album, which I cannot presently do with your Flash player.

Thanks,

Lomig from France

Posted by: Lomig at May 19, 2006 08:12 AM

I'm not a fan of advertisements but I'm a fan of Pandora, so I just thought I'd suggest that if you were able to customize ads based on users' musical interest, you'd have a much higher clickthrough rate. For example, with the iTunes ads you showed me, there wasn't a chance I was ever going to buy the advertised music, since it's nowhere close to my musical interest, thus the ad was mostly ineffective.

Posted by: Keith at May 20, 2006 09:11 AM

Lucia, thanks for giving the opportunity for us to speak up. I have two major requests...
First can we add a way to delete a single song from our playlists? There have been quite a few already where I like the artist, and it fits with what I like, but for one reason or another, I just don't like that one song. I don't want it to influence everything else though...

Also, can we get Nelly furtado's two new singles out? she has a new song called Promiscuous and another called no hay igual. Also, her new album will be released next month...

Hi Fellows, I love the concept, but i have just one problem, do you know what Classical music is? as in Opera, as in Ballet, as in Beethoven,Chopin Debussy or Pjotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to name just a few,Now i do like the Blues, Acid country, Jazz etc but it seems that the relaxing music that i need every so often is not available. I hope to see it soon, and i write this some classical music comes on not sure what itis maybe you are listening to me!
Any way agreat station and concept. Bruce

Pandora is an awesome tool. At home and at work.
SUGGESTION to the Pandoras: How about adding "album" and "year" information to the song info?
STEP-ON from L.A.

Posted by: Step-On at May 21, 2006 02:46 AM

Lucia,

Pandora is a great service and I have a couple of suggestions that could make it better:

1) I did a search on an artist named Craig Taubman who came up under Holiday. While I was glad to see that he is in your database the playlist that followed couldn't have been more wrong. Craig is a Jewish musician and his holiday song was for chanukkah but everything else that came up was for christmas. So, your service isn't taking lyric content into consideration. . .

2) Please have someone look into adding RebbeSoul (www.rebbesoul.com) Bruce is a musician's musician who is taking Jewish music into new realms. This is world music that incorporates collected ambient sound, traditional instruments and even rap and hip hop beats. While you are at it, check out his other band, Common Tongue.

Thanks!

Hi, just wanted to say hi and congratulate you on this project, I've only just started using it yesterday and am already hooked. I am a ferocious music devourer and cant get enough new music. Living in mexico City makes it really hard to find good cd's and at a good price, so listening to your (mine?) radio stations is excellent for finding out about new stuff.

Keep up the good work, I'll keep listening!

So what happens when you don't give a song thumbs up or thumbs down? You just listen. How does it affect your station? Does it assume that you like the song or what does it do relative to that?

Hi, I've been a Pandora fan for just under a year and enjoy listening whenever I can.
I have a 'problem' I'm wondering if you can help me. My 8 year old daughter was in a talent show at school. She played a song on the piano. Everything went great!! However, when her peers performed songs that are currently popular, she was unable to sing along with her friends because she had never heard them before.
I am totally clueless as to how to help her 'fit in' in regards to the music of her peers.
Do you know what 8 yr. old children are listening to? How can I program Pandora to play that kind of music?

Thanks,
Sara

Posted by: Sara at May 26, 2006 09:09 AM

I've only been a user for a day and I'm very impressed. I also subscribe to Rhapsody and while I've enjoyed that service Pandora is much better for discovering new music. Rhapsody lets you play stations of songs from similar artists, but I find that a lot of songs that I don't like find their way into those mixes.

I see that Pandora's supported on Squeezebox. Are there any plans to support the Roku Soundbridge? I use the Sounbridge to play Rhapsody in other rooms of my house and I'd love to do that with Pandora too.

Keep up the great service!

Can't tell you how much I like this!!! Found you via the PC Magazine article and hope that doesn't get you so many new listeners that it affects the site!

I agree with the suggestions that the ablilty to mis stations would be great and would allow for more lengthy listening sessions.

Sara:

I have two daughters very close to the age of your daughter (one of whom also plays the piano!).

Hands down, their favorite station on Pandora is "Hillary Duff Radio". I've never even had to give a thumbs up or down to anything--they have
just loved it from song one. My wife and I even enjoy the station for its upbeat fun and energy.

Please let us know how it works for your daughter.

I think that you should also sort the songs by what it is sung as. You know country, pop, rock, or any other style. I like some songs but I don't know who they're by or what the title is and that would help a lot.

Posted by: Laura Rothstein at May 26, 2006 04:01 PM

I've been using the service for just a few days now, and I haven't touched WinAmp since. I do miss some of my more obscure tracks (a collection of all the various Doctor Who theme songs, for example), but I'm generally having a great time with Pandora.

A suggestion/complaint: why can't I STOP a song, as opposed to PAUSING it? If I'm headed out of the house and have left off on a good song, I don't want to miss it, and I can't manually play it, so being able to simply stop it and listen to it from the beginning when I get home ('cause the gods know I don't turn my computer off) would be a much more convenient option.

I haven't spelunked around the Pandora site too much, so this suggestion might be something you already have, but some explicit instructions on how to shape and mold our stations would be very helpful. I want to know exactly what a Thumbs Up means, and how it affects my mix.

Thanks again! It's a great service. I hope this becomes the new model for web-based music broadcasting. It's a great idea.

How about publishing a whie paper on how the stuff actually works. What issues did you face, How did you tackle them? What architecture do you guys use? Ofcourse this might be against the company's policy but incase if it isn't then i would so much love to see such a thing.

Hate to bring this up but do you guys are planning to incorporate diff languages too? Lets say Hindi for Example.

P.S: i'm willing to help incase i can in any of the above mentioned endevours.

Hei Lucia

Thank you very much for this reeeaaaaly nice radio! I like it soooo much that I even forget to study for my big english exams because I just can't stop discovering the music universe. Here in Switzerland, we have lots of goa - partys. Usually they are outdoors, people look like late hippies and while dancing all night long till sunday or monday they are (unfortunately) taking lots of drugs. I don't know if you know this music, as it is more an india-europe thing. On Pandora, I miss my favourite goa-artist which is DJ Yahel (Israel). It would be nice to have him on the side of infected mushroom or astral projection... and of course there are many more goa-artists...

Thank you for reading... and greetings from Zurich.

Posted by: Lizzy at May 30, 2006 11:55 PM

I think it's great that pandora offers the music uncensored, but I have one suggestion. Would there be a way for you guys to flag songs that have profanity in them and then allow users to decide if they want their station to be "profanity free" or not. If they do, songs that might be played that have profanity would simply not be played. This would be great for at home with the kids around, or at work, or other situations where you don't want the f-bomb being dropped over your radio. In other situations where it doesn't matter, you could unclick the "profanity free" button and enjoy all the f-bombs you want. I love pandora and this is just a suggestion that I thought would make it better! Thanks and keep it up.

Fantastic service - discovering many new artists here!

Integration with iTunes idea:

Scan iTunes library and make suggestions by Genre or by ALL songs in the iTunes library...

With Music Store - based on purchases make new suggestions...

Or simply crete your own stand alone player with the option to purchase the songs right there, with suggestions of course...

Cheers,

Lucas

I read on your site that you would like to add classical music, but don't yet know how to deal with it. You must have considered using the Library of Congress classification system? If not, you can download it at

Hey I am getting far too obsessed with pandora than is healthy, great idea! How the hell does Pandora work??? Is the music categorised by each individual song? Im assuming it has to be done by people, as surely a computer cant recognise "strong male vocalist" etc... so how do the people in charge make the subjective decisions? For example, I would hold Morrissey as the ultimate front man, but this is never cited on my Smiths radio... also, do you know when/if Pandora is going to be licsensed in the UK? We in England are having to be resourceful to hear it(ie using the White House's zip code to register...)
keep up the good work!

Posted by: Zoe at June 9, 2006 10:55 AM

Ever since my boyfriend came home and told me about pandora I couldn't be happier. I live where the music stations I like to hear won't come in on my house radio but sometimes while driving will come in and out. I don't even listen to my cd's really anymore let alone mess with antena wire to hear what I want any more. I have tried a few songs that pandora does not find but says they're look into it cause their always open to new music. Hopefully they will find and add them soon. Their is maybe one thing I've always wanted out of my radio station to hear the only reason why it makes me mad that I can't get it in my house, it is called the love show from 10pm till 2am playing old school music like computer love by zapp and roger, or all cried out but I don't know who sings it which is what I'm getting at. I love the music in that time slot and to not know the singers or song titles is hard when looking on pandora. Maybe someone could listen and so when I type in a song like computer love they'll add music more like that cause it adds music I think don't go with that. I do really love pandora and have been able to find music they just don't play anymore on the radio like, Don't fight the feeling by Too Short music they never played on the radio by the 2 Live Crew. I'm like in a music heaven where pretty much most rap music past and present comes into my home without having to try and find some of the cd's I like cause where I live you can't buy any good rap music pretty much and if you do it's all censored which I can't stand cause some of the best parts of the song are either beeped out or changed to something else. I understanding wanting to censore young kids but as a parent of a 9 year old girl who I've never not played something just because she was in the room. She knows as long as I better not hear some of the musics words come out of her mouth. She like Eminem and one of her favorite songs since she was about 3 and a half has been by Master P the rapper. Parents who tell their kids you can't listen to music like that just makes them want to more and just cause you don't let them does not mean they won't hear it some where else like a friends.
I am a pandora lover forever and thing its the greatest thing to come around. Finally someone to have the same kind of conversation I am.

Thanks Pandora

The Frank Sinatra station is great! I def. agree with the idea of rotating and/or merging stations. I tend to listen to pretty much everything on the reg. radio while driving (the equivalent of channel-surfing on cable, if you will), as I like variety and hate commercials. Would be nice to have that kind of shuffling option here.

I love Pandora!!!! As you said, it allowed me to discover songs and singers I've never heard before.
For about five years I only listened to one band (maybe the most famous trio in pop music history), one of the members was my best friend. Since he passed away on Jan. 2003, I can't listen to them anymore, so I started to look for new (and old) stuff. Meeting Pandora was fantastic. My Josh Groban radio (believe it or not "You raise me up" is playing right now there) is exactly what I was looking for.
And the way you keep in touch with us, your listeners, is wonderful.
Thanks a lot!!!!

I love. Love. LOVE. this service!

I have found a small branch around an obscure group. Because it doesn't have a great deal of influences, the station defaults to the band I created the station with every 4-5 songs.

THIS IS NOT A FLAW! I love it! I have another station built that will give me a great deal of newer music, but I love having access to a small self-contained subset of the genome.

Thank you! I have evangelized you to anyone who will listen, and recently had a few people take a look at the service after I put it up at a party.

One feature I really like about shared stations is being able to see the definition e.g. the songs and artists that were used to determine and influence the playlist. However this info has not been available for days now. I'm sure this is a minor techno-glitch, but I hope it gets fixed soon!

Hi Brandon -

Thanks for your interest in Pandora!

You can update your email address from the Pandora home page.

You do this by clicking "account" at the top right of the page, and then "edit" under Account Info.
You will enter an area where you can modify all your data-- including email, password, and other information.
Please note that changing your email address here also changes your Pandora login.
