New Orleans
I need to go in reverse order on this one. Spent the last night at Maple Leaf Bar near Tulane's campus listening to Papa Grows Funk. Monday regulars for the past 4 years. For anyone who has ever played in a band and really tried to funk, you know how hard it is to really funk.

Papa Grows Funk could FUNK...
It's an incredibly difficult thing for a band to find. The drummer needs to have impeccable time, but also have the perfect organic sloppy groove to make it hum. The bassist needs to be telepathically connected to the kick drum and know just how long to hold notes. The guitarist needs to skank like a madman, and know when not to play... and everyone else needs to know how to stay out of the way. And the soundguy has to have the mix dialed in. When it all comes together it's pretty magical. John Gros, bandleader and B3 player, got a performance degree on French Horn, but gravitated to big band and funk after college. These guys are out continuosly - all over the US.
Earlier that afternoon hung out on the Tulane campus for a battle of the bands final, after chatting with Jeremy on WTUL.

Also visited the legendary Tipitinas jazz club - now part of a non-profit. It was first built to create a venue for Professor Longhair - Blues great. Cool layout with a wrap-around balcony overlooking the stage and mainfloor.

First night I saw some great bluegrass at Check Point Charleys. Mountain Sprout jammed - lead by Grayson on Banjo (who plays on the streets for tips all day). The dexterity of these banjo players is amazing. And while I listened to music I did my laundry. Really. Check Point boasts a self-service laundromat!!

So much of the city was wrecked by the storm, and many are nervous about the exodus that has really undercut the whole economy. But every hall had music, even on Monday and Tuesday.
On to Biloxi...

Funk is a noun, not a verb. It's conceivable that the band you saw HAVE the funk, but they do not funk.
Posted by: Mert at April 5, 2006 10:16 AM
I beg to differ. The band All That has a song entitled "Funk With Me", so some practitioners of the art form clearly view funk as a verb as well as a noun.

Great site. Only suggestion is that it would be nice to be able to fast forward through a song to quickly see if you like it all. When is Apple going to buy you?
Posted by: Don at April 5, 2006 04:09 PM
Hi!
This is just a great site.
Fantastic idea, and brilliant implementation.
The only thing that is annoying is: when I add a song to my favourites, the page with all of them pops up. It would be nice to add the song silently.
Thanks for the site!

Ha! I opened for Papa Grows Funk once. That brought a smile to my face to see their name. Their drummer is insanely good. He funks. Pandora ROCKS!
Posted by: John at April 11, 2006 02:30 PM
Papa Grows Funk is a blast live - esp at the Maple Leaf. Unfortunately Pandora doesn't know them. I still dig pandora though. It would be great if it was integrated with more stand alone hardware solutions or even XBMC.

Is that Phil Jupitus playing keyboards?
(New to Pandora, very impressed!)

They no longer play together, but try to find some CDs, created by a local band called "Benny Grunch & the Bunch". They were a novelty band, that played locally for about 20-25 years. They sang songs about N.O. They broke up, after hurricane Katrina hit. A couple of their famous songs were:
The 12 Yats of Christmas
There Ain't No Place to Pee on Mardi Gras Day
WWL-TV Channel 4, out of New Orleans, play the music video to "The 12 Yats of Christmas" twice a year, during the Christmas season.
The break-up of this band was one of the most heartbreaking current events to befall N.O., after Katrina (at least in my opinion). It would be nice to have them back, in some form anyway.
Thanks.

It is great to hear you went to N.O. I miss the city. Haven't you gone to Frenchman Street? That is the place - I mean, street - you go if you want to hear good jazz. Snug Harbor, DBA, Spotted Cat etc...
There a bunch of great jazz bands you should check it out....Ex: Davy Mooney Trio, The Vipers, Hot Club of New Orleans, Astral Project...all great!!!!!

sorry i missed you coming to my hometown, i just found out about you guys a few days ago, and i think you are awesome.
Pandora is badass, and the Music Genome Project is genius. i understand that they need to be further refined, but looking at wikipedia with their user based input, i'm sure you guys have struck gold.
as far as music in new orleans, jazz fest is goin on right now, but don't pay tourist prices for local bands. next time you come down, please check out a brass band or three. they put on a great live show. so does the Morning 40 Federation

Pandora is really a very good idea and reality.I just regret that I can't find one of my favoutit, ie Mr. KID ORY AND HIS CREOLE JAZZ BAND which FOR ME is one of the famous jazz band ( New Orleans DIXYLAND type ) as GOOD as Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet,Duke Elington , Jango Reihnard or the Rosenberg Trio etc...
COULD YOU PLEASE ADD THIS ARTIST TO YOUR FAMOUS GENOME ?????

Hey I recently just found pandora and I love it I put my music on at work and jam all day!! By the way
that must have not been your first time eating crawfish because most people that come here are scared of them and think that us cajuns are nasty for eating them critters!! Thanks for getting the site together i love it!!
Posted by: kimber at August 2, 2006 12:58 PM
Hey! Love the site, but you're missing one thing. You guys don't have the best band EVAAAR, Meriwether! They're a Louisiana band and they ROCK! Check them out and add them to the site please!!
Posted by: erin at August 4, 2006 10:47 AM
Great job guys, just got connected to your line, however the "skips" got to go!!!!
Enjoying the sounds!!! Thanks

This is a super site; i've heard some great bands i'd never heard before.
Re. great funk: Jon Cleary is amazing. I think he's currently playing with Bonnie Raitt, but is a regular in the New Orleans' clubs.
The music scene is definitely alive here. On Frenchmen Street one can hear klezmer, jazz, and even classical in a single block!
Keep up the good work and hope you come back to Nola soon.
Posted by: melanie at August 20, 2006 09:47 AM
What?? I just looked for Clifton Chenier and he's not in your database!! For shame!!! Please correct his oversight ASAP.
Thanks,
Pestomama
Love Pandora otherwise.
Posted by: pestomama at August 22, 2006 09:46 AM
This is the greasy wheel again. I can't seem to find any zudeco music on Pandora. What's with that? Please add it to your data base.

Great site, but why no BeauSoleil? Check out "La Danse de la Vie". When will you be adding cajun & zydeco?

Love the music, and thanks for coming to New Orleans. I have lived here since birth, and we need more people to visit and return to their home to tell friends that there is devistation, but we are working on recovering, and the places tourists want to visit are up and running.
Posted by: Kevin at September 15, 2006 10:21 AM
Hay man,
Next time you are in New Orleans you have to check out a Morning 40 Federation show at One Eyed Jack. It's the place to see them. Or just check out their new album.

I've been having some fun creating radio stations based on the play list for each week's "American Routes" radio show (Nick Spitzer, et. al). Makes for great listening during the rest of the week.
This web-site is absolutely fantastic, keep up the great work, I'm loving it!

PANDORA is fantastic !
I'm an Orleanian who left NOLA to attend Burning Man a week before the flood .... the irony of being in the most arid place in N. America while my home took 7 feet of water was not lost on me ... since then I took a job in Portsmouth, VA at an opera-scene-design-and-build company ( all those Mardi Gras developement skills ARE useful outside the Crescent ! )
I keep going back to NOLA every chance I get because I miss the MUSIC ! NO PLACE LIKE IT ... ANYWHERE ! ... so Pandora, I recommend coming BACK TO NOLA ... and adding more-more-more of our musicians :
such as :
JON CLEARY
ERIC LINDELL
TOMMY MALONE
I've started laughing now because anyone who knows NOLA knows that such a list would be infinite ... LOVE YOUR SITE --- DON'T GO THE WAY OF OTHER "RADIO" ---
Creating "regional" playlists would be interesting ... only artists from particular regions regardless of their genre .....
PEACE and GODD MUSIC !!!!

There seems to be a dearth of radio stations that play Southern Gospel Music in the New Orleans listening area. Am I right? I can't find any stations. Can this be rectified? Most people here do not even know who Bill Gaither is! Help!
Posted by: Gene Bordeaux at November 16, 2006 10:56 AM
There are a lot of New Orleans bands that you should definetly give a listen.
Might I suggest the following:
Liquidrone
The Morning 40 Federation
Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes
Lump
Consortium of Genius
Black Mountain
Inbred Bipeds
Pitts vs. Preps
Catch Velvet
New Orleans Jazz Vipers
Egg Yolk Jubilee

Tim, outstanding job! Kudos to you and your VERY fortunate staff! This is a dreamjob!!! nola's is the scene for electrified funk, no dought! I'm from Baton Rouge and while attending LSU, my friends and I would go to Tip's ie., Tippitina'a and jimmy's. The Radiators, where frequent..An extremely tight sound while still able to keep the freeflowing, headshaking GROOVE! Ed's a beast with it!!! almost a blend of Little feat/Dr. john! Well Today the band following these mighty footsteps is Widespread Panic! Hey, Deadhead's have have something to do!

I live in Huntsville, Texas now, but I'm Originally from southwest Louisiana and would like to know if you've ever ventured in cajun music. Its pretty hard to find that kind of music
where I live. Some of the cajun artist are good freinds of mine like Jimmie Newman. Sammy Kershaw is from my home town in Kaplan, La. Love
the music you play. I've only discovered Pandora recently. Keep up the good work. Thanks

I just joined this Pandora and you really need to come back and get with the cajun side of louisiana, the "swamp pop" music is great here and i never hear it nationally. We have Aaron Foret, Wayne Foret, Wayne toups, Don Rich, Jake and the nifty fifties, these are great bands from louisiana. I had some friends come in from out of town and they fell in love with this music. I send them cd's every chance i get.
