Hattiesburg
Wound my way up to Hattiesburg, home of the University of Southern Mississippi and little known fact, home to the world's first rock recording. Anyone know what it is? Had a nice lunch and chat with John Smith - longtime band manager and mainstay of the Hattiesburg music scene. Popped our heads in on his latest project, Friday Night Gigolos who were working on the finishing touches to their CD. Familiar vibe of the studio..."let's isolate the kick and bass guitar..."
John riffed on what is fast becoming a familiar theme - organic growth of bands. Worked with 2LiveCrew, Afroman...
and many others. Clearly another guy who cares about the bands.
Stopped in on the rehearsal of the USM big band under the direction of Larry Panella, tenor saxphonist and I learned a grad of UNT in Denton (small world). They play in a refurbished firehouse. Nice space.

Spent a while talking with Larry about his experience as a teacher. Very interesting to learn that the real catalyst behind the jazz programs at many of these large southern colleges has been a desire to assemble a good marching band for the football team. All music scholarships come with some kind of commitment to the marching band. Larry is a lot like a college athletic coach in that he recruits too -attends competitions, hosts summer programs, networks with high school teachers. Goes as early as middle school... I can picture the documentary: "Jazz Dreams"
After an interview with studentprintz, the college paper, I had the pleasure of talking with Clinton Kirby, Music Director for WUSM, the student radio.

Made a bee line to T-Bone Records, the local choice fo indie music. Owner Harry Crumpler plied me with a bunch of local favorites. Had a nice conversation with Jackie Lee from theburger.net, a local entertainment paper that she started. Always love talking to other entrepreneurs.

Ended the night at the Thirsty Hippo - the consensus favorite music spot. Shared a drink with Tandy Byrd and Ross Walton. Tandy runs a great local online site - deadmandancing.com Total labor of love that has become the go-to site for info on local bands and entertainment.
On to Tennessee...

Thought I'd send ya a link to a band that I'd like to see on the player. Hope this isn't the wrong place to do it.
They're a band from North Carolina.

THIS IS THE BEST ONLINE MUSIC STATION EVER. NOT JUST THE WELL KNOWN TRACKS BUT SOME DEEP CUTS. I REALLY ENJOY THIS STATION. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK.
Posted by: JOHN at April 17, 2006 05:36 PM
I just joined up at Pandora, and I love it! the only problem is that you guys seem to have no classical music at all. I realise that it may not be as popular, but there are those of us out there who like it a lot! I am really enjoying the stations that I have though, and I am finding music that I didn't even know I liked! thank you!
Posted by: Erin at April 18, 2006 08:23 AM
I can't sleep without Pandora, I try to find a different jazz station each night before I sleep, but last night my virus check kicked in and my computer couldn't handle pandora/macromedia with all the resources being used up, suffice it to say I didn't sleep well.

This is by far not only the best idea for internet radio I've seen but also the most well done. Not only is the system smart and accurate, the interface is entirely intuitive and slick. Most independent web applications have sparse, ugly appearances, and if that's what Pandora looked like I'd still be a huge fan, but you guys went the extra mile and produced a completely polished product. If I could make a suggestion, you should have a section on your site for user raves like mine, everyone I know who uses Pandora loves it!

I Live Here In Bordentown New Jersey & I Found You By Accident & I Do Love My Country Music Along With Some Rock & Roll. I Am Very Happy That I Found This Station. I Listen To CMT Country Radio. I Was Borned In West Virginia . I Am 69 Years & I Love My Music So Thank You Very Much. There Is A Lot Of My Old Favorites That I Listen To. Makes you Want To get Up & Dance Which I Do. I Just Enjoy My Music. Thank You Again.

Oh my god, you are a genious. This is the single coolest thing ever. So long have I been stuck either listening to the radio and not likeing half the songs and wanting my own station, or listening to my music and getting bored of it. This is exactly what I have been looking for. I cannot compliment you enough. I do think it'd be cool to be able to see the inputs you made and see how what you like in music has changed over time. Like I started with one type of music and now it brings up music from other generes that I didn't necessarily like before, but now I do. It's pretty cool.
Posted by: John at April 18, 2006 01:16 PM
hey guys, love the site, have recommended it to just about everybody i know and they love it too!
one thing i would suggest however is a slightly more refined track choosing system as i put in an emo/screamo band and came out with power metal, which altho nice to listen for a change wasnt exactly what i was looking for.
perhaps some sort of 'loose genre' choosing system? nothing too constrictive, but just so that you get what you want as i'm sure there are millions of bands out there i havnent heard of yet in my preferred genre.. guess i'll just have to keep listening to pandora :o
anyways, keep up the good work :)

Just wanted to let you guys know that your idea is awesome. I love it. I do have just one request. My absolute favorite composer is John Williams. He has written the music for great movies such as Star Wars Episodes I - VI, Indianna Jones Trilogy, Jaws, Superman, and many others. I found that he is not on your site. When you get around to it, it would be awesome if you added him. Thanks!

If you're in Mississippi, you might want to come through Jackson. I live in Jackson, and the music scene here is really strong. Hattisburg is great too, but I really thing that the Jackson scene is the best in Mississippi.

wow, what else can I say other than I'm overly impressed with your inivation. here's something my father would tell me when I do something right in life, he'd tell me that I'd 'done well,' so since I know you'll probly never talk to me or even read this, I'll leave you with "you done well." you definately did it right, and you did it well.

Not sure when you'll hit Chicago but if there in the summer head north to Milwaukee for Summerfest! It's June 29-July 9. Great music festival! If you make it contact me.

Thank you for remaining available to an admirer in Canada, running an old Mac 6500/250 through an ethernet modem. I've got the Virtual Memory cranked up and the modem gets pretty busy sometimes, but the most wonderful music continues to play untended. And the site just keeps expanding and improving! I am very impressed with your achievement, and hope you will soon be accepting paid subscriptions in your neighbor country to the north. Best Wishes.

I would like to see more Brazilian music.
Daniela Mercury, Gilberto Gil, Elise Regina, Vanessa DeMatta, Marisa Monte are superstars which are awesome vocalists, backed by great joyful rhythms.
Pandora can introduce new worlds to people. The advantage to world music is that they have not abandoned melody or real instruments.
Posted by: Whitman at May 1, 2006 08:20 AM
hey dude,
If you are going to make the effort to Chi town, you gotta make an extra hour and half trip to Milwaukee. You have a place to stay here close to the city, the airport, and Lake Michigan. I'm sure to steer you in the right direction to an outstanding Indie record store called Rushmore Records let alone some killer music venues. Let me know if'n you can make the trek.

Maybe a mis-spelling on the directory?
I agree with Cory BTW, Milwaukee is a great place to visit (I live there too) and we have Summerfest, a huge, week-long music festival at the end of June. You guys could check it out. :-)

Hey Tim,
C'mon out to Denver, buddy. We got tons of music, tons of beer, and if I have anything to do with it, tons of Pandora fans. Also, some pretty killer indie stops along the way (then, there is always Red Rocks, the gift given to us solely for music and good times!!!)
Spring is underway in the High Country and I am sure some Pandora-presence with us at altitude is not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
Enjoy the trip. All the best.

I see that your route will be crossing close to either of the cities I would call home: either Louisville, KY or Columbus, OH.
It's a beautiful time to come to the Midwest. If you are passing through - contact me and see if you want to take a day or two to hang out and see what's up here. There are tons of interesting local bands at a variety of notoriety and even more music aficionados (fiends) who would love to talk music with you... not to mention beautiful women out in droves, great food, a free couch to sleep on, and whatever else. No pressure, but it would be fun for us and probably for you as well.
thanks!

Hey Tim,
Have you considered visiting Oxford, MS. Fat Possum records is located there, which has been the home label for many blues musicians like R.L. Burnside.
Posted by: Mike at May 7, 2006 10:09 PM
hey tim!
i know jackson, ms wasn't on your trip plan but two popular local bands are "Go Fiction" and "The Rockwells" they both have albums out (on amazon and itunes respectively) so if you have time, give them a listen!

Hi Tim,
Thanks for your work at Pandora - it's inspirational - and thanks for visiting my hometown, Hattiesburg. The answer to your question about the first rock and roll recording can be found in Wikipedia:
Birthplace of Rock and Roll
It is a little-known fact that a number of music scholars consider Hattiesburg to be the historic birthplace of rock and roll. As noted in the Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock and Roll, Hattiesburg was a recording location of Blind Roosevelt Graves and his brother, Uaroy Graves, who, along with piano player Cooney Vaughn, recorded two songs in 1936 that "...featured fully formed rock & roll guitar riffs and a stomping rock & roll beat." The Graves Brothers and Vaughn--performing as the Mississippi Jook Band--recorded the songs 'Barbecue Bust' and 'Dangerous Woman' for the American Record Company, reportedly at the Hattiesburg Train Station.

Just throw'n this name out there...I guess they are becoming more well known, but if not, you should definitely check out a North Mississippi All-Stars show. They're a great blend of blues, rock, and even rap. I've personally seen them play in Oxford, MS at the Library. Always a great show; lots of energy and crowd involvement. I think they may be under Dave Matthews' label ATO Records, but I'm not quite sure. --Timmy J

I can't believe you were around my neck of town and I missed it. I hate that I joined in too late. I have to say I have tried many stations that say they cater to your style, but you beat them by far. I hope you enjoy the visit here in MS and remember one thing--- BUG SPRAY!
Love ya
