Progress

We've made a handful of changes tonight at Pandora. Among these are one you can just barely see, and one you can't see at all.

The first is a tiny (some would say almost invisible) progress indicator underneath the album art for the currently playing song to give you an idea of how much time is left in the song. It's just a tiny little stripe. Look for it closely.

The other change is a pretty big one, but you won't be able to see it at all. You'll have to listen for it. We've updated our playlist engine to play a greater variety of music on your stations. For some time we've known that we weren't playing the full breadth of songs in the Music Genome Project collection. This was a problem with our approach to playlist generation; it really didn't have anything to do with the size of the collection itself. We've been hard at work on this, and tonight we're rolling out a significant upgrade to the playlist generator. Don't expect to notice a big change right away, in fact it might take a few hours of listening before you notice at all, but it's there. Your stations really will be playing all kinds of music that they wouldn't have before. Hope you enjoy the new music.

One other feature in this release that's worth pointing out is a new choice in Guide Us: "I'm tired of this song." Let's face it, there are some great songs out there that we've all heard just one too many times. Now there's a way to tell Pandora that you've heard something one too many times: just click Guide Us and select the "I'm tired of this song" choice and we'll put the current song back on the shelf and not play it again on any of your stations in the next 30 days.

As always, this release has a number of other subtle little changes; my favorite this time out is that the songs fade out as you skip or change stations. Just another tiny little detail.

If you want to really explode this let people add their stations like you can add youtube videos....second set it up where users can make a small percentage of your profits...maybe 2 cents a purchase.....Pay people to play.

Use this idea please I want to get started lol

I love the "I'm tired of this song" option. That is a great idea!

I'm excited to hear some new stuff, too. Keep up the great work!

Wow thats awsome, thank you for all your hard work. i wanted to suggest the time left thing, but you beat me to it. thanks again and keep on with the good work.

thanks guys for all that you're doing. I listen to Pandora almost all the time when I'm at my computer and love love love the selections. I'm Asian and for sure would love for there to be more international selections, but what can i say, I am more than grateful for what you guys have compiled so far, which is absolutely mind blowing. Oh, and the changes, though subtle, are wonderful. Great Job and thank you once again.

I like the feature; "I'm tired of this song"!
You should also add it to the popup (left-klick on the album) since I (and most others?) rather use it because it's the quickest way to skip ahead.
Keep up the good work!
Greetings from Visby, Sweden.

Hey, thanks for the time line. This little thing helps me make a decision as to whether to skip a song, or just let it play out.

Pandora keeps getting better and better.

I just noticed the fade-out addition, though "Boy, I don't remember that . . ." and checked the blog, sure enough -- some updates were made -- as usually, subtle but excellent changes. The progress meter is a great little addition. I'd never have noticed it without reading this, but once aware of its existence it's just right.

That said, a little notification within Pandora that pops up to let us know of updates the first time it's run after the update would be a welcome addition. Also, is there anyway to un-tire of a song? If not, that might be a nice addition -- I might be tired of it now, but in a week or two I might wish I wasn't abstaining for an entire month!

Posted by: Allen at March 28, 2006 07:34 AM

Ooh, I love the little progress bar, and I can't wait to see what else is on here. Thank you. :D

It would be neat if there were a way to ban songs without that affecting the rest of the station. I mean, the whole point of this is obviously to find music you like best so you can buy it, but I keep running into songs that I like from a musical perspective but don't like for their own sake. Like songs that remind me of things I don't want to think about, or songs with really well-sung yet really annoying lyrics; I like similar music, just not that exact song.

Posted by: Greenling at March 28, 2006 08:00 AM

That's awesome! I am addicted! I can't stop listening! Thanks!

Hey guys.

The new stuff sounds great. However....

I've been listening via the Opera browser for months, and this morning's Progress Version won't load in it. I thought you were down, until I checked in Safari.

Hope this is a temporary glitch. I would hate to not be able to listen to my favorite music site in my favorite browser.

Best,

o

This is the best site that I have encountered for music. The set-up, the choices of music are endless. What more can a listener ask for? No other can compare and I know because I have been to them all. Please keep up the good work and never go anywhere!!!!!!

Posted by: Ms. Lee at March 28, 2006 08:39 AM

Hey, you got us. Sounds like we broke some version of Opera. We work on 8.52 on th Mac and Windows but apparently there are versions out there that aren't working.

The new version of Pandora has a change that makes Pandora work with the new version of IE6 (the version of IE that respects the Eolas Patent). This changed the way we embedd our player in the page. I suspect this had the unfortunate side effect of breaking some Opera versions. We'hunting for a reproducable case now. Of course that was completely unintentional. Once we figure out which browsers are affected we'll get a fix together.

OK, I'm not going mad. It took me a couple of songs to realize the "Thumbs up" now automatically appears on songs I've already marked "Like."
Many thanks for another great idea (especially for those of us with bad memories).

With massive amounts of gratitude for this service

Nope Jay you're not going mad! We finally did the right thing and made sure that the thumbs showed up each time you saw a song you'd previously rated.

It sounds like some of you are finding that our page loads, but no player appears on the page. It looks like the problem is related to ad blocking features in Norton Internet Security 2006. At least that's one possible cause. If you turn off ad blocking the player will appear. We're working on it from our side too. Stay tuned, and thanks for your patience.

I am thoroughly enjoying this! Like someone posted -- I listen at work, so it is not a sit-down-and-listen experience. Eclectic is the rule. I have had fun using a popular cover song and adding new content via the "i want to add more kinds of music . . ."
Thanks!

Great, I'm loving Pandora more and more.
What about CLASSICAL MUSIC? I couldn't find very much...

Posted by: ignazio at March 28, 2006 11:45 AM

Hi Ignazio,

The approach we take to playlist construction is based on what we call "music analysis". Our team of music-analysts listen to music one song at a time and document the underlying musical characteristics for each song. Right now we analyze Jazz, Rock, Country, Hip Hop, Dance, and Electronica music. We're also hard at work on Latin music. We love classical music too, and have designed an approach for capturing the unique features of world music -- you can imagine that the instruments, playing style, harmonics, and construction are different enough that a different vocabulary of attributes is required. We'll be working our way through a catalog of classical music, but it is a time consuming process. It will take us a while to get to "critical mass," but we will get there.

Hi, I open the Pandora BMusic Box almost every day, looking for musical treasures, sometimes it it makes me sad like i when could not find Peter Hammill for my favorite Van Der Graaf Generator Station, But mostly Pandora makes me very happy and put a smile on my ears. Keep up the good work.

There's a problem with last night's release of Pandora and Norton Internet Security 2006 (NIS). NIS has a feature that blocks advertising. With our latest changes, it's decided that our player is an advertisement. We are working on a fix and will have it rolled out in the next 24 hours. In the meantime, there are three ways to work around the problem.

The easiest, using Internet Explorer:

1) Using Internet Explorer, open http://www.pandora.com and click on the yellow Norton icon to the right of "Norton Internet Security". If the menu has a checkmark beside "Block ads on this site", uncheck it. Reload the page and Pandora should now work.

NOTE: Even if you use another browser such as Firefox as your main browser, method #1 will work because it adds "pandora.com" to the "whitelist".

Optional method for people who don't want to run Internet Explorer, even for 10 seconds:

2) Click on the Norton Internet Security icon in the taskbar, then select "Options" and then "AntiSpam". On the window that pops up, select "General" underneath "Ad Blocking" in the left-hand part of the window. Now click the "Advanced" button and another window will pop up. On the right hand side of the window (labeled "Ad Blocking"), find the "linksynergy.com" entry. Select it and click "Remove". Select "Yes" in the confirmation dialog, then clck "OK" on the windows to close them.

There is an option #3, which is to turn off ad-blocking completely:

3) Click on the Norton Internet Security icon in the taskbar, then select "Options" and then "AntiSpam". On the window that pops up, select "General" underneath "Ad Blocking" in the left-hand part of the window. Uncheck the box labeled "Turn on Ad Blocking", then click "OK".

Sorry we missed this tricky interaction before we released our update. Thanks for your patience as we work through the issue.

Thanks for adding the thumbs if the song has already
been ratet. That fucking rocks.

I love the changes! Keep up the good work. I really like how it keeps track of your past ratings of a song.

Discovered a lot of new music with your website :)

Posted by: Erik at March 28, 2006 07:13 PM

I'm looking forward to the greater variety in the mix. The "I'm tired of this song" feature frightens me. I think it might make it harder to adjust a station after I've banished a song for 30 days.

I'd still love to have a keyboard short cut for "Why did we play this"

Thanks again for everthing!

Posted by: minijonb at March 28, 2006 07:58 PM

I noticed today the fade-out feature and this made me come to your blog to figure out if it really was a new feature...
All the new changes are just great! Many thanks specially for displaying the thumbs for previously rated songs. It's very nice, because sometimes I was not sure of having rated a song in a Station. One question: Is this feature Station-dependent?
I'm still looking for the posibility of 'adding' a playing song to another station (some kind of 'I like this song for Station... ' or 'Add this song to Station' feature).

Anyway, thanks for all, and keep up working !!!

Posted by: 24may66 at March 29, 2006 02:43 AM

Thanks for the new additions. Adding more breadth was an important step: I was getting really frustrated with how often songs repeated after quite a few hours of thumbs-up and thumbs-down ratings.

Posted by: Dunce at March 29, 2006 04:49 AM

Just after midnight (Pacific) we rolled out a revision that corrects the conflict between Pandora and Norton Internet Security 2006. It also removes the requirement that JavaScript be turned on for the player to appear. For those of you that were affected yesterday, thank you for your patience. Let us know if you have any further problems.

Great new features!

By the way, I used to listen to Launch.com (Yahoo's music site) - I get the pro version because they are my ISP. But I have found I really prefer Pandora because your system is more intelligent, and, unlike Launch, you don't mess with my music preferences (every once-in-a-while they throw in a totally unrelated song to your station -- like Rap when I wanted Jazz -- because it is popular across the board -- this really ticks me off.) I also love how I can share my favorites page. They also REALLY need that "Don't play this song for a month" feature, but they do have classical and children's music, so I do head over there once in a while still.
Even with your minimal ads I think I have spent more money on CDs because of Pandora than Launch, so I think recording companies should fund you guys... :-)

Posted by: WillF at March 29, 2006 07:42 AM

Fantastic, liking the changes! I'd still like to see an API released for making our own flash interface - is this something you guys would think about making available? Even if it has to be approved, hosted on your site, etc I think it would be a fantastic option for the flash community that loves Pandora!

Also, a couple other items:
1) Would still like to see the search interface improved, including the ability to keep adding music (instead of just disappearing after an yes / no for add).
2) There seems to be a problem in Opera 9 Tech preview 2 for favorites. I try to access the page and it generates an error.

Great new stuff! I suddenly noticed that songs were fading out when I skipped them and was drawn to the blog to find out what else was new.

The 'don't play this song for a month' feature is great, although I would like to choose between a few different settings. Perhaps make it scalable by weeks?

Thanks so much for making it easy to fall in love with new music!

I don't know on whose side this would have to be done, but for what you're listening to, to appear on msn messenger (such as when using windows media player and i-tunes) would be nice.

The updates are good, keep it up

Posted by: zinc at March 29, 2006 03:39 PM

Hi Guys,

I really enjoy work you have done and I recommend it to all my friends and link to it on my blog!

I would consider some new features for nex player version.
Most important for me would be abillity to attach graphical eaqvalizer profile to every station I store.
It's standard pre-sets as well as freedom to customize sound as I want. 10 or 8 bands will be enough.
So for my Robert Miles station I choose "electronic" and for "Don't Explain" - jazz.

It will move you one step forward from competitors and add more people who still listen stand alone player

what do you think?

Posted by: Alexei Rebrov at March 29, 2006 03:42 PM

I'm liking the progress indicator! I wouldn't notice it unless you pointed it out. And I love the time-out feature. I wish I had thought of that.

And awesome blog, by the way. Again, didn't really surf the site until today.

Posted by: Hazel R at March 29, 2006 04:01 PM

Thank you very much for the new changes!

I noticed the fading in and out first off, and then raised an eye brow each time I saw the thumbs up sign on some of my songs. *grins*

Your work is highly appreciated. I have very eclectic and varied tastes in music, something no 'run of the mill' radio station can offer. Combined with my love for finding new music makes you my favorite.

Keep up the great work!

AAAGGG..I am not a reader of the blog but had to come today since I too thought I was going nuts..I didn't rember putting those thumbs up on there...not noticing the fade in and out?? Love the bar on the bottom..I tend to listen all the way though more. Thanks again Pandora..you make the work day go by smooth! :0)

I've been gone about two weeks and noticed the changes right away. Love Pandora enough to tell my friends. Keep up the good work.

Posted by: John Eric at March 30, 2006 04:36 PM

I thought there was something funky at the bottom of the CD cover! I've only been listening to Pandora for a couple weeks, so I thought I just hadn't noticed the progression bar at the bottom. I'll listen for the differences in the music, though! And I know that everyone's said this before, but I love your site. It's straightforward, not too flashy, and has a very sophisticated look to it. there are no hidden surprises, save for what's expected, which is the music itself. To one who has only used (and regretted using) Yahoo's launchcast before, this is like radio station nirvana.

Needless to say, I won't be leaving anytime soon.

Thank you for all your hard work,
Catherine.

Posted by: Catherine B. at March 31, 2006 08:38 AM

Pandora is pure genius. UI designers should learn from its gloriously straightforward yet still attractive interface. And the custom Aphex Twin-inspired radio station it creates for me is orgasm-inducing.

Thank you.

Fadeout is my favorite new feature, too!

I would try to bring these ideas to a job interview, but you all don't seem to have any applicable postings, so here you go (but if Tim gets sick of his road trip, "Pick me! Pick me!"):

If I had a shop/coffeeshop/restaurant/etc., I'd much rather have your service than Musak, HearMusic, etc. I could instantly change the atmosphere of my establishment based on the time of day, clientele (whether to please them or get them out!), or just my mood. Maybe you could even make it really cheap for places that don't mind hanging your branded flatpanel on the wall displaying ads and "Currently Playing" info.

You might want to develop a "master" receiver that can set up to be controlled by any number of clients, so spread-out employees can do changes from the nearest workstation. Maybe a Palm/WindowsMobile app to control the master from a Treo/etc, too.

I use the flashblock plugin in Firefox for various reasons, and I noticed there appear to be two flash programs, and I only need to run the one that appears second. If the upper one is or will be important for your business, you might want to try to implement it, although for the 50K(?) worldwide flashbock users, it might not be worth the effort.

Can I buy some of your stock options off you?!?

Posted by: Tom Guerin at April 2, 2006 01:52 PM

Question/Suggestion
At the risk of sounding fussy, is there a way to create a 4th tab in the Edit Station box: "Songs on Snooze" with an option to remove the song from the list? (As you can with the songs in the like/did not like tabs.)
I know you all just added this feature and I don't mean to whine but, (sniff) I just sent a song to "sleep" for 30 days and immediately changed my mind.

jk - who shouldn't be so danged indecisive...Or should I?

Posted by: Jay at April 3, 2006 03:22 PM

On the lines of what 24may66 wrote, I was recently listening to my kraftwerk station, and I got a song that made me think- hmmm, I love this song, but its not what I would want on my jazz station, not on this one. So it would be cool to be able to send that song to another of my stations for when I want to listen to that sort of music, and not get that kind on that station.

Posted by: Neil at April 6, 2006 05:02 AM

One suggestion that i just realised is why dont you create a widget of pandora for mac osx tiger. they can stream the net and would be a very elegant way of promoting pandora for mac users (which are already iTunes users)
Besides that, great work.

I really like the little indicator showing how much of the song is left... and the location is a creative one, something i have seen done before. Im always suprised at how many features can be packed into a little player.I enjoy minalism, because it can be very complex, and yet be uncluttered and packed full of features.. (hands clapping) done it again... ;)

Posted by: Joe Wilson at April 8, 2006 03:13 PM

I had this experience:
The song that was playing was nearing the end, but I clicked on "Guide Us" and "I'm tired of this song - don't play it for a month." Pandora started playing the next song and immediately skipped it. Obviously it chose the wrong song, and there's nothing I can do about it. The UI doesn't let us delete songs from the list of songs set to not play for a month.

More importantly, I think y'all should let users set how great a variety of music they want on their stations.

Previous to this latest change, Pandora was already typically adding over a hundred songs for every song a user added to a station. I'm not looking for a "Top 40" station of my own top 40 -- but if I *were* to input my favorite 40 songs into a station, Pandora would add over 4,000 more. My station would then consist of over 4,040 songs, 99% of which I've showed no particular interest in.

The CEO of another corporation once said, loosely quoted, 'the quickest way to profit is to serve the customer the way the customer wants to be served.

That corporation became the world's largest (GM).

I'm not opposed to Pandora's mission of exposing us to music we like, or have forgotten about. I'd just like the power to adjust the ratio of songs I've requested, to songs the analysts have deemed similar to them -- within limits, of course, due to Pandora's license.

Posted by: Bob-Tuba at April 8, 2006 03:34 PM

Hi Bob-tuba,

You're completely right here. We goofed by not letting you go back in and edit the list of "on the shelf" songs. I'm sure we'll correct that in a future relese.

We're working to give you as much control as we can within the confines of the "radio like" licenses -- one of the key limits is that we just can't play a station that consists of exactly the music you've specified. Having said that, you'll see us working to give you more fine grained control over what plays as the product matures -- it's just that it's a balancing act for us.

Is Pandora open to audience suggestions for new bands to add to the library? A couple of times, I have tried to create a new station, but Pandora didn't recognise the band... I'm sure lots of other listeners know some great bands that aren't in the library as well. (Sorry if there is already a post about this, I had a quick browse but couldn't find one!)

I love using pandora but recently i found a small proble when using it on MacBook which has the Mac OS X. I am not able to add any new artist or songs on my profile, but when i use pandora of my windows based desktop, i am able to. Can you please tell me a way i can add new artist as i use pandora alot and now when i am mobile, i would like to explore new artist on the move too.

Hi all. Love your work!!! Thanks for Pandora!!!

Few bugs to report:

Recently I can't seem to edit my stations at all. I can go to the edit station page and see all the artists in a station line up, and the songs I have thumbed-up etc., but when I check an artist and say remove, the page reloads in less thn a second, and nothing happens, it does not implement my changes.

Also I used Pink Floyd to create a station, and added Led Zepplin, and the station has taken a different direction than what I wanted. So I love the station and want to keep it, but whenever I use Pink Floyd to create a new station Pandora tells me 'we are now creating etc.', but then loads the first station, which I have renamed...

Please help....

Thanks
