Pandora in Portland - March 6th & 7th

Music Millenium.jpgI'm very excited to announce our trip next week to our friendly neighbors to the North. I'll be heading up to Portland, Oregon for a couple days of musical exploration and conversation - March 6th & 7th, 2006. The main event of the trip is a 'town hall' get together at Music Millenium (801 NW 23rd Avenue) on Tuesday evening at 6pm to talk radio and digital music. Terry Currier, the longtime owner has generously agreed to host us at this indie music mecca. I'll be joined by Rick Emerson, a much beloved local radio personality, active blogger, and longtime music industry commentator for a provocative discussion on 'radio in the digital age.' Peter Carlin, journalist for the Oregonian, and a thoughtful writer on media will moderate, incite and lead what will hopefully be a lively and informative conversation about the impact of the digital revolution on the modern music industry, with a particular focus on radio.

It should be great discussion. I hope you'll come by to join the conversation.

We have couple other events planned as well, including a meetup at Mississippi Pizza (3552 N Mississippi Avenue) on Monday evening at 6:30pm. After this I'll be heading over to Goodfoot Pub then possibly Ash Street Saloon to check out the local talent at their weekly open mics. Company is welcome. The more the merrier.

Last time I headed up I5, there were six of us packed in a van with the PA system and more music equipment that we should have been able to fit. This time I'm heading out with a laptop, boxes of T-shirts and caps, and empty bags that I hope to fill with a wonderful and eclectic collection of local recordings. I'm hoping to come away with a better understanding of the local music scene, and with armfuls of great new music for our musician analysts to sink their teeth into.

If you have any comments or suggestions please share your thoughts below. The musical conversation starts now!

Portland has too, too many great little bands! Let me at least plug a few friends: look for the Bad Mintons, and/or Bohemian Onslaught. I believe the Bad Mintons have a demo called "Cheaper than a Real Present". It's a must-listen!

Hi Tim!

We have a very active podcasting scene here in Portland, with many of them focusing on local music.

I've posted news of your visit and invite to our community's site, www.portlandpodcasting.org. Hopefully we can get some interested folks out there to meet and mingle with you!

Guys like Tim Germer of Northwest Noise (www.northwestnoise.com) know a ton about local bands and talent. I hope he can make it.

Welcome, and have fun in PDX! Let us know if you need anything while you're here. :-)

I look forward to your visit. The Pandora site was recommended to me a couple months ago and I really liked the format right away. I recommend it to everyone who is interested in finding new music.

Somewhere around the beginning of the digital revolution, I was grabbing mp3's by the hundreds as soon as I heard about Napster. At some point, my conscience caught up with me and I started to steer back to buying CD's. Nowadays, sites like Pandora and the ability to share iTunes playlists at work are a big asset for me. I learn a lot more about what I like before going to the store and making an impulse purchase. Hearing Portland bands on the Internet has also encouraged me to support local artists by buying discs and attending shows.

Thanks.

"I remember the last time I was in Portland..." 50 bonus points to the first person who can name the song that's from =:-)

I miss the PDX music scene something fierce. I'm going back 10 years to the birth of the Dandys, the heyday of Spinanes, and New Bad Things. Maybe I should just call in sick next week and make a road trip.

Enjoy the trip, Tim. If you ever need to check out the midwest vibe, come check out GRR... Grand Rapids, MI. We'll show you a good time.

Darn! I'm in Portland and only today (3/7) discovered that Pandora is going to be here - and I can't make it.

So close!

What I love about Pandora most is the quality (fidelity) of the music.

If this becomes a subscription service, not sure if I would pay for the randomness - versus say Napster's "my choice" plan.

Still - keep up the great work. Love it.

Damn! Missed you by about 200 miles (Seattle)! Oh well, keep up the good work. Just as a side note, I stopped listening to music about 6 years ago because I was stuck in the 90's alt scene. Thank you for keeping me there and introducing me to other stuff that I finally like!

Thanks a lot everyone for the suggestions, support and encouragement. Getting ready to head back down to San Francisco after two incredible days here. I didn't get time to do even a 10th of what I wanted to. But everything written here is firmly in the memory banks. Hope to make another visit. Actually, maybe I'll move to Portland. What an incredible town, and wonderful folks. Cheers. T.

I think it would be really nice if we could download to our desktop. this would help in 2 ways:
1:You wouldn't have to deal with slow internet.
2:You wouldn't have to worry about it being overridden when you click a link.

Tim, Check out "The Juice Kittens" in Dallas as well. They should be playing in the Deep Ellum area.

It would be a long and costly flight from the States, but there's a good bit of fresh, ambitious activity on offer out here in Tokyo (apart from the gawdawful top-40).

When are you coming to Seattle? If you come, be sure to sit down with Jason Geer, former intern of KEXP 90.3, a nationally renown station of uber-cool cutting edge bands. All my music collection comes from him. Seriously: 206-228-7200 is his number!

I noticed this is the closest you've traveled to California. Any plans to come by Southern Cali?

Hi Tim:

I LOVE Pandora! A friend recommended you and I was immediately hooked.

If you're still looking for good music from Portland, I've got two band's to recommend:

1) Richmond Fontaine (www.richmondfontaine.com)

2) I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House (www.icanlickanysob.com). This band's leader is Mike D, who is a former Green Beret who served in the first Gulf War. His views on the current administration and the Iraq war might surprise you.

Both of these bands fit the alt/country or americana genre, but, like alot of such bands, are hard to pigeonhole. I like 'em both.

Keep up the great work.

I stumbled across pandora after your visit to Portland via the squeezebox site. This is an amazing thing you have set up, I am really impressed so far. Hope you keep up the work! And to all of you "fools" that haven't bought a squeezebox yet, DO IT - worth every penny I paid for it.

Jaycob van Auken's style is incisive and genuine. He is a rock classicist with a singer-songwriter streak. His propensity for blending rock, blues, folk and country allows the thirteen songs on Soundtrak to move in various directions, while keeping the same destination. "The album is widespread," describes Van Auken, "but the connecting element is the songwriting". Broken down to their essentials, the hooky rock/pop of "High Aspirations," the hard southern rhythm of "Prison Bars," and the wiry crunch of '70's rock on "Fullertown" tell tales of diversity and commonalities as Van Auken adroitly writes his own story, as well as the stories of others.

As you have recently been to Portland, you probably won't be back right away. But you can, as I have, "discover" lots of good local music on Oregon Public Broadcasting's "Oregon Art Beat" TV show, and on their website.

I absolutely love this site! I have found a favorite after years of looking for good internet music programing (my Alm Mater's WUVT where I was a Jazz DJ in the mid-90's will remain my number one). The interface is simple and easy (although I would love to be able to advance and rewind tracks and go off on individual band tangents (is there an opportunity to have "tagent stations"?). I come away from a session with your site wanting piles of albums/CDs. It has turned me on to tons of stuff I always knew I wanted but didn't know existed. I hope you guys really research and aquire new music based on user's unavailable requests and this site just gets bigger and better, as your Flash piece indicates. Please get bigger and better!! I have suggested your site to countless people over the past few days, since discovering your cube. A big hit all around.

Here are some great oregon underground bands.
1. The Vam Commanders-Ashland, Or.they broke up in 2002 but they rock the house for some gangskapunkmetalpolkafunk!
2. Cark!-Portland, Or.The guitar player and the drummer from the Vam Commanders are in this band currently. They call their genre "Cark". It's confusion rock at its finest.
3. The Fifth Business-Ashland, Or. another great ska band from ashland. but its hard to find their CD.
4. Sideshow Bob-Ashland, Or. Psycodelic metal. sounds like neurosis. Killer band.

Check out this guy. He played at Ash St and Dante's this summer. David Lunday is the most talented artist to come along in a long while. He has recorded one full album and is working on his second, Lady Industry. You can hear some cuts at DavidLunday.com He is still unsigned, but if you can help him with some contacts, that would be great. He wrote all the songs, played all the instruments and sang, but his lightening quick guitar playing is what wowed the crowd at Dante's and Ash St.

Check out this sweetly original rock band in Portland! These guys have something going on that nees to be told.

Also: Here is a playlist maker that allows up to 6 songs of your favorite music to share
with your friends on a page such as Myspace.

You can see my Hotlist playlist in my Interests section on my page: http://www.myspace.com/58338714

At the bottom of it is a
mouse over where you can copy my code or go to HotList and create a free account and then you
can have your own 6-song playlist.

One of my newly favorite bands on my playlist is TV on the Radio. They are sexy sweet.

Don't know when you might be back in the Northwest, but you should check out Eugene when you are here. We moved here a couple of years ago, and I can't believe the local music scene. It's not that big a city but there are more clubs than you can shake a stick at, Joe Federigo's, the WOW Hall, etc. etc. Lots of visiting groups, but a bunch of local talent too.

I would love for y'all to stop by Savannah, GA! We have a great folk music society, plus several universities and colleges, not to mention the Savannah Folk Music Festival, which occurs in October each year, and the Savannah Music Festival, offering a much wider variety of artists and venues. Come on DOWN!!

Stephanie Schneiderman and Courtney Jones are both great. I look forward to you coming back to Portland now that I've discovered Pandora through "Stumble!" It would be great to add our own songs to our stations thought to "help" the computer get a better idea of what we are looking for.

Come on down to Eugene, Oregon and check out our music scene. Lots of great bands and singer/songwriters in the area covering all genres.

Hi Tim,

I've been busy and unable to check out the places you've traveled. And, you were in my town, Portland, this past summer.

I have tried on my blog to present salsa and cuban music in one mix and as purely Flamenco as I can on a different mix. I've found a few CD's and groups related to the Flamenco. But, your offerings are limited. I have looked up your genre lists. No mention of Flamenco.

I have to say there's only a small group of us interested in this southern Spanish gypsy music here in Portland. There's singers, dancers, mucisions, and pretty soon, we hope to have some kind of presence on a radio, or streaming station.

I've noticed you aren't available outside of the U.S. Plus, you don't have any international offerings, except to the south of us. I'd like more genre offerings in European...Flamenco,...but also french, middle eastern, greek, japanese, chinese, indian, and african, all of which have exciting musicians and music forms.

Please , please, please, go there and bring us back some stuff from those places for us here in Portland.
