I'm still planning my itinerary for Georgia. I know Athens is a can't-miss and Atlanta is of course a music mecca. Please leave any comments or suggestions below.

Some suggestions, many already stated by others:
The Caledonia- good place to see underground, interesting, indie, or just plain weird bands. Highly recommended. Listed in Spin or Rolling Stone last year as the cool club to go to in Athens.
40 Watt- Larger, more popular, more mainstream indie and weird bands. The difference between the Caledonia and 40 Watt (beyond space, variety, and notoriety) is that you will likely have heard of the bands playing at the 40 Watt.
Georgia Theater- Like the 40 Watt in that the bands are possibly known to you, but not nec. Also, more likely to have jam bands or more mainstream like performances.
Tasty World- In size, between 40 Watt and Caledonia. Often has more punk and post-punk bands. Most likely you won't have heard of the bands there.
Some bands- hopeforagoldensummer, Elf Power (between mainstream and indie), Ceramic Duck (experimental noise, but still structured into songs, Squat (jazz), Of Montreal (weird pop music, don't play all that often tho)

Here are my suggestions for when you stop in Atlanta:
Smith's Old Bar - focuses on local and independent rock bands
Eddie's Attic - focuses on local and independent acoustic artists
Lenny's - anything and everything, but the artists are usually VERY unknown.
EyeDrum - music that pushes boundaries. alot.
1150 - well known techno djs come through pretty regularly. i'm not sure how much they showcase newcomers though.
Sorry i dont know much about the R&B/Rap scene here.

Yeah, make sure to hit up Smith's Old Bar in Atlanta, as well as Eddie's Attic.
Definately try to listen to Justin Rosolino while you're down there; you won't regret it.

Thanks all of you. Some great suggestions - wish I was a staying a month! Any suggestions for great indie record stores?

There is a GREAT record store in Atlanta, I can't remeber the name but it is one block from the intersection on Virginia Ave. and N. Highland Ave. which is near midtown. check it out!

Blind Willies is a good blues club. It is on N. Highland in Atlanta.
Francine Reed is a local blues singer.
Variety Playhouse books acts from all over. Might be a chance to catch someone you missed at home. www.variety-playhouse.com

Ahhh Athens, you can't throw a guitar pick in that town without hitting a musician. Check out SchoolKids Records and Wuxtry to buy music alongside the hipsters and the music snobs. Also, for good hip-hop, check out acts like Ishues and Herb n' Skillz for independant, politically charged rhymes that are heads above the crap you hear on the radio, Most importantly, check out The Flagpole for local music reviews and articles. Otherwise, you risk missing some real gems on your way through. If you manage to postpone your trip until June, you'll be delighted by AthFest, a local music festival.
Posted by: Breana at March 28, 2006 10:04 AM
Tim,
Looking for indie record stores? Check out the following:
Wuxtry (Athens)
Schoolkids Records (Athens)
Criminal Records (Atlanta)
Decatur CD (Atlanta/Decatur)
Wax N Facts (Atlanta)
Most of these are also a good source for vinyl.
Posted by: Lars at March 28, 2006 11:36 AM
Excellent. Will definitel hit some of those stores - usually I'll ask the store clerks to each pick out their 5 favorite, most obscure local acts and buy them. Great way to find the hidden gems.
I'll also pick up the Flagpole - thanks, Breana.
Posted by: Tim Westergren at March 28, 2006 02:07 PM
Tim,
There is alot going on in the ATL but you gotta dig a little bit. Along worth the well known spots (The Wuxtry, Criminal, and Wax and Facts). You gotta check out Darryl at The Bazaar in Little Five Points. He specializes in international dance music, house music, the correct hip hop and all things soulful. Check him out at moodsmusic.net.
Peace,
Kevin Latham
(dj kinetiq)
PS - While you're at Moods Music pick up a Afromentals mixtape by DJ Jamad. Atlanta's most soulful, progressive and forward thinking DJ. All of his mizes are absolute Gems. Also check out the Red Clay Experiment series. All of this stuff is great.

At some point travelling through the South, you might run across the new configuration of Blueground Undergrass. Check 'em out...they're smokin' and well worth it wherever the venue, usually Smith's or Variety Playhouse in Atlanta.

Kevin = I'm all about digging! thanks. What's the URL for the straight dope message board, Bill?
Posted by: Tim Westergren at March 29, 2006 08:23 PM
In Atlanta/Athens check to see if The Whigs are performing anywhere. They are also touring around the Southeast with limited forays into nyc area, and played at SXSW for the second year. They've been written up in Fader and Rolling Stone, so you may know about them already if you've been researching. But I've seen them twice in NY and recommend them.
Posted by: Frank at March 30, 2006 07:16 AM
I am currently playing in the band Poolstick, a local Atlanta and that has been playing around the southeast. Depending on when your intown, try and catch one of our shows in in Atlanta, Athens or elsewhere if your near by. www.poolstickmusic.com or www.myspace.com/poolstick
Thanks for your interest in new music!

I did a bit of digging - the Straight Dope message board and the specific thread referenced is here: http://tinyurl.com/gx3mb
I agree with checking out Eyedrum and Tasty World, and the record store suggestions (particularly the Wuxtry, Criminal, and Wax 'n Facts) are solid. I might also recommend, though, maybe talking to one of our local college stations -- Album 88 (wras.org) has an enormous transmitter and is pretty well run for being a university's training program. It's volunteer-run, so it may take a bit of time to talk to someone who *really* knows what's up, but I'm positive they'd appreciate calls or questions (particularly after 5pm on weekdays, and all the time on weekends, when there are specialty shows -- you'll get a DJ who's *really* into their genre and can probably make fantastic recommendations) from you if you explain the program to them.
Good luck on the trip!

At the moment I am in a band called Founders Hill, we are originally from Florida, but were going to be playing around Atlanta this summer. We have kind of a Classic Rock/Pop Punk sound. Well you can check us out at Myspace.com/Foundershill. Thanks.
Posted by: Dain at April 1, 2006 08:42 AM
When you come to Atlanta be sure to go down to Little Five Points and go to Wax n Facts, Criminal Records, and be sure to also visit The Somber Reptile. All three are a necessary stop! Have fun when you roll through the ATL!

Hi Tim,
check out my friend Misha Stefanuk, a wonderful pianist + composer who lives in Atlanta. He's written music for Film and TV, and has written numerous bestselling books about Jazz Piano.

I would second the Whigs recommendation. Great Athens Band, great sound :)
Posted by: Hunter Chorey at April 4, 2006 02:21 PM
How come this is all gray and unreadable? And what's the matter with Savannah? You would come all this way and not come to Savannah?
Posted by: Susan Stephens at April 4, 2006 08:04 PM
Check out Eyedrum when you're visiting Atlanta. It's an alternative art/music/film space near Cabbagetown (one of Atlanta's neighborhoods). They frequently book bands/musicians that employ improvisation or make use of unusual instrumentation:
http://www.eyedrum.org/
As for the record store mentioned by Tim (near Virginia and Highland), they unfortunately closed shop several months ago. But definitely stop by Criminal Records in Little 5 Points. Other indie shops include: Wuxtry in Decatur, and Ella Guru in Toco Hills. Tower Records in Buckhead (Piedmont/Peachtree) usually carries a number of independent releases as well.
For music venues, check out Churchill Grounds for jazz (Midtown/North Ave.), Red Light Cafe (Piedmont Park area) for bluegrass/folk, Eddie's Attic for acoustic (Decatur), Smith's Olde Bar (Ansley) and Variety Playhouse (Little 5 Points) for rock. There's 10 High, underneath the Darkhorse Tavern (Virginia Highlands). Definitely check out The Earl in East Atlanta.
Posted by: Garrin at April 5, 2006 06:15 AM
If you're looking for something a little different there's a venue called "Everett Brothers" up in Suwanee, about a 30 minute ride from downtown. Easily the best Bluegrass you'll find. Open only Saturday nights, all local acts with an ocassional stop from a bigger name coming through town. Truly an experience.
The blues scene in town is great - anyone on Fat Matts BBQ's calendar will be worth listening to, though I recommend Mike Lowry and JT Speed both. The Atlanta Blues Society has a calendar online (http://www.atlantabluessociety.com/calendar/cal.htm) with lots of other good acts.
For something a little funky, Jake's Toadhouse in Decatur is also worth a stop. Good jam music.
Posted by: Cole at April 5, 2006 12:30 PM
wow. My head is going to explode. Great stuff everyone - i'm going to see about timing it so I can hit Suwanee on Saturday - that sounds rockin' (thanks Cole). Sounds like there's definitely some consensus on the clubs. Definitely most interested in the local sound, and the obscure local sound at that. Bummer to hear about another record store going under - it's an epidemic. No town being ruled, don't worry Susan . . making it up as we go.
Posted by: Tim Westergren at April 5, 2006 05:38 PM
Hey I just thought i might help your musical journey through Ga. Since no one have said anything about Augusta, i think i should say something. We hava alot of local talent that plays though out the local clubs and resturant. You can find some downtown at places like Lokal Loudness, first friday, the wild wing cafe and other places. I also want to put a plug in for a very good local band called The Edison Project is you get a chance to hear them you won't regret it. Well I hope this helps. ~Alicia

Since you're going to be in Georgia I was going to suggest that you stop at Montgomery, Alabama at around 8:00 P.M central time on April 23rd at Off The Wagon where a band called "Mute Math" will be playing. I'm only suggesting this to you because its only 2.5 hrs from Atlanta and shouldn't be too hard to find using Google Maps. However, if you can't just check out the band's webpage on http://www.myspace.com/mutemath

Don't miss Matthew Kahler or the Damn Millionaires http://www.damnmillionaires.com. The DMs are best explored online, since I don't think they're performing right now, although they are an ATL band.

If you feel like swinging threw Augusta we have a pretty good indie & hardcore/punk scene. Some good spots to try and check bands out are:
-Soul Bar
-Sector 7G
-The Mission
Those would probably be the best places to stop by or Stillwater Tap Room has bluegrass groups come threw on the weekends. One love!
Posted by: Carl at April 21, 2006 01:05 PM
Most of the good music spots have been recommended to you. Eddie's Attic, Star Bar, The Earl, Smith's Olde Bar, Fat Matt's, etc. Check out the Clairmont Lounge if you get a chance- it's a slice o' life for sure! There also used to be a good Blues/R&B down off Northside Ave near GA tech.
Posted by: Pat at April 21, 2006 01:08 PM
Wuxtry's is the "can't remember the name" record store on the corner of N. Decatur & Clairmont -- and yes, it's easily one of the best IMO, both in terms of music and atmosphere.
Saw the mention of WRAS radio (88.5 FM) -- great well-run station. Along the same lines, if you're looking for "different" music, be sure to tune in to WREK 91.1 FM. Also run by students (Georgia Tech), its FCC mandate is to play predominantly music that isn't being played on popular stations ...so by definition you'll hear "different" music. Check em online at http://wrek.org
Regarding previous comments: definitely hit The Earl (Atlanta), Fat Matt's (Atlanta), and Tasty World (Athens). Enjoy your travels :)

Tim, try the One Star Ranch BBQ joint on Highway 9 in Alpharetta on a Saturday night. They have local bands then that play blues, folksy rock and southern rock. Small venue, small bands, laid back. Oh, and longnecks and good Georgia BBQ of course.

Posted by: rowland at April 27, 2006 05:01 PM
I agree with Variety Playhouse, Eardrum, Redlight Cafe, and Drunken Unicorn. They're great places.
Decatur CD is by far the best indie music store in Atlanta. The owner, Warren, is so helpful and awesome. And they're really into americana/bluegrass/folk in addition to just indie rock.
And PASTE magazine is also based in Decatur!
Couple of great local acts to check out: Luigi, Grayson Manor, Doria Roberts, and Liz Durrett

Check out some of my stuff, if you'd like. (Hey, I'm not above shameless self promotion) I have a few songs on my site and am currently recording a new CD. I'll send you a copy when It's finished. If someone digs Petty, Billy Pilgrim, Toad the Wet Sprocket, they should like my stuff. Kind of granola meets southern rock. Other than that, I think that most of the must see spots have already been covered. Thanks again for the great music!

As an Athens native, it looks like most of the hip scenes have been covered. However, not enough mention has been given to the Melting Point. This is a new venue that's getting popular very quickly. Despite being located on the same property as the Fountain Inn, it's a pretty heady scene with a lot of good music. Very intimate environment. Think Playhouse in Atlanta. I'd say it's as important as hitting up the Theatre and 40 Watt except you're going to find lesser known artists, but usually with more talent than what's to be heard at Caledonia. It's a gold mine for budding artists.
Posted by: copeland at April 30, 2006 02:12 PM
I think that East Atlanta is HIGHLY underrated as far as music is concerned. Athens is not the only place to see.
Check out the EARL, Lenny's, The Drunken Unicorn... Variety Playhouse.
Definately go to Dunch (Sunday brunch) at the EARL, there is always a good local band there too.

hi there,
you've already got like a kazillion recommendations on the hotness in atl. however....it just wouldn't be right if you didn't check out some of the spots that breed artists like india.arie, van hunt, dionne farris, and all those vibes; spots that give you the whole neosoul (ugh, i hate that label), electronica, downtempo, hip hop, punk and all that other genre-defying audio.
For that vibe, you wanna, at the very least, hit up the following:
www.apachecafe.info (live music spot/club)
www.earwaxrecords.com (THE mom & pop recastoh, quest from the roots makes it a point to come whenever they're in town.
www.mjqatlanta.com (live music spot/club)
www.thedrunkenunicorn.net(live music spot/club)
www.eastsidelounge.net (live music spot/club)
that's my 10 cents. whatever you do....dude, have a good time. one.

A good place for folk/country and indie country (?) is a restaurant called "Swallow in the Hollow". They've had some big name songwriters come in and perform their own songs and also are the venue for the Georgia Songwriter's Association. The restaurant is in downtown Roswell, about 20 miles north of Atlanta. Great "que" too.

Wasup,
I am feeling pandora and loving the idea of ya'll coming down to atlanta to get some new hot music. Without a doubt, like some other people said, check out moods music and definantly cop some DJ Jamad afromentals. But on the dirty south music side i haven't really heard any interest in that, but our hip-hop scene is HUGE! First, listen to the atlanta/metro radio stations like V103-103.3 and Hot107.9. Uhm, also, for the hottest ne hip-hop and R&B, listen to Dj Drama, and Dj Dramatic.

Why dont you have a genre of Indian music - which could be 'film' or non-film such as classical, pop etc.

While Atlanta and Athens are all well and good don't forget the root towns (towns where it all started) like Macon the home of The Georgia Music Hall of Fame, which features both unknown artist as well as very popular in their Live @ Five shows (I saw Chick Willis there once. There is also The Big House where the Allman Brothers Band lived now a house/museum sort of the mecca for all jam/southern bands and H&H resturant this is where the cook for the Allman Brothers Band still works (as far as I know) that went with them on all tours and cooked for them.
So come down further south to get that ABB soul food and of course you know there are only two types of music The Allman Brother Band...and then everything else!

Hi,
I'd suggest the following in Athens:
283 Bar at 283 Broad Street(my sister-in-law owns it). Ask for Lori or my brother Dan, they may be there. Tell them you wrote some amazing software that earned you a PBR on me (Tim).
Dynamite Clothing for gifts and funky clothes after a coffee at the ERC (both next door to 283)
Lunch at 5 Star Day on Broad up the block from 283
Walk through Cobbham Historic District and gawk at the amazing houses (10 minutes from downtown walk, south of Prince ave).
Walk through Boulevard Historic District and stop at Rooster's BBQ on Boulevard for some lunch (10 minutes walk from downtown, north of Prince ave).
Drive out to the Broad River with some friends and dogs and swim.
Go to the Grit for some vegetarian food that is deliciouly laden with butter and bad-for-you stuff.
It's hard to get a flavor for Athens without some time spent on a porch wasting time. Hopefully your hosts will be able to help you out.
Go see some music at Caledonia (in the old 40 Watt location).

You've gotten a lot of suggestions for the trendy stuff in Athens (and a lot of it is good), but for something different check out Mark Maxwell's music. You can probably get his CD's at Wuxtry or the other local shops, and he has a website at FIRSTTUNE.COM. He's a classical/jazz guitarist whose range spans "From Be-bop to Bach" to quote a headline on a local news story about his music.

If you have time, I recommend for anyone to check out Nuci's Space in Athens. It's a sweet place if you're away from your musical comforts of home. They have cheap jam spaces with more equipment than you'd think. The downtown scene in Athens is great in the summer... No Students! Well... there's some, but it's not as big a drunken-orgy as usual. Stick to the outskirts of downtown. Every bar in the middle of downtown is exactly the same as the next. It get boring and repetative VERY FAST. 40 Watt, Georgia Theatre, Caledonia, and even DT's Downunder is good on occasion. Hope this helps.
Cheers

So many music places and not many food places mentioned for Athens. You can't go to Athens with out eating some FANTASTIC southern food. Get the cheese fries when you're at the Blind Pig. Five Star Day Cafe is a must for lunch or Sunday Brunch. The Last Resort has the best Salmon and Grits ever! The Varsity for a Chili Cheese-dog with slaw and fried peach pie. Ride by and check out the 'tree that owns itself" http://www.athensclarkecounty.com/tour/tour10.htmIt's a great weekend to be in Athens. Finals are just now over the students will be partying like it's 1999. ENJOY!!

Frankly, I'm blown away that no one has mentioned PGroove yet. PGroove = Perpetual Groove. These guys have some amazing originals and do righteous covers every now and again. They just moved from Savannah to Athens, but play in Atlanta regularly as well. Check them out at pgroove.com. For a good taste, check out their song "Three Weeks".

It's a mailorder place, but he keeps hours out of the warehouse, which is just barely on the wrong side of I-20. (You'll probably have to email him for directions.)
I picked up a CD in the place at random (you don't listen to anything there, you either know what you're getting or you take your chances) and as I was checking out, Gavin (the proprietor) looked at me knowingly and said, "oh, Uruguayan death metal." Which is exactly what it was, turns out.
Also tons of zines and videos. The website gives you a feel for the inventory. Actually shopping there is quite the experience, however.
Also, visit the record store by the 40-Watt in Athens, which is called Low Yo Yo Stuff. (Yup, like the Captain Beefheart song.) It's nice to find a record store that's open at 2 in the morning.

Check out Luigi - they are the hottest band in Atlanta. Home is the Earl. Website is http://www.luigitheband.com/

I've got to second and third the suggestions for Augusta. Soul Bar, Sector -- all of those places are pretty cool, and First Friday is a good idea for a stop. (The town's pretty nice in early summer, too.)
Happy trails.

Too bad your not in town this weekend one of the great musical events of the year is happening this weekend: Bubbapalooza at The Star Bar in Little five points. Three days of low rent rock at its best! Regardless check out the Star Bar when your in town, its a great venue. Also dont miss The Earl,in East Atlanta. They dont play much but there is a great local band called Luigi that is always a lot of fun.

Please do not omit the music of the 40's, 50's, and 60's.

No music comments, but a website comment: streaming lyrics for the current song playing (if possible) would be really cool!
Posted by: Kristy at June 9, 2006 10:42 AM
The Vinyl and the Loft (they're next door) are two great venues. Then, of course, there's the 40 Watt in Athens and Eddie's Attic and the Earl in Atlanta. Decatur is a great place for music (that's where Eddie's Attic is) and you can stop by Java Monkey for poetry slams.
If they're playing, don't miss YOU.

If you wanna see some up-and-coming city sites, you gotta check out Atlantic Station. Yeah, everybody talks about it but it really is a cool place.
During the summer, a local radio station is sponsoring weekly, free, acoustic concerts in the park. I forget which one at the moment, but I doubt I'm the only one that knows about it.
The concerts are every sunday, but throughout the week the parks are where all the action goes down during the day.

A really great Athens band worth seeing is Venice is Sinking. Also, the Whigs. And in Atlanta, best clubs for indie rock are the Earl, Drunken Unicorn, 10 High and Smith's Olde Bar, except Smith's tends to do jam bands and southern rock - the songwriter nights sometimes have some intersesting artists who jump on stage on non-weekend nights.

Why there isn't any music by "Dancing Fantasy" on Pandora? "Dancing Fantasy" have awesome music! Can they be added? They are very well known with over 15 CD's to claim.
By the way, please do not add R&B to this wonderful web-site of beautiful "Jazz" there is a time and place for everything. I love R&B and I am a beautiful black vixen, but I love the Jazz that Pandora plays.
Thanks

There are too many blogs to check if this suggestion has already been made, but Earthlink Live venue (now renamed Center Stage) in midtown Atlanta caters to many different genres of artists, small and large. I recently saw Second Shift, aparently an Athens based band and they were fierce. Great energy and the singer has a curiously quirky stage presence. Defintiely look into both.

Check out the Rogue Independent Music Festival in downtown Atlanta, Friday and Saturday July 7-8, 2006 for something really different!

I'd like to reiterate the suggestion of Hope for Agoldensummer. They are a fabulously talented group. Also, check out The Ginger Envelope (soooo good!) and the Modern Skirts in Athens, GA.

Oh! And I almost forgot - I second the remark that you should check out Venice is Sinking... beautiful.

Rich Millett (www.richmillett.com)
If you need recordings I can hook you up (I was the bassist in both bands and can probably get you legal use - pending your request).

Hey Tim - just wondering if your Athens visit is ever going to be blogified. WUOG could use some of that reflected Pandora glory! I actually do a music-related talk show now (Liner Notes), and if you'd ever have a chance to do another interview over the phone since we couldn't record the last one, that'd be great.

Comments here are terrific. I grew up in Atlanta and was a Georgia State DJ. An eatery NOT to be missed EVER is Taco Mac. Est. around late 1970's in Little Five Points. There are two now (I believe), but the one in Little Five Points is the original. They serve buffalo wings with the original recipe (THE original - before anyone knew what buffalo wings were outside of Buffalo, NY) and more kinds of beer (about 250 last time I visited) than any eatery in the Southeast. Didn't read all the posts, or know whether you're done with Atlanta, but don't forget this place. Mellow Mushroom is an old time fav, btw. I lived right around the corner in Buckhead. O the memories! ;-)

You guys I love you radio station. I actually work at the radio station for the University of Georgia. Our philospohy at the radio station is to play music that is not mainstream to get the population interested in local artist or ones not mainstream.
