Update: It looks like I'll be stopping by the Phoenix area to host a town hall meet on November 13th, on the ASU campus. All the details below. Looking forward to visiting!
WHAT: Pandora Town Hall
WHERE: ASU Lyceum Theater, 901 South Forest Mall, Tempe AZ
Directions
WHEN: November 13th, 2006 @ 7PM
RSVP by sending an email to tour@pandora.com with "ASU" in the subject line!
I'm currently planning an itinerary for my tour stop in Arizona. Come mid-November, I'll be stopping in Phoenix for a town hall meeting, and would love the opportunity to meet Pandora student listeners at nearby schools like Arizona State University. Also looking at getting out to Tucson if time permits. If you have any suggestions for appropriate venues on the college campus, whether at a music class or in the student union, don't hesitate to leave a comment below. We want to get you involved!
We love reading and responding to your feedback on the blog - the comments have been a treasure trove of great insights and guidance as we plan our visits. If you have a particular idea you want to discuss, or just want to get more involved, we're eager for help - just drop us an email at tour@pandora.com. Please include your location in the subject line of your message too. No idea is too big or small!

Arizona State University would probably be the preferable venue to take a stop at. Without knowing the tour dates, there may be a better location for a specific date, but ASU is a good bet. There is a strong school of music at ASU, and the memorial union, or even directly outside between the MU and the school of music, would also be a good location during the week. The event coordinator at ASU could probably provide more details and scheduling, but I think that a table or booth with Pandora promotional materials on the ASU campus would draw both current listeners and people who have not heard of the project. There is a decent music store in the MU called Hoodlums which would probably be happy to provide whatever support they can.

You should try to make time to stop in Flagstaff, AZ. NAU has lots going on in early November and if the school doesn't have something there is always downtown (a 10 minute walk from NAU). Definatly worth checking out.

I currently live in Lake Havasu City, Arizona so i dont know about ASU and all that but we do have a local band here in havasu called The Easykill. They are really awesome and get all the teenagers in havasu in the music mood! They do travel so if you have time then get ahold of them this is their website: http://www.myspace.com/theeasykill ... hope this helps! PANDORA ROX MY SOX!!! ~skye~

I agree with Steve, although ASU is a larger universtiy, NAU gives the true hometown feel. November would be a good time to visit NAU. Since
I start my first semester there, I would definetly
check out your booth. PANDORA leaves other "Internet Radio's" eating their dry, unorganized, redundant playlists. Thanks!

I think you guys are doing great! for me is awesome to listen music I thaught was imposible to find, in a era of hip-hop and rap I'm fascinated to listen music from past years.
Don't forget the spanish and mexican singer from the 60's and 70 as long as the latino musician from that era, I'm 48 and there are many like me that don't forget the good 70's, thanks a million, by the way greettings from, Tucson, Az.

Hi,
I am writing you from the Phoenix area. If you are interested in the student scene I think you should try to visit Tucson and Flagstaff while you are here as they are more college dominant towns.
I am a little too old to be considered a student listener so I can't help with an ASU venue recommendation, but here is a list of local music:
http://www.theedge1039.com/localfrequency2005_bands.php
The ones on the page that I have seen and can recommend trying to see are Authority Zero and Downward Dog.
I really feel that Pandora is a great service. I like the variety Pandora provides. I do wish that you would consider adding some Zydeco music. I read your posts from Louisiana and was intrigued that you enjoyed the funk band, but don't play it's cousin, Zydeco! You missed an opportunity by not stopping in Lafayette.
Hope you enjoy your visit to the desert.

Yes, please visit Tucson. This is wonderful, thank you! Check out the new 104.1 while you're here!

A friend just told me about Pandora and I already love it! I have been telling everyone I know about it. I live down in Tucson and we would love to have you. I am sure University of Arizona could hook you up. Something this great seems too good to be free... is there any danger of Pandora being forced to charge?
Posted by: Summer at August 30, 2006 04:38 PM
I am syked you're coming to phoenix! i love pandora and the entire concept, it's brilliant! I have to agree with Kelly above, I am not of the "student" age or sceen so i don't know about ASU. I also listen to 103.9 the edge local frequency and I have seen Authority Zero play many times and they ROCK!There is another band i have seen, although not sure if they are still together, Gloritone, also have gone by Massive Stars. The singer has an amazing voice.
I look forward to the town meeting :)

I love the music showcased on pandora and I think it's a great way new music can be explored. The engine that sorts preferences is fantastic and I hear music I want to buy! So, Pandora is great!
I recently returned to Tucson from Seattle and found that the University of Arizona campus has undergone a great deal of renovation since I graduated her in '96. I highly recommend the space adjacent to the bookstore and the foodcourt area as a prime space to get the attention of music loving undergrads. Other alternatives are on the mall where there is an outside speakers podium. Underground there is a music venue for a cozier show. Good luck in the adventures and keep the music rolling!

I am not a student but I love the way your site finds new Jazz music and performers for me. I live in Prescott, AZ. It is a smaller city about 100 miles north of and approximately 4000 feet higher than Phoenix. Our weather is much more pleasant than Phoenix's in the summer and we have a Junior College(Yavapai County Community College) which has an excellent music program and beautiful performance hall. We have a large number of retired professional musicians and a branch of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and Prescott College. I would love to have you visit here.

Thank you for answering my last e-mail regarding classical music. Another request which may facilitate reaching out to your programs: How can I add a desk-top icon for pandora? Thanks, ted

I am currently a student and the UofA and it would be awesome if you could stop here as well. There are many musical classes at the UA, and also places in town where band play. Ill keep in touch to see what happenin.
Keep up the music!!!!!!!!

Tempe is definitely your best bet... Setting up outside Memorial Union (on ASU's main campus) is perfect. I'll be there for SURE!

Pandora’s music selection is as tremendous as your site format is comfortable. My hat is off to the genius behind its creation and direction.
I enjoy oldies as much as progressive, especially the Nu-jazz characterized by irrational rhythm and newer complex measures, especially additives and phasing.
I was especially surprised to see that some noted author has recently published a book about his philosophic approach to life based on some of concepts of music theory. He has based his theories on the recognized importance of an irrelevant rhythm in highlighting the rapid pitch changes of a song.
The book = Rhythm and Self consciousness: New Ideals for an Electronic Civilization. I haven’t read it yet, but hope to.
Thanks for providing the community such a fine musical outlet.

Hi, I was recently introduced to Pandora and have been enjoying it immensely. I live in Tucson and suggest that you check out a local artist named Eric Hansen. He is a singer/songwriter. He plays guitar and sings very heart warming material that I'm not sure I know how to categorize. Another local artist is guitar player Ismael Barajas who plays music written by others with a Latin theme. Hear's Music, a local Music Store on Campbell Ave. not far from the University of Arizona campus could hook you up with lots of local artists. Thanks for your great service!
Posted by: Patricia at September 11, 2006 09:01 AM
Agree with some above - ASU is the place. Totally "wired" campus, including widespread Wifi. If you set up a table out in front of the Memorial Union, you can have laptops sampling Pandora for students to check out. I am a graduate student and listen to Pandora on campus all the time.
Posted by: Adam at September 14, 2006 02:08 PM
If you are coming to the Phoenix area, definitely come to ASU. I'm not a student, but I have a good knowledge of venues around town and on campus. The big question is what size of venue are you looking for, how many people have you been drawing at each event. If you are talking 50 people there is an excellent spot right near Hoodlums, but if you are talking 300 people you are going to want to go somewhere else.
I've been a Pandora user for around 9-10 months now and have turned many people on to it. I've e-mailed in suggestions and gotten favorable feedback. I'm 36 and not a student, but I'd LOVE to particpate in a Pandora Town Hall meeting.
My current musical preferences lean towards Arcade Fire, Snow Patrol, We Are Scientists, Elefant, Mountain Goats, The Metric, Rahim, Sufjan Stevens, Death Cab for Cutie... to name a few. All time favorites are James, Pixies, Radiohead, Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, Skinny Puppy, Poster Children, Fugazi, Jawbox, Front 242, Frontline Assembly, Pop Will Eat Itself, Neds Atomic Dustbin, Oingo Boingo, Publiuc Enemy, Tribe Called Quest, Prodigy, Tool, Failure.
I have one station for everything, I like as much variety as possible. I want to hear The Faint next to Ride followed by De La Soul. My biggest complaints are that sometimes Pandora will deliver a mellow set and I'm in an upbeat mood or vice versa. I'd also like to see more voting options. I'd like to specify if I'm voting for the artist or the song, even my favorite bands have a lemon every now and then, but if I vote against the lemon, I'm voting against the band in general and I don't want to hear the whole band less or have then banned, I just don't want to hear that song. On the flipside there are a handful of Dave Matthews songs I love, but its love/hate, I don't want to vote for one of his songs because I might start getting the songs I don't like, which is the majority of them. I also don't like the thumbs up/thumbs down, don't want it getting too complicated, but I'd like to specify between like and love, and not my favorite and can't stand.
I also want to know whats on the technology front. With wide area wi-fi popping up in many cities around the country and hotspots all over the place, is there a chance there will be a portable player where I could actually listen to Pandora on the go, picking up whatever wi-fi signal it can find???

Hi I just had to tell you how much I LOVE PANDORA.COM. I have it as my HOME PAGE. I log on at WORK and at HOME and everytime I log on to ANY COMPUTER anywhere I am. This is the most incredible, fascinating, wodnerful web site I have ever run across!! Not only is it a great music station, but it's FREE and it LEARNS!(well, you guys learn and then add to the stations). But it's just mind-blowingly WONDERFUL! I have told all my friends about it. That includes Japan, and England and Canada as well as all over the USA. I hope You don't let Pandora go the way of all other webs site, where, when it begins to to become SO popular, the FREE part becomes a PAY part. Please do your best to keep this wonderful MUSIC PROJECT continuing on like it is. The only impovements I could see to it in the future is to add CLASSICAL MUSIC and more asian artists. I search for Classial and Asian Artists and come up with nothing. I have a few, but not even remotely enough. KEEP UP THE FABULOUS WORK and FABULOUS WEB SITE and anything I can do to help, feel free to let me know! I mean it. There is NOTHING like PANDORA.COM I LOVE YOU GUYS!

I'm a doctoral student at ASU and just discovered pandora this morning! I'd absolutely knocked out (that would be an understatement). Remember there are older students who are still young at heart .. I'm 49 .. and have accumulated many more years of diverse listening. Would love to see you on ASU campus in Tempe. Safe travels ...

There is a music club in Phoenix called The Rythm Room which is a must if you come to Phoenix and you love Blues music. Give it a try! BTW, Pandora is very, very cool.

Pandora is awesome! It has helped me discover artists I haven't heard of before, thank you.
A local band in Phoenix, AZ I would love to hear on Pandora is "Knotty Pine". http://www.myspace.com/knottypine

I got reffered to Pandora a few days ago, and i must say you guys rock. If your going to be in Phoenix, Arizona Do you think it would be possible to stop by DeVry University? Because as an out of state student , I dont have a way to get out to ASU. Well, anyways keep doing what your doing. It's awesome!
Posted by: Alex at October 4, 2006 07:07 PM
Definitely hit the Phoenix area, the weather will be perfect in November for some kind of outdoor event. If you choose Tempe there are tons of bars on Mill Ave, I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem getting one of them to let you set up shop on a patio or something. Pandora rocks, I can't believe something like this can kick so much ass and not be shut down by the money-grubbing record studios. Although, now that Youtube got bought out are you guys waiting for your big check too? ;)
Posted by: omnixed at October 15, 2006 01:12 AM
My humble suggestion: While visiting ASU and students is a fantastic idea, please note there are plenty of mid- to late-twenty-somethings (and even early-thirty-somethings) who lovelovelove pandora and would show support at an off-campus venue, like The Paper Heart, a chill downtown coffee house/art gallery. I'd like to see Pandora pay its respect to fans like me, the quarter-life (and plus) market who really drives independent music and advancing technology. After all, we're the folks who are going to recognize the worth of pandora and support it in multiple ways - word of mouth, subscriptions, meandering our way to iTunes or eMusic to purchase the songs for our mp3 players. We're the ones begging for T-shirts and a chance to be part of something revoluntary and cutting-edge. Plus, we don't have to cut class to show you around Phoenix!
Posted by: Alicia at October 18, 2006 11:34 AM
I definately agree with Stephanie - The Paper Heart is a great venue that supports a lot of our local music talent (which there is much of!), and a really good way to not only reach those who are not in college, but an entirely different scene and kind of people than you will find in the ASU campus area. Also, if you time, Phoenix Community College has space and interest in having you come by! I would say your best bet there would be to have a promo table in the center of campus where you can poll people and have them check out Pandora on laptops, like someone else mentioned above. There's a good music scene there, and also a much more diversified campus. That said, Pandora is awesome, and your ingenuity is SOO greatly appreciated!
Posted by: Kate at October 20, 2006 09:15 PM
I just discovered Pandora and am VERY impressed! The music is fantastic! I do have one request which by your job postings seems as if you are on the way to addressing it already. I have several children who are addopted from different countries (Russia, Bulgaria, Ethiopia, etc.) It would be great if you could provide some music in their native languages. Thanks and please keep the music coming.
Posted by: Steve at October 20, 2006 10:57 PM
Pandora is awesome!! I can't even begin to find the words to describe how wonderful it is to listen to the music that I want to hear without commerical interuptions. I listen to Pandora all day at work and absolutely love it. Thank you so much for giving an individual the chance to listen to my music. I recommend Pandora to al my family and friends. Keep up the good work.

Even though I am not a student I think that ASU is an excellent location. But being in Mesa, AZ I would tend to prefer MCC. However, regardless of that, I would like to "strongly" suggest you research http://www.radiofreephoenix.com before you get here as that is an excellent source of local music as well as 60's and 70's style free form radio. See you in the future!
Posted by: David Miller at October 29, 2006 08:16 PM
wouldn't it be great if pandora could be listened to through a cell phone via a data connection, web browser that supports the site's programming, and what i think would need to be some highly compressed music files to stream over such slow connections. soon perhaps?
see you at ASU

I agree with the person who said to stop in Flagstaff. I moved from there a few months ago and I miss it a WHOLE lot.
Check out Fight The Quiet [www.myspace.com/fightthequiet], possibly? They're from Flagstaff, as is another band called Caecelia [www.myspace.com/caecelia], who are pretty amazing.

Should be a great evening - If you're a musician, bring your CD. Or if you're a friend of a musician, bring their CD.. I expect to leave town with a bag full of local talent...
See you soon. Tim (Founder)

Hi--I'm out here Back East now, but I grew up in rural northeastern Arizona, and if you only went to Phoenix, you missed a whole bunch of territory full of die-hard, Real Country music fans. There's also a strong rock/metal mix up there, too, the "we know Waylon, we know Van Halen" mix. You might have fun checking out the music sections in the truck stops to see what is for sale to give you an idea of the mix. Snapshot: When I lived up there, I learned about Vern Gosdin and Cinderella in the same week. Enjoy the trip, and remember there's lots more to AZ than Phoenix.

HI, Tucson has a great music scene. I would love it if you would add my music (Kathleen Williamson) to Pandora (I'm a new fan of Pandora!). I have two award winning CDs and have been playing music in AZ since 1975. Let me know how to get that to you.
Tucson also has Calexico, Giant Sand, Lisa Otey, Linda Ronstadt, Carla Brownlee, Danny Krieger, Nancy McCallion, Cathy Rivers, John Coinman, Namoli Brennet, all kinds of great Mariachi Bands, Solace Brothers, Sabra Faulk, Joey Burns, Kevin Pakulis, man the list is awesome. Tucson is a #2 Austin and we're trying harder.
you can also find a "sister station" in www.KXCI.org, our community supported radio station and you can find out more about our local artists there as as well as www.tkma.org, as well as the Tucson Jazz Society, etc.
happy sounds and please let me know how to get my tunes to you. I already have them in mp3 etc formats. kindest regards and good work! Kathleen

I absolutely love this site!!! There is nothing that I would change about it. The background themes are breath-taking everday and there is always something new. I really like how the site has the dynamic "feel" of a Windows and MAC computer. Everything is easy to find and navigation couldn't have been any simpler. I am a student at ASU west in Applied Computing and just want to tell you guys to keep up the good work. I can only dream of creating a template like the one you guys designed. Technological simplicity is, hands down, the future!!! Hopefully I will have the opportunity to work for such a great Co. like Pandora. You are an aspiration to me. -Antonio
