Update: The Philadelphia town hall meeting is confirmed for November 2nd, 2006 at 7pm. It'll be at the Penn Bookstore on the University of Pennsylvania campus. Please RSVP to the event by sending an email to tour@pandora.com with "UPenn" in the subject line.
I'm currently planning an itinerary for my tour stop in Pennsylvania. Come early-November, I'll be stopping in Philadelphia for a town hall meeting (I'll bet the first town hall meeting in America's history was held in this very city!), and would love the opportunity to meet Pandora student listeners at nearby schools like the University of Pennsylvania. If you have any suggestions for appropriate venues on the college campus, whether at a music class or in the student union, don't hesitate to leave a comment below. I can't wait to visit!
We love reading and responding to your feedback on the blog - the comments have been a treasure trove of great insights and guidance as we plan our visits. If you have a particular idea you want to discuss, or just want to get more involved, we're eager for help - just drop us an email at tour@pandora.com. Please include your location in the subject line of your message too. No idea is too big or small!

Every year the Millenium Music Conference is held in and around Harrisburg. Bands from all over the East Coast play in this thing. Different genres abound. Well worth the check out. It would be worth the trip to check it out. It lasts two days.
BTW, Pandora is a Godsend. A million thanks

Not an itinerary suggestion, but a "programming" suggestion from Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh.)
It would be really nice to be able to define the channels by content/genre. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the idea of the selection of songs based on style, etc. of a particular artist, song, or set of either.
But, for example, I love a band named Stavesacre, but I don't like to listen to the black metal/death metal content that is brought up by Stavesacre's style. It would be nice to have a "Christian" station in the style of Stavesacre or a "Classic Country" station in the style of Loretta Lynn.

Do you know about World Cafe Live? (For the Philly Town Meeting) It's adjacent to the Univ of Penn and they have a lot of cool shows as well as conferences. http://worldcafelive.com/ I don't know anything about their fees for holding a town meeting, but I can imagine they would be excited to have an event like that in their space.
Another cool space is the Crane Arts Building, which is a funky commercial/ art studio building in a former industrial district near the Northern Liberties neighborhood. http://www.cranearts.com/

...think that first town hall was probably Jamestown or Plymouth Plantation...
Thank you for a great site....would love more Christian artists added. Thanks so much!

It would be great if you guys could make it to Pittsburgh when you get to Pennsylvania. Lots of great music on this side of the state. I've personally been spreading the Pandora word!

Can't wait to hear where, in Philadephia, you'll be stopping. Today is actually my first time using Pandora and I predict a long term relationship ahead.

I live up in NE Philly. I think it's awesome you're doin' this, I'll keep an eye on the calendar. I love this site, it's really somethin' different and special. If I continue using it and you guys keep doin' what you're doin, I'm definitely considering purchasing the service. Screw those Pittsburg guys, this is the place to be. Don't forget to grab a cheesesteak while you're here.

This is the best thing since sliced bread. I love my stations - hopefully I'll catch you when you come by Philly. You have my full support, I've been telling people.

Sounds like we'd better start planning a Pittsburgh stop too... Any suggestions for venues in the city? We usually get 100-200 people- so we're looking for rooms that can fit that many, but that allow for easy conversation.
Thanks all. Tim (Founder)

I hope you stop in at State College, PA, ie. Penn State University.
It's on the way from Philly to Pittsburgh, if you take the northern route (I80) and it's got LOTS of venues on campus, of nearly any size you could want. I'd love to see you guys.
I'm not a student, but heard about Pandora last year and listen off and on whenever I am somewhere that has an internet connection. I've found fantastic music that I would never have heard before and have added some real eclectic quality to my music collection. I don't know where I would be without you guys!

I justed signed up to Pandora yesterday and have listend to several groups i have never heard of, Very Cool. I run DSL at about 384 but have drops in the audio streaming as well as soemtimes total stopages that end my session until i hit another one of my stations. Though you might know why. I also wanted to let you know that in the past 36 hours i have unlisted my business partner, my office manger, all 3 of my teenagers,( they really like it) and 2 more of my business friends. I don't know how you have become some popular in "the burgh" but i am also a Pittsburgher and our local music scene has become more and more exciting

I know someone else already stated this, but just wanted to reinerate the venue World Cafe Live for the Philly town meeting. It's close to university city and a intragral part of the U-Penn radio station. I'm a recent grad and everyone I know listens to Pandora at their new jobs. You probally have a very large following here in Philly

How about Reading? We're far from Philly and there are several area colleges here--Albright, Alvernia, Penn State Berks. We have some pretty good musicians and we're currently featuring a few of them on our video blog, www.berks.tv. We will be featuring some more coming up, too.

Hey, I think it would be completely spectacular if you came to the 'burgh. Pittsburgh is swarming with college students as well (University of Pittsburgh, CMU, Robert Morris, Chatam, Carlow, Duquesne... just to name a few.) I'm sure you could get a room in one of the Universities or even in one of the Carnegie buildings located between Pitt and CMU. Hope to see you guys this fall!

World Live would be a great place. It also has a strong relationship with Drexel University (UPenn's neighbor, and MUCH cooler rival). They generally send out announcements on the University mailing list about World Live events. I have connections with many people involved with campus events and communications so if you do stop at World Live please send me an email and I'll make sure the Drexel community knows about it.
Posted by: Nate at August 31, 2006 06:25 PM
You know, also, if you can't get in at World Live, I could also try to get you a space somewhere at Drexel. I'm involved with both the Performing Arts Dept. and IST School.

Since my friends and I have an eclectic taste in music, Pandora is a lifesaver. We're able to further hone our diverse taste...oxymoron, no? Anyhow, can't wait to hear more about your itinerary in Philly. I know tons of my classmates use Pandora. As previously mentioned, World Cafe Live is great for local music. With regards to other things to do while in Philly? Gelato at 13th and Sansom at Capigiro....yummy!

I happened upon you a month or so ago and emailed that we live in Lancaster, PA, a very contemporary religious music area, between Phila. and Harrisburg and growing by leaps and bounds. We are 45 minutes from Harrisburg so would like more details on the Millenium..want to catch that. I like most of what you've done, but like a little more beat, no heavy metal Some artists would be Michael W. Smith. NOT COUNTRY
Keep up the good work..we love it!

Pittsburgh also swarms with "old" people like me who love to explore music. I discovered Pandora last month and enjoying it thoroughly since. I'm drowning a sea (or three rivers) of corporate radio blandness. Internet radio has been a lifepreserver. I concur that the Pitt/CMU area would be a good place for a venue.
Posted by: Mark D at September 5, 2006 07:20 PM
Next year, plan your swing through the region in August, and check out Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA; see http://www.fest.org. Wall to wall music for 10 days on multiple simultaneous stages, ranging from popular artists (you can probably ignore those) to everything from polkas to folk to rock to gospel to... well, you get the idea. Lehigh University, Lafayette College, DeSales University, and Muhlenberg College are all in the vicinity.

I go to school at a small university close to the NY border called Mansfield University in Pennsylvania. I don't think too many people in this area know about this wonderful program. Our school has a top notch music program and I'm sure that something could be arranged here if you were interested in speaking and holding some sort of forum.

Please come to Philadelphia!
I love Pandora, and have gotten everyone at work hooked on it. I know that the UPenn campus has lots of great meeting spaces, but I don't know how one goes about reserving them for a non-university event. The World Cafe would be a logical venue, as many others have noted, and Drexel might also work. I also think that a genre radio station would be awesome, but I'm so happy with Pandora now it might be gilding the lily. Come to Philadelphia and share the music!

It would be terrible if you went across Pennsylvania and didn't stop in Centre County at Penn State! If you're thinking about a visit to Pittsburgh you might consider the Carnegie Music Hall as an appropriate venue. It is located in the heart of the area's educational nexus and is largely under-utilized (IMHO). Here's some contact info for the location. Keep up the good work! Randy B - Monroeville, PA

My son introduced Pandora to me. Great concept!
Have you considered using musical instruments to sort? Piano, oboe, bandeon, etc?
If you can't find place in Philadelphia Center City, consider the Main Line. Lots of colleges out here: Bryn Mawr, Eastern U, Cabrini,et al.
Keep up the good work.

Hey Tim,
There's a great band from New Jersey/Northeast Philly worth listening to called Life Slides Down. I highly recommend checking out the band. Great mix of rock music with great lyrics, and who can forget about the catchy tunes!! www.lifeslidesdown.com is the link to check out their music in advance, and hey, if you like what you hear they do have a schedule of shows on there. Hopefully there's one happening when you're in Philly!

Just dropping a line a friend of mine showed me your sight last week and I signed up right away. I think what you have done is awesome. I love alot of music from the early 70's and has always been so hard to find to listen too. I was totally blown away to hear so many songs that I have been hunting for. So Kudo's to you from all of us that like to go back in time every once in awhile....
Thanks again for a great sight......

IS THERE ANY PARTICULAR REASON WHY THERE'S NO CLASSICAL MUSIC ON THIS SITE? (NOT THAT I LOOKED, BUT) I DIDN'T SEE ANY MENTION OF IT BEING BLOCKED OR WHATEVER.
ALSO, THERE ARE PLENTY OF BANDS ON MYSPACE THAT ARE TRYING TO "BREAK OUT" OR WHATEVER, AND I HAVE SOME ON MY FRIENDS LIST, IF YOU'D LIKE TO TAKE A LOOK: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=141138 FEEL FREE TO BROWSE. I KNOW THESE GUYS THROUGH THE MINISTRY (BAND) FANSITE (ministrymusic.org ) AND THEY'RE PRETTY COOL, WITH A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT SOUNDS.
PS: I'M NOT SHOUTING, THIS IS JUST MY SIGNATURE. :)

The music scene in Pittsburgh is very hot right now. There's definitely a big club scene, but as mentioned above, the golden triangle is home to 3 major colleges with other big schools just a stones throw away. Get to the strip district to go clubbing or see local talent. Check out amateur night in many venues and of course, all of the schools offer battles of the bands. Come to the Burg. We welcome you. (And don't pay any attention to what Sienna Miller said!)

Too late this year, but next year you might want to schedule a meet in Bethlehem PA (aka Music City) during either Musikfest (http://musikfest.org) in August, or at Celtic Classic in September (same organization as Musikfest.) If you want an indoor place to have a meetup you might want to check with the folks at Godfrey Daniels (http://www.godfreydaniels.org/)
Re the music lists, can you see if you can add some more ethnic stuff? Gypsy Fiddling (the Danchenkos or Sergey Ryabtsev), Griot from Africa (Kandia Kouyate), some non-commercial Zydeco (anyone with the last name of Ardoin to start), and maybe a bit of that good gutsy gris-gris Island stuff (Exuma) for starters. I'm sure I can come up with a hundred more. Thanks for the good tunes!

Thanks for all the GREAT comments everyone. Just great. It sounds like we definitely have to make a stop in Pittsburgh. I won't be able to squeeze it in on this particular trip, but I will definitely plan to come back. We'll be looking for suggestions on venues, so definitely stay in touch...
Can't wait to meet everyone at the UPenn get together. Folks on campus have been super helpful in setting this up and spreading the word.

This is the greatest idea! I've enjoyed Pandora since TIME listed it as a top website. As a working mom, I often multi-task in our family room at one of our computers while listening to Pandora, so...
How about adding an option to filter out explicit songs? (KT Tunstall surprised us all!)
Also, is there any way to print a list of the songs we've liked from a radio station to later check the albums on iTunes instead of buying only the one song?

Hi, I'm the editor of an indie music magazine that covers New York and PA... we really love your stations around our office, and appreciate that you're travelling about looking for cool scenes.
I really, really think you guys need to go check out the kids at R5 in Philadelphia. This collaborative art/music group is responsible for the most amazing music coming to, and being produced in Philly. I cannot send them enough love vibes to cover it - they are amazing. Some fun bands they have brought to Philly in the past year have been Seu Jorge, Clinic, and Spoon, as well as LOADS of up and coming bands.
www.r5productions.com
Summertime in PA brings two amazing folk venues - The Philadelphia Folk Festival on the east side, and Blue Heron Folk Festval on the west.
In Erie, that other side of the state, there is a really great scene brewing that reaches out tentacles into Pittsburgh and Cleveland's rich musical scenery - classic rock, post punk, emo/screamo... you name it. And of course, not to leave out lovely central NY - Ithaca has an amazing folk scene with it's own Muse Festival.
Perhaps you should stay out here a while... we could keep you really busy!

I just started using Pandora a few weeks ago, and I'm already addicted to it. It's one of the first things I open up on my computer in the morning.
One a different note, I'm also an undergrad on the campus programming board at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA (about an hour from Philly). Tim, it would be awesome if you could swing up to the Lehigh Valley to do a town meeting for some of the schools up here. There are 5 or 6 colleges and universities around here, and I know that Pandora is really gaining popularity fast. We can set up one of our campus spaces to bring in people from all over the Lehigh Valley. Just shoot me an email if you are interested, and keep up the great work!!
