Update - Here are the details for the upcoming Indiana visit!
WHEN: Tuesday, October 17th, 2006 at 6 pm
WHERE: Indiana University Memorial Union: Frangipani Room
900 East 7th Street
Bloomington, IN 47405
To RSVP for the meetup, just send an email to tour@pandora.com with "Bloomington" in the subject line. Can't wait to see you there!
I'm currently planning an itinerary for my first tour stop in Indiana. Come mid-October, I'll be stopping in Indianapolis for a town hall meeting, and would love the opportunity to meet Pandora student listeners at nearby Indiana University or other local colleges. If you have any suggestions for appropriate venues on the college campus or other spots, don't hesitate to leave a comment below. I can't wait to visit!
We love reading and responding to your feedback on the blog - the comments have been a treasure trove of great insights and guidance as we plan our visits. If you have a particular idea you want to discuss, or just want to get more involved, we're eager for help - just drop us an email at tour@pandora.com. Please include your location in the subject line of your message too. No idea is too big or small!

It would be nice if we could bookmark other song
titles on an album instead of just one song at a time.

Pandora has to be the greatest creation since sliced bread and apple pie! This feedback is coming from a 60 year old male who does not gush. Thank you pandora!!

Great site. No criticisms, really. There are a few, but they really are aimed more at the RIAA and intellectual property rights :D I consistently get great music with each artist or song added to a station. The only suggestion is one I'm sure you are all already on top of and that is keep adding music. Hopefully I'll get down to Indy to attend the town hall meeting. Keep up the awesome work.

I suspect that this site is mainly designed for younger people but I love typing in the names of "older" groups I've listened to in the 60s and 70s and hearing some new music that sounds similar. I've found a number of more modern groups that play decent music (not just RapCrap and HipSlop). Thanks for making this site available!!

Since you are coming to Indianapolis, I would recommend if you like Cajun food to try YAT's. It's a great place to eat.
I love your website, it's a great way of learning of new artists. Especially ones that are similiar to those we already listen to. Keep up the good work!

When you're in Indiana, check out a singer/songwriter named Chris Shaffer. He was lead singer for The Why Store, a band that's included on Pandora. You can find tour dates and other info on Chris at chrisshaffer.com.

Thanks everyone. Can't wait to hit Indiana. It will actually be my first time ever in the state - so really looking forward to it. Hope to leave town with an armful of great local music.

While you're in Indy, check out the finest Blues music at The Slippery Noodle.

Tim,
I exchanged a few e-mails with you in the early days of Pandora. I am a life-long Indianapolis resident and local musician (guitarist). I hope to attend your town-hall meeting. I love Pandora and still listen. I have told many friends about Pandora. Keep up the great work!

I'm with the "older" listener crowd (college was decades ago) & have to say really enjoy the new artists I've been introduced to on this format. Adding to my research & shopping list daily!
Looking forward to catching your town meeting in Indy even though I'm based 2.5 hours south in Ky.
So consider adding a stop in the Louisville area too.

I really enjoy your site. Maybe I'll be able to drive up in October. I live about an hour south of Indy on I-65.
My main suggestion that would improve the site for me is the one I sent in 7 June 2006. Vic Wong wrote back that it was a great suggestion and he would share it with the team.
That is to provide an easy interface to "uncheck" a Favorite that is playing.
With the new popup-on-mouseover it looks like it would be pretty to repurpose the "thumbs-up" logo that currently does nothing for a selection that is already marked as a favorite. For the favorite, that position could be used to remove the "thumbs-up", for songs I initially used to guide the station, but which I would now like to not hear as often. I currently just mark them as "don't play for 30 days", but being able to easily "uncheck" them would be a very welcome addition to make fine-tuning the station easier.
Thanks for a great site.

Hi,
I'm in the "middle" crowd, as a 35-year-old grad student. If you come to Bloomington to seek out the student view, consider getting time in one of the cyber cafes or restaurants with Internet access. There are several in the downtown county square neighborhood. Many people (a variety of ages) listen to Pandora while writing papers and stuff at the cafes. Hope you can make it down this way!

A great Indiana based singer-songwriter (a well respected performer on the Folk/Americana circuit) is Tim Grimm.

We would love to have you in Evansville in southwest Indiana. We have two universities, University of Evansville and University of Southern Indiana. We have some great local bands here, not the least of which is HOG-MAW Blues Band.

They released an album last summer which I would love to see on Pandora.
If you're ever in southern Indiana pay us a visit.

Another local favorite is Jennie DeVoe. Her style of music has been described as soulful hippie-funk folk. You can check out sound bits from her 4 CDs at her website, jenniedevoe.com.
I stumbled across Pandora a month ago and have been enjoying it ever since. Keep up the good work!

You have an incredible site. I have been amazed at some of the songs that have come up. The backstage feaures are really cool, too. I am probably one of your older listeners (50 something), and am an amatuer musician, playing jazz and blues guitar. It has been very eye-opening to see the musical relationships that your database reveals. I hope to see you in Indy in October.

I agree with what everyone has said so far...I would call or contact the local independent radio station 92.3 WTTS to get a real feel for the music Hoosiers want. You should really come to Indianapolis during the midwest music summit. Also make sure you eat at Yats (54th and college) it is the best cajun food on the planet. Keep up the good job with pandora.com it is amazing.

You must come to Indiana University in Bloomington...one of the coolest cities in Indiana. Thriving music scene with plenty to do. I personally would really enjoy meeting someone who is involved with Pandora, what an amazing project. Thanks a lot!

Why not plan a trip to Indiana State University in Terre Haute. Actually Terre Haute is home to 3 colleges with nationwide acclaim - St. Mary of the Woods College, a world famous liberal arts college for women and Rose Hulman Institute a world famous engineering school. I loved Pandora at my last job but i can't get it to play on this computer no matter what I do and I miss it a lot.

Hey, if you are going to be in Indy, just stop by Butler University. It's on the North side of town near Broad Ripple, which is home of the Vogue. It's a great little venue. If you're looking for the best Indiana has to offer, check out Reverend Payton and the Big Damn Band and the Virgin Millionaires. Both are fantastic up-and-coming bands.
Love the site. Keep up the great work!

As a recent convert to Pandora and a guy now going to college here, I must also vouch for the awesomeness of Bloomington.

I sincerly hope you come to Indiana Iniversity. It's awesome, great music scene. There's also a ton of excellent international restaurants here that are worth the trip.

The only description I can think of is this is the best web service since google, maybe better. I have only been listening for an hour and I am PUMPED! I work at Wabash College in Crawfordsville Indiana and I would be happy to set something up if you want to travel an hour west of Indianapolis to visit a small liberal arts College for Men (that's right, its an all male school).
Thanks for persuing a great idea!

I am a college student in Evansville and I listen to Pandora all the time. I love finding new songs and then buying them from iTunes right away. It would be great if Pandora stopped in Evansville. U of Evansville has about 3 different places that would work well for this.

I know IU would gladly welcome you. If you contact the School of Informatics (phone (812) 856-5754 or email informat@indiana.edu) I'm sure they'd welcome you as well - they have a lot of really exciting speakers and you'd fit in well.
Hope to see you quite soon!

Definitely visit Bloomington! Only 45 min. from Indy and well worth the drive. Lots of bands, bars, great restaurants, etc. I absolutely LOVE pandora!!! No complaints at all!

IUPUI campus is right in the heart of downtown Indy, and would be a great centrally located site for your town hall meeting. Love the Pandora. I am getting lots of great music I would not have heard. Thanks a bunch.

You guys should consider stopping by Saint Mary of the Woods College. We are located in Saint Mary of the Woods Indiana; not too far from ISU. It is an all female campus.

I am just learning how to use the site! And I love it so far. "Neil Young" radio is my first station, and it's great what other song options are coming up with similar sounds and lyrics. When you come to Indy, check out the live music scene at Birdys, and the Slippery Noodle for sure. Have breakfast at 3 a.m. at Peppy's Grill in Fountain Square ;)
Posted by: Trixie at September 9, 2006 05:50 PM
Being a life-long Hoosier, I can vouch for the Slippery Noodle being a great place to see great music. As an IU grad student, while in Bloomington, be sure to check whats going on at the Blue Bird and/or Uncle Festers. I'd say they generally have the best acts in town. As far a food goes, just find 4th street (the next street south of the main strip, i.e. Kirkwood). Great international cuisine, but I've had better cajun in Indy than they serve at Yats, but its still good. There are, however, certainly MANY better choices.

I love pandora! It's like perfect radio!
Posted by: fnunez at September 12, 2006 07:13 PM
In my opinion, the best thing to come out of Indiana as far as music goes is Margot & The Nuclear So & Sos. Other than that, there's not too much here. Even the Midwest Music Summit was pretty crappy this year. Last year was better because of the acts that came from other states. Which there seemed to be very few of this year. Silversun Pickups being one of the few. And with the help of the radio station WRZX, it really brought the worst music possible to MMS. And then the bands from Indiana were a very poor choice. The Elms, for example, were quite possible the most pretentious band I've ever seen. It also doesn't help that they call themselves "Indiana's Rock & Roll Champions" on their website. That's not egotistical at all. Especially for a band that's not very good at all. Sure, the guitarist has talent. But that's about it. Everything's coming out of Nashville now. (AutoVaughn, Bang Bang Bang) I haven't been to a local show yet this year and said, "Wow, I really like this artist that's playing right now. Who is it?"
I guess if you HAVE to come to Indiana, go for it. But, personally, I would stay far, far away from here.
Posted by: Tristan at September 13, 2006 10:19 AM
So I don't know when "mid-October" is, but you might try to coincide your visit to Bloomington with the 13th annual Lotus World Music & Arts Festival (www.lotusfest.org) that is running from the 5th through the 8th (though the big music days are Friday and Saturday). It'd be worth your trouble, trust me. HUGE line-up and non-stop action.
Posted by: ObiWanKeenobi at September 14, 2006 07:28 AM
My wife and I have recently found out about Pandora and love the idea. You could say that we are addicted.
The only real improvement I can think of is that some of the attributes of a song or group that I like are not really listed as one of your classifications. Namely, I love vocal harmonies in a song. When I try to create a station that includes that, it doesn't seem to take that into consideration.
It would also be cool to see an entire list of the attributes of a song. I have seen some lists on "why did we play this song" that listed three things and then "other attributes"
Keep up the good work. I would like to hear exactly when you will be in Indiana. I would also encourage you to check out Bloomington (about one hour south of Indy). There is a ton of local talent and gigs going on just about every day of the week.

When in Bloomington, check out Craig Brenner--Mr. Boogie Woogie! His music plays on Pandora. Craig is one of the few that is still playing in the style of Fats Waller, Professor Longhair, Jerry Lee, Fats Domino, etc. Stride/Boogie Woogie at its finest! craigbrenner.com

You guys should definitely visit IUPUI while you're in Indy. Also if you like German culture and food at all, The Rathskeller is amazing and they offer some really fun live music. It's pretty great food & microbrewed beer. I take everyone who comes to visit there for a night. As an IUPUI student, I feel like we're sometimes looked over and anyone coming to Indiana goes to Purdue or IU to visit. Please stop and see us!!!

Don't forget northern Indiana. I'm near South Bend, where there are many colleges (Notre Dame, St. Mary's, Holy Cross, Indiana University-South Bend, Bethel College and some others that are all within 5 miles of each other). I can't say there's a great music scene here, but that's why we need to have folks like you come to inspire and open people's minds up. There is a strong arts community (theatre, dance, etc.). Notre Dame may host you, as they are very forward thinking (as long as you don't mention the 9-16-06 Michigan game).

A suggestion for the site. I have not really gotten into Pandora because I have my own massive music collection, but I like the idea. I hope to use Pandora more as it develops further. My suggestion is that you somehow do something like what last.fm has done. I like how last.fm records each listener's (scrobbler's) taste and then uses it to compile a similar artists list and create other features---all user based. I don't know how to articulate my idea well, but if you would somehow play specific music based on how users like that music, that would be cool. Or classify it somehow, all using user input in addition to your algorithms and formulas (that you use to determine what is to be played).
What I like about Pandora is it's not run by snobby music critics dicatating what you should listen to if you like something else. I like Pandora's (almost scientific) approact to its music selection. But also incorportating users opinions and tastes would add another dimension.
Posted by: Jon at September 19, 2006 03:57 PM
Pandora is a wonderful resource. Can't get enough of it. As a musician myself, I was excited to see my music on Pandora. It is also fun for me to be able to stream and try out new artists that will help twist my mind in a new creative direction. Looking forward to your Indiana stop. Let me know if you need anything.

In the south eastern part of indiana there is a band called Muzzy. I grew up with the guitar player. Still, I never thought that they would become what they are today. The band is located in Aurora, Indiana. Right in the heel of the boot. They sound slightly weenish... but there is a slight hue of beatles in there. Someday i can see them making some truly incredible music.

Very interesting, I'd say this definately fits with the Informatics department here at IU (which i considered for awhile before choosing comm. and culture). I look forward to seeing Pandora's visit, hopefully I'll have something ready to contribute by the 17th.

I just got an e-mail about Pandora coming to Indiana but it looks like Bloomington was the only city on your itinerary. What happened to Indianapolis?! (...sigh...) I think you'll get a good turnout in Bloomington, though. If you come through you should definitely check out Radio Radio in Fountain Square - it's a great venue to hear music and you don't leave reeking of smoke.
Food-wise, you can't go wrong with these:
meat - Judges Tip of the Rib BBQ
veggie - Udupi Cafe
pizza - Bazbeaux Pizza
the best beef patties in the midwest - my place
Pandora is a breath of fresh air. I thought I was pretty in the know about the music I like, but Pandora has exposed me to songs and artists I've never heard...or reminded me to pick up CDs from bands I haven't heard from in awhile. Keep up the good work!

Pandora cannot afford to miss Indianapolis for the following reasons:
Marian College
Martin College
IvyTech University
University of Indianapolis
Butler University (go Bulldogs!)
Indiana University-Purdue University at Indinapolis (IUPUI)
2005 Graduate and Undergraduate enrollment in IUPUI alone stopped just shy of 100,000 students.
Butler University recently finished an entire building devoted to electronic arts and media.
Check us out! Email me if you need support or have questions.

I LOVE your site, and I've passed it along to many. It's rare I pass along sites to friends. But your site is life changing. Thanks for turning me on to new bands and new music. You have increased my music purchases. The project is great. Keep expanding your list of music and thanks for making the site so simple to use.
You rock.

I would like to be able to look over my favorites (bookmarks) and see which albums have the most tracks that I have bookmarked. Then when I am at the music store I would have an idea of which albums have the most tracks I am interested in.
Thanks for the tunes! See you at IU.

I wish I could urge you to come to the place I did my gradute work .. but it is rather lame as far as music goes. Valparaiso University! It is smack dab between Chicago and South Bend. The good thing is... it is near a mecca of musical diversity. Chicago is only 46 miles from my house. If you came anywhere near Valpo I would be there in a flash! I love love love this project.
Purdue University has been woefully overlooked here as well. A great student body there.

I wish that pandora could be used with Windows Media Player, instead of having a sepate player. Also when adding music I would like it if we could enter more than one artist or song at a time.

I love Pandora! I like that when I am listening to a quick mix I can tell which station the song 'came' from. I do wish that I could move a song from one station to another when I am 'in' quick mix.
