NYC Meetup & Pandora on Air America
Spent a wonderful evening with Jeff and Stephanie at a cozy NY cafe - lots of great feedback and ideas from these two thoughtful and enthusiastic Pandora listeners... Thanks you guys for taking the time. It's made me eager for the next gathering. We're thinking of a Southern states swing in March... starting in TX. Let me know if you want to host one.
Also, tomorrow we're going to be on Air America - Rachel Maddow did the interview in NYC. Rachel rocks... It's scheduled for 2:30pm EST as part of the "Al Franken Show.' Info on their website. http://shows.airamericaradio.com/alfrankenshow/

This software is incredible. Thank you -- I will probably choose to purchase a paid subscription in the near future, though I might not mind advertisements. Radio gets one used to that sort of business model.
A crucial add-on suggestion: I would be extremely interested in making direct use of the terminology the software displays when explaining a selection, and in particular, it would be nice to be able to choose some characteristic like "acoustic sonority" and have selections randomly played from that wide field.
To be honest about it, I would happily accept a commercial before each song, if the software granted me that ability to explore a range entirely unfamiliar genres based on some singular quality that appeals to me. No radio broadcast could offer even remotely equivalent utility.
Please pass these comments on to customer service or the appropriate department -- and good call promoting your service on Air America, sir, I learned of you from them and would not have found this service otherwise.

I've got to agree, this software is really amazing. I've tried services that claim to do similar things (MSN and Yahoo both tried their hand at this) and they weren't nearly so good.
I'd love to see some more modern folk in your collection, but I know you're probably working on that and every other genre you can get your hands on.
And, again to agree with l00n, good score getting on Air America... that's how I found you too.

Air America got me dude. Within 5 minutes of the interview I had loged in created an account and started down the "fractal music jukebox"
This is a fantastic idea. I've been listening for over an hour I think.
Thank you for thinking 4th dementionally. I've already told everyone I know about it. We're on a quest to find the greatest misicannibus station ever!!
LMAO
Have a great one!

I heard about your site today on Air America. I love it!!! Thank you for the opportunity to listen.

I also heard the interview on AAR, and am also already hooked on Pandora.
Incredible stuff. Great work.

Pandora is great! Wish I could have joined you in NY. If you ever come to Philadelphia, I'd love to meet you.
I've been using Pandora for several weeks now and have told many friends about it. There is one genre which I love and seems to be totally missing - what you might call ambient-atmospheric-electronic music. Artists in this genre include Steve Roach (http://www.steveroach.com/), Robert Rich, Suspended Memories, and Byron Metcalf. Can you take a look at these? Thanks!

Me too! Signed up after hearing about it on AAR, server must have been overloaded, it promptly forgot me (or I typed in my pass word worng...(imagine that)). Already "discovered some wonderful music, I'm listening to Eva Cassidy's "Songbird" right now (nice).
Figured I'd use the blog instead of customer support to make some comments and observations.
Your player needs an EQ (actually my speakers need it)
In one instance after entering a long song title the text in the dialog box went off the right hand side and I couldn't click on the choice.
I noticed that there were a few song titles that weren't recognised, does your program make use of these entries?
This application SCREEMS for a neural network type application, beyond music do you try to gage lyrics (poetic, subtile, visual)? The more parameters you can gage the more intresting the functionality will become. For example allowing users to select other stations from a list generated by the program, or, using these stations to pick yet unrated music.
OMG Agenetha Falskog (ABBA?) singing "The Queen of Hearts is Back in Town" (Didn't know she was still making recordings...)
Anaway, I really like the service, I wont mind the ads (1 in 3?) and as soon as I can find a job I can pay for premium services.
Thanks...

Heard about Pandora on Air America. I've been listening all night. I'm overjoyed at what I've heard. Started with typing in "Bad Brains" and the punk slection is impressive! Can't wait till I go down "The Mars Volta" road. Tom, let me know if you plan to come to Colorado, I'd like to shake your hand

Hello! I just wanted to say thank you for the great service. I set up a station for our small political site and have asked our members to make suggestions. It has resulted ina rather unique station covering a great deal of American music with some international influences.
We'd be interested in helping you to get the word out. Just let me know how I can help.

Hey Pandora Team-
I have been using Pandora for a few weeks now, and have to say it has become my music player of choice. I dedicated a post in my blog to discussing your little music player (http://www.mattwhelandesigns.com/blogarchivequery.php?postnumber=16). The only reason I would abandon Pandora at this point is if the ads became too frequent. If you ever make it to Minneapolis, I'll buy you a beer (or a soda).

I wasn't prepared... It's just GREAT! You must have a huge database. It's my first time here and i'm listening to my MOGWAI like radio it's its just great!

THANK YOU!!!! i heard about pandora on air america radio. this is the single most amazing program i have ever seen. i entered about a dozen or so of my favorite bands, and not only has pandora played many of my favories from them, but has already introduced me to several other bands that are amazing. it is far better than any internet radio station. (besides air america) not only will this program be running constantly when i am browsing the net or playing online poker, but i am going to tell everyone i know about it, and will be subscribing soon. thank you again.

Great!
I was listening to Air America and heard about Pandora. After spending some time customizing my radio station a vision came to me.
It may be a paradox now but just hear me out...
Pandora Jute Box, in every bar. Monthly fee includes internet connection. Same idea as digital gambling in bars except this is a source for music. Bars could quickly learn about there customers as well, to improve how they get more money from them. Maybe this is premature, don't know.
With some modification to the internet version, (such as pre-made options for selecting genre)it could be a Jute Box that is alive for the first time for all the people who want music of there liking. For example: A person could put in $5 into the Jute and it would play bands they like but not songs they request (if that is legal, I dont know). Maybe it couldn't work but it should be thought about. Something about this Pandora, has an element that could replace the Jute Box if legal matters don't get in the way.
Cheers!

Hey guys!
Keep up the good work!
Come to Michigan! A.D.D. + Heavily Caffinated Hot Chocolate = More (Mostly Good) Ideas in less time!
I would love to have the name of the album under or over or ontop of or next to the album cover, would be rather handy!
(When I say Michigan I more specifically mean the metro-detroit area, as in sterling heights, as in the barista cafe (or any starbucks or borders in the area).
Also, changing the way it looks with themes, these colors are great and easy on the eyes, but comon, metalheads don't want cream and off white and beige...they want black and grey and red! If you like this idea let me know I'm a web designer!

I just caught you on the Racheal Maddow Show this evening (repeat here in Portland Oregon) I just bookmarked your site and think you have a tremendous thing going for you...
I was wondering if you were going to get into the Hawiian Genre? There are a lot of beautiful contemporary and classical Hawiian songs and artists out there that write and play exquisitly.
Love your idea, and really hope that everything manages to come together. I can see where this is not only going to be a labor of love, but a several lifetime project.
Bravo to the Pandora Team... I wish you all Happy Holidays and a very prosperous New Years!

OK, here's a question, could you add a feature that would produce a playlist for a session? (can it do this already, and I just missed it?) I use the Griffin RocketFM with my computer so that I can listen to my computer all over the house and yard (that is the best $40 I ever spent; terrestrial radio is utter crap where I live).
I listen via the Mac Safari browser, and it isn't very Flash-friendly, so the ability to scroll back is extremely limited. I love what I'm hearing, but I'm kind of sunk if I hear something fantastic and can't get back to the computer to see what it was.

Love your site! I work in a government building and our internet blocks EVERYTHING. I get this website everyday with no problems at all. I have my own music, but it is always nice to hear something new in the same style as your favourite band!

Hi all,
I just wanted to comment what a great service this is. I live in Belgium, but am a big fan of a lot of American music. A lot of groups don't get too much attention over here, and thanks to pandora now I can discover a lot more music than I used to!
If you guys ever wanna promote your product in Europe, let me know if I can do something to help!
Also, I don't really mind the advertisements, but I might get a subscription, as I think the more money you can get, the more work you can put into developing pandora even more! So after I've moved house next year, I know what I'm going to do with my money!
Keep up the good work!

Heard you on Air America and have been listening and tweaking all day at the office. You've made my workday fly by, and that's saying something.
The alogrithm seems to put lots of emphasis on the last thing you told it, doesn't it?

Keep us posted on the meet ups! It would be great to sit and yak about the music and the goodness of Pandora. This has replaced my normal web radio, plus my blues station (Drink or Die!) has been gone for sometime now. Punching in my artist and BAM! Blues for the whole darn day.
Wonderful.

I love pandora, I make firefox automatically open up a tab with pandora everytime I start my browser.
I have a couple of suggestions. I think that adding a paypal link on the site some place might be a good idea. I wouldn't mind donating a couple bucks here or there to a great site such as this.
I'm a student, and I'm always in between using my own personal computer at home and the school lab computers (which you can't install anything on). The ability for me to listen to all my stations at either of these locations is one of my favorite features of Pandora.
I'm going to have to disagree with some of the first posters of this comments page. I wouldn't like it if there was audio commercials in Pandora, and it would make me look into other radio stations if there was commercials. That's another one of the great features of Pandora, the unobtrusive ad on the page and that's it.
And I noticed that you might be visiting Texas. I'd be interested in a Texas meetup, if you happen to visit a city that I live near.
If my memory serves me correctly, Pandora used to be a program that you actually downloaded onto your computer, (not the flash based way it is now). I've been a user since then, and I like all the changes you have made since then.
And just a quick request to have "The Cynic Project" included on Pandora, they're a personal electronica favorite of mine.

I've been listening for quite awhile; makes my day behind the screen go much more quickly. One curious musical link has happened to me a couple of times. I have a Neo-Soul type station..Calvin Richardson, D'Angleo..anyway when Richardson's "Country Boy" plays it is followed up by some Clint Black or Toby Keith. I like to stay open but country music just makes my ears bleed. Its not too difficult to hit the "I don't like it" but just alerting you. Thanks for everything!

Dial-Up Suggestion
I am traveling and connected via dial-up. I have some thoughts:
1. Allow the song to be downloaded in the background and then make the song clickable/playable when it is fully downloaded.
2. Have a simple text version of the front panel.
3. Acknowledge the connection speed of various members and have one and two happen automatically.
Thanks!

Are you ever going to be heading to Oregon, or Seatle washington area?
Posted by: Joe Wilson at December 20, 2005 05:55 PM
Just found you yesterday. Already have 20 stations set up. What can I say but Wow! ?
A couple quick ideas.
1. As I was playing my various stations, I absent-mindedly mused how fun it would be to rotate my stations in my preferred order instead of the default by creation we have currently. I also thought it would be fun if each station kept track of full length plays like they do individual song plays on iTunes. After Bette Midler Radio we might see (24) and after James Taylor Radio (227). then we'd be able to see for ourselves which stations are getting great play and which may have to be deleted as we reach the max.
2. To compliment the "I like it" and "I don't like it" buttons, you might benfit from two additional: a. "Heard before and like/don't like it." b. "Never heard before and like/don't like it." The benefit would be you would be able to break away the statistical group of those who came in with preconceived notions of an artist or song from those who were being exposed to either for the first time. This might be valuable data to your advertisers. Hope this helps.
Anyway, thanks for the great service.

Heard of you from Jason Mulgrew, you know the quasi-internet celeb.
Anyway, keep up the great tunes and hopes to see you in Florida, maybe the Jax Beach area on your southern tour. I'm trying to set up a venue for your tour here. If I get anything definite I'll email more info, see what your availability and preferences are.

Posted by: Haiuken at December 22, 2005 06:04 AM
Hi,
Quick suggestion. You should create some HTML tags that people can put on their blogs/homepages etc. These tags will point at the most recently listened to station they've picked (or could be updated daily or weekly for "most listened to", or "tracks i like" etc), allowing others to listen to the same if they want.
Cheers,
Luke
Posted by: Luke at December 22, 2005 06:43 AM
Hi,
Quick suggestion. Don't clutter up the service with garbage like HTML tags and especially ads between songs (that would just kill the service -- why put up with ads when one could listen to the service every once in a while to get a good sampling of music then download the rest?).
Posted by: Sam at December 24, 2005 02:10 PM
Unlike most of the responders, I didn't hear about the Genome on Air America; I had listened to an archived NPR piece a few months ago. I, too, think it's a wonderful idea and have been turning friends on to the site.
Now for my two-cents' worth.
In creating Zen Radio I found several drawbacks. I launched with a single artist, a master of the Japanese shakuhachi flute. Soon, I found ambient selections mixed in, and several I liked a great deal and felt they added to the aural feel I was after. But too often (especially if I gave the preceding track the "thumbs-up") there would follow a succession of the same type of material -- ambient, ambient, ambient, ambient, flute, flute, ambient, ambient . . . . I don't know exactly how this could be overcome -- perhaps a "shuffle" feature, or some other way to stack the tracks.
It would also be helpful to have (as others have suggested) a way to refine choices beyond the name of an artist or song. One way would be to list instruments, tonality, rhythm pattern, ethnic origin, etc. In my case, it would have saved much time if I'd been able to launch the station or add music by entering "zen flute" or "Japanese temple bells," for example.
One other frustration was finding the name of an artist in the genre I'd singled out (say, "Joe Blow") only to be presented with a list of similar names (Joe Cocker, Joe Williams, Joe Walsh). At this point, I should be able to send my artist into your databank for you to check out, but my only choice is the "cancel" button. So, no music by "Joe Blow" and no way to tell you about him.
Keep up the great work. It's a pleasure listening and creating.

Hi,
It seems that you have a great idea here. As someone who enjoy music & work in the computer field, I think that your "web 2.0" software is really amazing but ... why o why there seems to be only american musicians in your database.
I looked for Salif Keita (african musician with a record contract with Universal), Youssou N'Dour (who is really famous), Bnabar (french artist), Gilberto Bebel (one of the most famous brazilian songwriter) and the same answer came back again & again "is it a song name or an artist name ?"
Keep goin'on this is a great idea !

I've been using this great site for six weeks or so. This method of getting to music I like is very appealing, however your web site's implimentation of it is not so easily navigated in some areas. Minimizing the player is desireable but when using it in that form, i.e. nominating a song to my favorites sends me to the favorites page in the minimized window with no fore or back arrows. To get back to the player I have to close it and reopen the site again. When the site reopens it never displays the player I have to click on "bring back the player".allowing navigation back to the player page. Why can't I nominate a song and not go to the page until I need to see all the favorites? I'm using firefox maybe someone can tell me if that is the problem.
Posted by: Chris Vetter at December 27, 2005 04:24 PM
I have to agree with many people on the HTML stuff.
Im not a pro at it, but if there was a way to remove certain things, that would be good.
This is definately better than Musicmatch.
(I use that to download songs to my Dell DJ 20..it sucks)
You guys should have your own service to download songs onto MP3 players, and not just iPODS.

As a rather recent (as of yesterday) fan of your site, I'd like to point back to the very first comment on this article, by l00n, on " making direct use of the terminology the software displays when explaining a selection" - in fact, I'd like to be able to select from the terminology the software does not display, as well.
That's a suggestion, not a complaint. Your software does a much better job of 'guessing' what I like than anything similar I've run across (in both musical and non-musical areas). It's just that it can still be improved.
Posted by: Kathy K at December 28, 2005 05:00 PM
Oh - one addendum. Buttons that say "I like this song, but not on this station" and a "I really dislike this song on any station, don't ever serve it to me again" might get you (and your advertisers) some useful information.
Posted by: Kathy K at December 28, 2005 05:03 PM

As most people who would post here, i highly enjoy this project. However, it sucks up way too many resources in it's current implementation. it's ludicrous.
also; it would be fantastic if you could allow more of an interactive conversation between listener and pandora for finding music. beyond just adding artists and individual songs for fine tuning, you could allow to look for more open ended searches along the lines of what comes up in the "why did you pick this song" answers.
otherwise fantastic product with a wide selection. can't wait to see where this goes.

Genius strikes again. I fall behind your growing number of established supporters as I was just introduced to your site last week.
Plenty grateful to that friend of mine who told me about the site and the project. I am even more appreciative of how your crew brewed this idea and served it to the vast circle of music lovers.
Those listed prior were good suggestions, and it is good to continue making enhancements. However, what I know of your service right now enthused me enough to speak to a couple more people about it. The chain will hopefully go on - and from this and others, this idea called Pandora will fully tip - if it hadn't already.
I will be moving to San Fran in a few months, but any chance of a planned Boston trip for you all in the near future?

To the Pandora Team, GREAT PROJECT!!! Categorically, simply one of the best ideas relating to music I've met on the net - and i spend more time here than my body needs believe me!
I can't imagine how busy you must be but I'm guessing very so I'll try to keep it concise.
Comments:
critical feedback may be of the variety you've heard, please don't take it as ragging at all - if i spent this contact telling you what's awesome from the name Genome to the fact that it's free I doubt you'd read this all.
BIG POSITIVE: Thank whatever almighty there may or may not be (inclined toward Wakan Tanka, Kali and Buddha but whatever) that somebody is UTILIZING and ADAPTING TO the possibilities of the internet paradigm rather than trying to restrict its potential within the heavily established shop-front box mentality. It's like Creative Commons style licensing versus the reaction to sampling in music by the music industry in mid 80s and beyond. Fear Of A Black Planet and Psalm 69 might never have happened if label owners had the kind of creative control corporations want over the net right now, but they're two of the finest slabs of sound ever punched out. You're out there now, GOOD WORK!!!
fb/ suggestion: For what I'm guessing has many elements of a pilot project, it seems you've anticipated many users' wants & needs obviously being music fans yourselves. As lushly diverse as your music categorisation back end would seem to be, i'm guessing that the nature of the lyrics/ artist's attitude is not an attributable area when music gets put in the system. Clearly, this would be difficult to do, given different subcategories possible and divergence of perceptions. But it would be great before this thing blows up if Pandora was enabled to start recognizing that there's a distinct difference for many people between, for examples: Bjork and Deep Forest (thieving m.f.s that they are), Mr Lif and Jay Z, Dead Kennedys and Linkin Park.
I guess it's about giving an option that considers music in terms of what it says, in addition to or rather than how it sounds.
Please drop a line and let us know how we can hook you up with a bunch of wicked underground sounds from crunchy bent bands, hiphop acts and noise artists making wicked sounds in Australia.

P.S. >>> just read other suggestions and not trying to start any kind of blog bitch-in, but NO ADS BETWEEN SONGS!!! Once they get in it's game over if history is any teacher, we have a choice about reacting to ads we read but once that stuff gets airtime between tracks - uh-uh. We've been so corporated that people think that having a department called 'creative' in marketing agencies isn't even ironic.

I think one new new application of this technology could be some sort of iTunes or Media Player plugin. As an individuals local music collection grows its much harder to organize and find music, especially searching for a mood or acoustic style. I would gladly pay for a service which did just that to my own personal music collection.

yo pandora rocks. i love it and i've discovered so many new songs i love. thank ya so much. keep it real!

Hello.
Congratulations for this project. I've been spreading the word and I always (and I mean always) get good opinions (like my own). I think it's brilliant to bo able to say "I don't like this song, don't play it again on this station", very clever.
I wanted to ask you if you are also expanding the musical database in classical music. I wrote Chopin, as an examplo, and it suggested me Choppa. Same for other couple of artists.
So I've asked.
Thanks for everything great so far. And the interface, perfect! Very beautiful. Too bad you can't go back on the list and listen to a song twice. But hey this is supposed to be radio-like, right?

I really like this band called Squint which I saw on the Jagermeister Music Tour. They also got an ASCAP Plus Award Any chance of adding them?
Thanks

Awesome site and service!
Two added things would make Pandora all that more GREAT...
1) "LOOK FOR IT" (button) and music service for artists or songs not currently listed in the Genome Project.
2) Create music stations by selecting a "GENRE". Especially for listening to 'hard to find' music like Jazz, Acid Jazz, Trance/Ambient and House.

Think of this:
a "Pandora's BOX"...
a wireless MP3-player-like-device that streams Pandora in WiFi hotspots or wherever there is a wireless internet connection. With a display that shows the same content the Flash GUI does.
Can you say "Bye Bye, XM & Sirius (and FM radio for that matter) !?!?" :)
(subscription or not)

I heard the same song within an hours time or so. Seems like a glitch to me. Otherwise, nice. Real nice.

Hey, I'm in TX and me and some friends of mine are all addicted to Pandora now.
Come to Dallas and we can all have a lovely chat!
Posted by: Nikki at January 7, 2006 06:10 PM
Superb. You guys have managed to achieve what many services have claimed to do in the past. I am addicted.

Not only is Pandora a great service, I truly respect the voice of the site. Friendly, knowledgable, engaging. It's obvious the listener comes first with Pandora.
I sent your site around to fellow music freaks at my company in November after reading your Fast Company article. The Pandora Player continues to be everyone's favorite. One thought we all had - renaming your "Minimize" button to something a bit more intuitive. "Undock player" might be an alternative.
Regarding advertising - I'm crossing my fingers you will not launch audio ads without a variety of committed sponsors. A number of us stopped using both AOL Radio and Launch as a result of hearing the same spot 5-10 times in an hour. (My parents didn't nag me as a teen as often as Yahoo was telling me last year to upgrade my Launch service for the cost of a cup of coffee. I hate repetition. Also, coffee.)
It is my assumption that you have some of the smartest, highest earning consumers on the Web listening to your terrific service. What a wonderful thing it would be to have equally smart sponsors who respect and understand this online medium and its intelligent listeners.
Yes, I live in a dream world. With rivers filled with delicious, chocolatey Ovaltine. Soundtrack by Pandora.
Thanks for the great service. And best of luck - looking forward to seeing what's next!

The best software out there right now. Intuitive, and powerful... Don't mess up like others did. Stay with your original mantra.

I know many radio station sites which help find similar music like this one, but I feel Pandora is the best with the no-nonsense approach.
I seriously have no idea how long I have been listening, or how I bumped into this gem in the web. One thing for sure that, me being outside the US, it was not through Air-America. Maybe I like music THAT much?
Thank you, and keep streaming!
PS: I hope you guys do something about allowing non-US residents. Surely audio streaming regulations are much more relaxed outside the US as there are only few listeners of English songs comparatively (for example, me!)

A fellow NY'er just turned me onto your service today. I'm enjoying what I hear!
FYI: I've been a Napster subscriber for 3 years. Your $36 deal is a steal.
Posted by: owen.amends at January 8, 2006 02:26 PM
Wow. This is an amazing service. I haven't even heard an ad yet, but I bought a subscription for a year. I'm here to stay if you guys (and gals?) are. Best of luck with Pandora.

I don't impress easily (especially where websites are concerned) but Pandora is totally amazing. I discovered it a few days ago, and I've been telling everyone I know about it. I'm trying to figure out whether it will cost me a fortune because of all the great artists I'm discovering or if I'll just listen to my Pandora stations for the rest of my life (no doubt the artists and your sponsors would prefer the former). I just need to figure out how to install satellite broadband in my car. Sirius Shmirius...
Seriously, thanks for this remarkable musical taxonomy you've so successfully undertaken, and keep up the good work! (and lotsa luck with Bach, Beethoven and Stravinsky) I'm sure I'll have some constructive complaints after I've lived with Pandora a while longer.

The title, Air America sent a buzzer off in my head. This would be a great service to offer on airplanes! There would be no better time to explore new music.

Thanks for this site. It is awesome. i met someone in a chat room this morning, and he told me about it. :)

Pandora is brilliant.
Regarding the comment made on Dec 16th about the only reason to abandon Pandora would be if the advertisements became to frequent.
Perhaps one should consider paying for this application in order to fuel its excellence.
Posted by: INVAN at January 13, 2006 12:41 PM
This is incredible. I didn't think there would be anything new on the web that could make my jaw drop. I was wrong.
I think I will subscribe, not to avoid ads, but just to support such great work.
Posted by: c_bus at January 14, 2006 09:07 AM
Regarding one of the first comments above:
""I would happily accept a commercial before each sogn, if the software granted me that ability to explore a range entirely unfamiliar genrest based on"
One of the reasons I have ditched every other music service, is because of online advertisements that I'm forced to *listen* to. Even every 3 or 4 songs is too much! Please, I hope you guys don't go this route. I'm begging you!
I've already clicked on a few of the banner/graphic advertisements to check things out, and bought a CD. But being forced to listen to ads is a whole 'nother ballgame.
