Pandora : Version 2
It's hard for me to believe that it's been just 9 weeks since we launched Pandora. In that time you've created over 1 million stations, starting from 70,000 unique songs and artists. I really can't imagine a more gratifying response. Easily the best part of all of this has been interacting with many of you via email and in the blogosphere. Thanks for all the great product and music suggestions. It's been a blast.
We've been busy working on the second version of Pandora and we're launching today. We're adding new features and an entirely new way to enjoy Pandora.
On the feature front, you've told us loud and clear that you want a way to keep track of the music you're discovering on Pandora. So we've added a "favorites" feature that lets you add songs to your very own Pandora personal page. Just click on the album art when you hear a song you love and select "Add to Your Favorites Page" from the menu. Your favorites page is a great consolidated shopping list of all he music you're discovering on Pandora. You can even share your personal page with friends -- who knows maybe they'll get the hint about what to get you the next time your birthday rolls around, There are easy links to Amazon and iTunes right on the page. We've also (finally) given you the ability to review and edit all of the work you've put into your stations. Just click the little triangle next to a station name and select "Edit this Station". You'll see all the feedback you've given (thumbs up/down) as well as the songs and artists you've added with the "Add More Kinds of Music" feature. Make changes till your heart's content. You can even use this same feature to look at the definitions for stations that your friends have sent you. While those are the big, obvious new features, we've also been hard at work on playlist generation and we think you'll find that Pandora does a better job now of responding quickly to your feedback and plays better musical mixes. This is a never-ending quest for us; expect playlists to get better each time we release a new version. That's our core mission. This release we've made some very big strides with our Electronica playlists in particular. We think they're much improved; let us know what you think! Finally we've been polishing up lots of little stuff throughout the interface. We think it's the little things that matter, so we hope you like those changes too.
The other big piece of news is that we've opened the doors on an entirely new way to listen to Pandora. You see we'd planned to launch an ad-supported, free version of Pandora next year, but the sheer volume of new listeners that have found Pandora in the past 9 weeks led us to accelerate our timetable for offering the ad-supported, free version of Pandora. So, starting today, you have a choice: you can listen to ad-supported Pandora for free, or you can subscribe and experience an entirely ad-free version. It's completely your choice. The service has exactly the same features either way. We're still experimenting with the right way to bring advertising to Pandora, so you'll notice us playing with different advertising forms over the coming months. We'd love to know what you think as we work through this. We're dedicated to mixing advertising into the experience in a way that doesn't detract from your music discovery experience.
So it's been an incredible, busy, fun, exciting, exhausting, and thrilling couple of months here. We're loving every minute of it. Thank you for being a part of it. As always, we love to hear your thoughts and critiques about what we're doing. Please don't hesitate to drop us an email or leave a comment here.
This is just the beginning. There's lots of great stuff to come and we want your help in shaping the evolution of Pandora. It's sure been a great collaboration so far.
-Tom

PS: For those of you in the Bay Area, we're really hoping to meet you tonight at the first Pandora meetup. We hope you can make it!

Lovin' the new version. I only just heard of Pandora this week and I just can't stop listening. Thank you for restoring my passion for music.
Any chance that we could get a native Dashboard widget version? I was able to make a rudimentary widget that just displays the Flash interface and it's functional, but not very smooth (passing mouseclicks through isn't 100% working).

Tom awesome Ive been pushing Pandora and its potential to the developers of Peer Impact for serval months but they didnt think the subscription model would fly for streamed music for most of thier member base .
I hope you and Wurld Media get together in the near future and incorpote Pandora into thier pay p2p client .

Great update on Pandora, this thing has shown me alot of new music, and now I won't forget what that song I heard yesterday was... yet another reason this beats the crap out of radio. Also, I'm sure the free year is appreciated by everyone. Keep it up, Chuy

I just found out about Pandora and am very, very impressed.
Keep the good work going.

When I got the email that Pandora was offering a free ad-supported version I literally did a happy dance. (embarassing, I know) Pandora's basically restored my faith in listening to _good_ music again.
One comment: I wish I could set a pref so I dont get the bookmarks page every time I set a song as a bookmark. I also wish you had in the UI somewhere to add "suggested artists" or "suggested songs" - where I might add something that you either dont have yet, or couldnt find (like say Keith Green, or Captain Jack)
Posted by: Andrew Wooldridge at November 10, 2005 09:09 PM
Hi Tom,
I was wondering if all the "genes" and the music categorization is done manually or do you also apply some AI/machine learning? What a juicy dataset it would be to try to "learn" from it in active learning model setting.
Posted by: Anshul at November 10, 2005 09:11 PM
Tom,
Amazing, simply amazing. I cannot say how impressed I am with this software. I would particularly congratulate your UI designer(s) as this is litterally the best utilization of flash I've encountered so far. I think the only minor negative I encountered was that I immediately wanted to start giving very specific feedback, just as I would to a friend recommending music. I look forward to an increasing library of music from which Pandora can recommend new tracks, I think this service will be THE way I discover indy tracks, and despite the poor spelling I second Mr. Riti's comments above. ;)
Sincerely,
Ian Danforth

A friend send me a link, so I typed in 'Infected Mushroom' expecting to get no results and close the page, but what I got instead was a favorite song followed by a steady stream of good music I had never heard of but thoroughly enjoyed.
If you keep this up, you'll have me buying yearly subscriptions and dozens of CDs...

I'm very happy to know that development is on-going at Pandora. Nothing irritates me more than stagnation - especially if the thing that's languishing is something i've paid for. Kudos, and keep up the good work!

Your web site rocks guys! You know what would be cool? Some API so we can use it to show on our websites or blogs what music we are listening in real time.
Thanks for this great web site!

This new version rocks! and thanks for creating a free version too.
I have a question, though. Is there a way to mash all of my stations into one master station? So that I get a random song that fits into my overall listening preference. Even if it would be a feature in a future version of Pandora.
Anyway, keep up the great work!

Amazing! I love Pandora, just discovered it this morning. A couple comments:
1) Experienced several server "hiccups" today - not sure if this is because the spike in traffic due to the recent blog coverage or what...need to fix that.
2) Should display the album title (at least in a tooltip), going to the Amazon link isn't the best way and sometimes the album title is not visible on the picture.
3) Should display a visible indication how far along the track has been played. I understand that a user can't control this because of your streaming licenses (or whatever) but a visible indication would still be welcome. Between the pause button and volume slider...
4) Being nice and flashy, it'd be nice to be able to zoom out to my entire playlist in a grid-like window that shows all songs not in a linear line.

Just wanted to say thank you... Thank you for creating what I believe to be the best internet application to date! I know that's a strong statement, but in 10+ years of doing internet and interactive design and development this endeavor has to rank at the top of my killer application list. Pandora has taken an amazingly complex problem and provided the most simple and elegant solution one could imagine. Lightweight, practical, and usable -- you almost couldn't ask for anything more. Almost... ;) I'm currently longing for the day when I can easily and seamlessly access my stations from anywhere... work, car, home, device, etc.
Well done.

Most excellent software. The friend route on finding music for me was leaving much to be desired. My musical tastes are just too different now from the people I know. Thank you so much for creating this service and solving that need for me. This is the type of innovation that makes the internet such a great place. The one and only suggestion I can make for this software would be the ability to stream to an airtunes device. I have found a way to do this but find the process pretty cumbersome. If you could find a way to make this as easy as finding great new music - that would be truly incredible. Thanks again for the great work!

Fantastic work. I've been an Audioscrobbler/Last.fm user for some time, and now I will definitely be spending some quality time with Pandora. I appreciate the work involved getting the Flash interface to work so nicely with all the dynamic data. My hat's off to you all on a job well done. I'll be looking to see what else you add in the future. Good Luck!
Posted by: Nathan Chase at November 11, 2005 04:29 PM
Simple and brilliant!!
Its one of them things you have to tell everyone about!
Almost everyone's been impressed, the playlists seam to occasionally go a bit wacky after a few hours, but that could just be me.
I need never go anywhere else for music! really impressed with the quality of the stream as well, i hear rumours its 128k, but it sounds a lot better somehow.
The interface is just genius as well, the whole package just works as expected.

Been using pandora for months now, and loving it! Especially liking the new ability to go in and tweak previous likes/dislikes. How about seeing some more customizability in the system? What I'd really like to see is the ability to go in and select just WHAT I did and didn't like about a song.

Posted by: Tac at November 12, 2005 02:26 PM
I'm with Jeff Satchwill. Some things such as tempo, major/minor, and variance should come into play, too. Just because I like one band who plays punky piano doesn't mean that I like every whining emo group who uses piano. Or, just because I like a band that happens to have a female lead, it doesn't mean that -every- band must have a female lead.

Pandora is all over the web (blogs, news, etc). Congrats - and I can see why. :)
Is there a link for suggestions?
1. I wish you would support album entries too - so that I could enter albums like "Buddha Bar", etc and also see the album names in the player window.
2. Like someone else suggested - a countdown timer, maybe.
3. Ability to rate songs in the favorites list - and ability to play them together :) teehee
4. Ability to display how much a station of mine is 'trained'.
5. I don't get results when playing a station from a song (but thats understandable).
I love this site - and I am going to recommend this to all people I know.

Hi.
Nice program.
som ideas:
-US zip code? I don't even live there....
-faster server, it's soooo slow
-"I like this song, but not right now"
:-)
Posted by: zyp at November 14, 2005 09:17 AM
Yes, the recently occuring server hiccups are a bit annoying. The music plays for 25 seconds, pausing 5 seconds, playing another 30 seconds, pausing again, playing 10 seconds... Though I'm pretty confident they'll have it fixed soon.
Posted by: england at November 14, 2005 09:53 AM
We're working hard (24/7) at bringing more capacity online. The launch has pushed a tremendous number of new listeners our way and we are straining a bit under the load. We're 100% focused on this and we're confident we'll have it licked this week. Thanks for your patience... and for coming to listen.

Wonderful service and UI (openlaszlo?) - I recently subscribed and I'm glad I did. Already been buying more music as a result!
Please do address the load issues ASAP - The service has been basically unuseable for the last few days - presumably because of increased load and popularity. Congrats, but now is the real challenge for a small web app startup - scale fast enough to not lose half your subscribers.
Keep up the good work!

This is amazing, guys! I just got the link this evening and am incredibly happy that I have a whole new media with which to fuel my music obession; amazing that this program has a set of characteristics that it compares, not other people's opinions like some "other" personalized stations. ...Can't imagine how much work went into this to create such a complete database. My thanks to you guys!!

I'm lovin' this service. One suggestion for Nick Dima or any others looking for a master station: what I did was just to great one station ("Master Station") and "Add more music to this station" until I had entered all of my other stations. It's nice; the variety is great, and still related to what I like (even if it was a little work intensive to create).
One request for an upcoming version, I've played around with the favorites some, and much enjoyed that the music I liked was saved somewhere. However, in the process I found that if I deleted a station, any songs I added to my favorites from that station disappear. Just because I've reorganized my stations doesn't mean that the songs I loved from a now nonexistent station are now meaningless to me. If the songs could stay in favorites foregoing any station, that would be great.
Thanks for the time and effort you've put into such an amazing service.
Posted by: Assika at November 15, 2005 04:06 PM
Thank you! I usually have a hard time finding songs I like because my tastes are so different from my friends. I found out about your service today and already am starting to make up a shoping list for next time I hit the cd store.
One thing I found, Pandora is missing most songs from musicals (both broadway and movie musicals). This also include songs from Disney movies, which are a guilty pleasure of mine.

I'm finding it kind of odd that Pandora is now available for free, ad-supported, yet it's still open to US residents only. If there's no creditcards , bills, etc, involved, just ads, why can't Pandora be made open to people from other countries who long for next-generation radio at least as much as their US brothers?
Posted by: Frank Quist at November 16, 2005 08:17 AM
Frank,
We'd like nothing more than to open up things and let folks from all over the world listen. The issue is copyright and licensing. To make Pandora available outside of the US, we need to setup appropriate music licensing. As it turns out, this is a hugely complex process with many, many different parties involved and it's different in every country. We're working on it, but right now we just can't offer the product to non-US residents and still ensure that all the right people are compensated. Ours is a company of musicians and it's really important to us that everyone is given their due when folks listen to Pandora. We'll keep working on bringing Pandora to as many countries as possible, just as fast as we can.

excellent excellent excellent program!
in comparison with utilities such as last.fm, which suggest artists based on user's tags (of which there are obviously more "rock", "indie", "mellow", "punk", etc. than anything else) this program is incredible. i love listening to a radio station that has a great variety, yet is also completely user defined. and the fact that starting up is so simple just makes it even better.
thank you, you wonderful people.

Another suggestion: Always remember if I've marked a song as "I Like It" and display that upon a repeat listening. I can't remember all the songs I've given the thumbs up but I'm sure I've done that multiple times for the same song.
Posted by: Jeff Schiller at November 16, 2005 02:41 PM
zyp: "I like this song, but not right now"
You can do this by selecting "I Like It" and then hit the "Fast Forward" button.

One final comment: Some more "Live" music from published concerts (i.e. non-bootlegs) would be great!

Just discoverd this today, and almost didn't go to class. I have told everyone I have run into today about this, and it's simply amazing. I have been enlightened by new bands, and new styles all day, and dont intend to stop. A question though: Is it possible to display on the website all the of the charactersitics you make when decoding the "genome"? Because I would really love to know what Tonality means, sounds cool. I do beleive that this is by far the greatest thing I have ever seen on the Internet. Mad Props. Only one word can describe this. BRILLIANT! :)

Great service thus far, but it would be great if you could work w/ either Wikipedia or AllMusic to offer some background info on the new bands we're discovering through Pandora.
When I find that absolute gem - a band that feels like I've been listening to them for years, I'd like the instant gratification of being able to learn more about their background, members, etc.
Posted by: Anthony at November 17, 2005 07:03 AM
Would also be great if you could automatically rate a song as a Thumbs up if we add it to our Personal Faves list. Not essential at all, but it's kind of an explicit endorsement when I add something to a Faves page.

Tom, could you provide a service whereby we can get emailed when Pandora becomes available in any given country? I'm in the UK and would love to use Pandora. Finding a zip code I can use is easy (why not use IP geocoding?), but I'd rather play it by the book. I don't mind waiting and appreciate the complexities, but how will I know when you get it going?

and this is just the same!
when i go gigging, and just find this GEM of a piece, i just... you want so much more of it, and its hard to find and explore this kind of music. but... this just is AMAZING! expand musical horizons! discover artists ive never heard of, but are just so good!

Just a suggestion, do you have any plans on adding a most popular search option (song, artist...)?
It would be a good way to see favorites from other users and make a selection from different kinds of music.

Wonderful service. I would be very glad if I could enjoy it in Linux. Firefox+flash 7 here, but no way to listen anything :-(
In the Windows machine at work runs fine, nevertheless.
Thanks for the service. It is amazing. Hope to be Linux compatible soon :-p

Wow, what an awesome concept. I've just started listening, but I love it already!
I am intrigued about your categorization methodology. I'd love to be able to see a visual representation of it, perhaps like www.music-map.com, but with the deeper depth of insight that you guys have. In particular, it would be pretty cool to see the "degrees of separation" between my stations, and who else is between them.
This is the kind of place that I could lose myself in for days at a time. Alas, I gotta work, and my company doesn't take kindly to employees streaming audio through the firewall. I guess I'll stick to listening at home.
Sure wish I could take you guys along on my MP3 player, but I guess that's what allofmp3.com is for ('course, I wish they had your depth of music). Actually, it would be pretty cool to use your knowledge to construct playlists in Media Player for songs I already own. That way, I could sync the playlist to my PDA without spending so much time manually buidling them. Could you do some thinking about it?
Thanks,
Chip

I don't know the reason, but Pandora seems to work now under Linux. No changes in configuration. Mistery...

I really love Pandora, although I've just discovered this site 2 hours before.

I also had a hard time to set it up under linux. I finally got the trick (in Debian):
ln -s /usr/lib/libesd.so.0 /usr/lib/libesd.so.1
Hope it works for you!

I look forward to a true worldwide release. :D

This site is wonderful, I have never seen a more useful, accessible and helpful site out there. A sort of cooperation between artists requiring publish and the user wanting artists with good music.
I only hope that at no point some stupid record company won't force nobody away from this great utility. Thanks alot, you guys.

Damn you! I've spent all night (and most of the day) listening to Pandora when I should have been working/studying!
EXCELLENT APP! Not to compare it to N@p$t3r, but I remember what it was like the first time I used it in 1999 (I now have a much better understanding of copyright ;-) ).....I just listened to everything I could get my hands on.....this is even better! I don't have to sort through much junk! It is a much more efficient way to find new music!
The only thing it is missing is some sort of neutral rating...I may not hate the song, but I may not want to sit through it.....the lyrics may suck, but everything else is right up my alley...I just end up not rating those tunes...A sideways thumb would do...Also, AllMusic / Wikipedia would be a very welcome addition. I keep going there to research these artists...hence the total lack of productivity today! A Mac Widget is also an excellent idea!

Hey,
I'm a french guy, just discovering your job and... i'm simply amazed about this... Speaking about your website all around me, just saying "gon on this website and try, I won't say one more word about it" Everytime, it was the same answer "Amazing, wonderfull, great". Why? Just 'caue before www.pandora.com we needed to prospect on the web, and cd sellers about rare things, unknown...now I've at home a website wich make me listen new stuffs... more "all around the world" stuffs...
So... again, you did a great job, keep going, share music

Amazing service.. one aspect that might help your Electronic/hiphop catalog is cataloging DJs as well as artists. Djs generally are the best method I have found for connecting the dots stylistically between obscure artists. And since electronic artists are so prone to have multiple pseudonyms it must make the artist backend management nightmarish. Whereas if you tagged a DJs style and then were able pull their tracklistings it would give you a great associative style array to apply to the artists in their playlist.

Just found out about Pandora today and I'm hooked. I'm a music freak and this service has put me in total aw. It really does understand the "genome". I've found tons of new bands and artists and you guys are going to damage my wallet perminantely. I've also become a missionary. I can't understand how the hell are you able to do this for free. But as soon as you get the ad-free service up, I'll get it just to support you.
Pandora, AMG and iTunes. The holy trinity....
Posted by: Probe at November 23, 2005 11:55 AM
I found the website on fark. Since people complain 100 times more than they compliment, I'd like to go on record as praising you for not editing the music for profanity. I also am very happy that I can use this on linux (otherwise I couldn't listen at work at all).
It is a very good site, and I just hope some greedy business man doesn't take hold of it. Thank you very much.

I met Michael at CMJ and have been a big fan of pandora ever since. I encouraged my dj's at the radio station to use it to expose themselves to even more music. Lots of improvements in this version, and i'm excited for the future.
One suggestion:
it's kind of a pain to have to type my whole email adress each time i log in. could we have a username instead?

This site is unbelievable! Your methodology of defining style by function over form is a stroke of pure brilliance. You have hit my metal and underground techno tastes squarely on the head of the nail. Thank you!!!!
One small suggestion: how about putting comedy material in the mix? Perhaps song parody ala Weird Al or Barnes & Barnes?
Posted by: John at November 24, 2005 07:37 PM
So .... is there any way this can be on satellite radio? Have you guys considered partnering with Sirius or XM, or is that technologically impossible. How cool to carry around my own personal radio station where ever I go since they have those little portable satellite radios now. Of course, I should be simply satisfied with what you've given us. This is a brilliant innovation, the next big thing since the ipod and itunes, and perhaps just as revolutionary. Be sure to let us know when we can buy stock in this.

Is it at all possible in the future to have an option to pay, say, a monthly subscription to the site and be able to download the songs we like (with a limit set for dollar amounts - like $20 a month gets you 20 downloads and $50 a month is unlimited, or something)?
That would be amazing.

Finally, the box has been opened and with it, the hope of having access, at last, to stations of personalised music; your own taste, your own music. Just wonderful, a dream just a month ago.
Carry on with it =))
Posted by: Sirio at November 29, 2005 02:08 AM
Hi,
Apologies if this is mentioned as a request somewhere... It would be really cool to remove a song from a radio, not affecting the selection behaviour, just so that you don't hear it all the time ie. You can customly remove tracks you hear too often - just so you can keep your radio fresh.
Also, maybe a voluntary form when you say you don't like a track - bringing up the songs genome so that you can say "songs perfect, except I would like to remove the vocals attribute".
Otherwise, stunning software guys!

First of all I have to say that the idea of Pandora is great, and it is a great to promote other unknown artists by style, etc. but to me it seem a little too much to get the Backstreet Boys on a station where I'm programming stuff like The Cure, Catherine Wheel, The Church, Blur, Ride? How do you go about suggesting stuff? and when I try to skip it I get a message that says:
"Unfortunatelly, our music licenses force us to limit the number of songs you may skip each hour. Sit back and enjoy the music for now..."
There's NO WAY that I'm gonna sit back and enjoy the Backstreet Boys.
Oliver.

Posted by: rob at December 1, 2005 03:32 PM
The service totally rocks. I have found a ton of new artists to research. I did think of one cool feature that would be a nice to have, a way to merge stations. There is already a branch option by making a new station from a song, but it would be nice to be able to merge stations in an automated way also. I would also love to see what weight each attribute has on a station, but that may be a bit obscure for the masses.

If there's a nobel prize for music services, I command it be awarded to Pandora!
What I'm most excited about is that this service (which is already blow-u-away fantastic) has so much potential for improvements! I hope that potential is capitalized upon...
Just from skimming over the posts so far, and thinking a little...
1) Improve the rating system... e.g. an 'n-star'-based "algorhythm", something more of a continuum than the current 'good or bad'/'keep or don't keep'.
2) You already have this highly-structured 'music genome' classification system based on all this musicology DNA... but I think you HAVE to pair this up with a completely unstructured song-tagging system, ala del.ic.ous, flickr, and last.fm (which was also new to me!). Let the community contribute! Think of the possibilities for advanced search, setting up your playlist 'rules', etc!
3) RSS Feeds for user favorites, etc, also ala del.ic.ous.
4) Some form of out-of-browser player module, widget, or whatever. Or even better, wouldn't we love to see this cleanly integrated into iTunes radio, winamp radio, or name-your-player!
5) A compiled engine we can download and run against our own music libraries!!!
soooo... I hear your hiring! ;]

I just discovered this site am not only very impressed with the Music Genome Project in general, but the way you've integrated the compiled information into a very useful(and free)personalized, streamed, online music station.
The seperate window/control-panel would def. make it even more user friendly.
I've already told a few friends about this site and am going to email the link to my contact list.
Again,THANK YOU!

Your system doesn't know Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart?
He's that young longhaired upstart from Germany that's been "rockin' em" with that weird sounding music recently.
You really ought to listen to some of it.
Sounds like he just might be destined for greatness.
But then, what do I know?

Hey its not good enough to have 'like it'/ 'don't like it'. Sometimes I 'like it but am not in the mood for it' but don't want to give it a thumbs down?
What is a girl to do?
I need a third option. 'In the mood to skip'?
All the above means I love it but want it better, quicker, personalised more.

Suggestion: I can scroll back to take actions regarding recently played songs; how about letting me scroll forward to do the same with the next few songs coming up? If I hate the next song, for instance, let me say so now rather than playing it and having to count it against how many songs I can skip.

This Pandora thing it's just great. I work at the Santa Fe Institute on models of social learning and I wonder what is the algorithm you use to mould the station to the listenerīs preferences.
You know what you could do guys, you could add the option of merging stations. That would go along with the genetic approach you seem to follow.
Best,

Totally Awesome !!!! I just started listing an LOVE IT !!!!! I'm already emailing friends.....
Feature suggestions:
1) Some way to make requests like: "Play something a little faster, or slower, harder or softer, more vocal, less vocal, etc."
2) Allow the user to give a number ranking, to help guide the play list. For example: I give that song an 8 out of 10, the last was a 6, etc. Then play the higher rank one more often ( or the songs like it ).
3) Buttons on the main page for quick Thumbs-Up / Thumbs-Down, without having to click "Guide Us" each time.
Excellent work !!!!!
Thanks !!

I wonder if you guys can link Pandora with Last.FM? I think Last.FM and Pandora are the most 2 interesting music websites online. I have about 10,000 tracks played and recorded by Last.FM and I truely want to save the recomended tracks by Pandora to be saved in Last.FM.
I know this is not technologically challenging, as Last.FM already provide the web service. So why don't we just connect these great 2 services together?
My rationale: the more you listen on Pandora, the better the recommendation, the more variety of songs and bands you discover and saved to your Last.FM history. Thus everyone wins.

I really like the depth/quality of the library.
The only thing that drives me crazy is the player flash based interface. It may work fine on a PC or MAC- but I have yet to get it to work on any of my high end PDAS.
Even the opera based flash browser in my shiny new Nokia 770 couldn't handle the page- so no portable music for me - :(
