It's the most wonderful time of the year

With the holidays fast approaching, we've been getting lots of requests for seasonal music. Tonight we're rolling out an updated version of Pandora that will let you build your very own, personalized holiday stations.

To hear seasonal music on Pandora, just start by entering the name of a favorite holiday song (for example, "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow"). We'll then ask you to pick your favorite version and we'll create a station that will play other similar holiday music. While we're not able to play that exact song immediately, it will play on your station eventually so keep listening!

If you'd rather start from an artist, just enter the artist's name followed by the word holiday (for example, "Nat King Cole (Holiday)"). We'll then use that input to build a holiday station based on the musical qualities of that performer's holiday classics.

We're busy adding more seasonal music everyday, so keep coming back and expect that your holiday stations will improve over the coming weeks.

Thanks for listening, and happy holidays from the whole crew here at Pandora.

I just found your site thanks to Fast Company's article this month. This is awesome, and I've subscribed for a yearl. Let me suggest something that you've probably thought about and that maybe technologically impossible. What if the stations we create were somehow accessible through satellite radio. Now there would be the monster application. If I can create my own station and then carry it with me any where, that would be very cool.

Who knew I could build

Just discovered this site.

I have to say this is the quite simply the most innovative, mind-blowing and brilliantly consumer-centric idea on the Internet since Wikipedia or Google. And you've done a great job with the interface.

Apart from the manual classification, I hope you are mining and correlating all the user +ve/-ve responses to develop even sharper recommendations at the level of individual songs.

Next step: make it a desktop application/widget thingamibob. Make it even easier to skip a song or indicate that you got it bang on. Make me want to listen all day long.

Congratulations. This is set to become the amazon.com of online radio. I hope your cashflow can keep it ad-supported, and let you hang in there until you hit the really big time.

hey man. i've been recomending pandora to all my friends and they dont take a second look at it. The reason is because it doesnt look right. the site needs a new look man. its a music sight and it looks like a vintage wine site... actualy i've seen whine sites that look more retro than this site. The Main Reason For A Change Is Because Alot More People Would Use It!!! Please consider this. Thanks For Readin This. plus I think its great that sum1 finaly made a free music thing. i respect u guys!!!
thanks again.

I'm still shocked with the quality and originality of this product. It's just incredible! 10 points!! I hope this excellent idea doesn't get pursued by record companies as have happened with many other quality products in the past. Keep it up!! Javier from Montevideo, Uruguay.

Posted by: Javier at November 25, 2005 04:25 PM

Someone told me about this site and when I first heard about it I figured it would just be another list of different pre-made playlists to listen to. I was so wrong! This is always the first thing I open when I open the Internet. I love the variety of music and how it never runs out of different, new music for me to check out. Thank You Thank You Thank You!

Posted by: Logan at November 26, 2005 07:32 AM

I have noticed that even over a great deal of time (two to three weeks) I only hear a selection of approximately five to seven songs from the artist I have chosen for the basis of my station.

I wonder if this isn't because you only place the "hit" tracks for each artist into your database?

Nevertheless, I have refined said station to provide me with the greatest selection of music I have ever been treated to, and would like to sincerely commend you for a terrific job well done. Being in its infancy, I am keenly looking forward to advancements of Pandora in the future, and am absolutely confident that you will no doubt deliver.

Keep up the incredible work.

The best project, I've seen and heared for years. My dreams become true [-> http://www.commondesign.de/my-tmorry/].

I would like to have the option, that the music-styles are changing slowly, so that I can discover not just new songs, but also new styles. I know, One of the best things is, that pandora has different categories (vocal) and no common music styles (blues), but ... it would be perfect, so that people can discover music in it's whole spectrum.

Hey guys, I've been using this excellent free service for a few days now, and I'd have to say it's one of the best things on the internet. Keep up the magic and keep on improving! I love it!

Hahaha. I just entered "Christmas Carol" and got Tom Lehrer! Now what was that Nat King Cole song titled then . . .

Pandora is the best toybox.

Thanks.

Just been introduced to Pandora. My first reaction was 'imagine having come up with the idea...how amazing would that be!' Probably only once every decade a new thing comes along that transforms how things are done. Forget iTunes, I think you've just started a new revolution in music! I just tried it out on my Mam and she was well impressed. I LOVE IT!!

Agree with a previous comment...would love to be able to carry it with me when out and about.

Oh yes...the future sounds even sweeter!!

Simply Amazing site, I hate you guys, now I am going to spend 10x more on Itunes...so much for that present for Mom...

Great resource, 11 songs into my channel and I am going go buy 10 songs [I have the 11th ! :)].

I joined up about a week and a half ago... in that time, I've discovered a problem that you may not be able to fix.

GENERIC SONG EVALUATIONS

One creates stations from individual songs, correct? If a station is created, it is because you have the song in your system... correct? Apparently not.

How do I know? Well... after going about 50 or so songs a piece into each list... and the song the station is based on isn't played... and songs in the station start getting repeated... it becomes clear.

The following list of songs don't appear to be in your system, and if they _are_ in your system... they haven't been evaluated correctly, or they just have generic evaluations:

No Way Back - Foo Fighters
Gone Daddy Gone - Violent Femmes
Fascination Street - The Cure
Bone Machine - Pixies
Chapel Hill - Sonic Youth
Orbitals - Acroma
3 Libras - A Perfect Circle
Out Of My Mind - Duran Duran
To The Sky - The Cure

One station, created with Beck's "Missing" actually played "Missing", but then never played anything that sounded remotely similar to "Missing".

There was one station, created with Puddle Of Mudd's "Drift & Die" that played the station song, and actually worked out pretty well... finding and playing similar songs.

---------

Thanks for the site... I believe the concept is brilliant. But it's apparent that some bogus song evaluations abound in the system. When pandora just starts guessing, and I hear anything from Venom to Rick Springfield for the same song, apparently something is not working.

Thanks again. All the best to you.

Wow. This is a spectacular idea and implementation. The website is simple and intuitive and looks great. It's already introduced me to several great new artists I wouldn't have heard otherwise. I just wanted to say that you've done a kick-ass job.

A killer app! Would be lovely if:

* You can control the player with the keyboard, a la itunes.
* You can get a nice gnome applet with this!
* Or a nice mac os x widget :)

Thanks for sharing the beauty with us! :)

Kudos for the pandora's team!

Hi-
Just thought I'd drop a line to say that I absolutely LOVE the sight - this place may get me through finals single-handedly. I've been pimping it out with all my friends, and I'm not usually someone who talks about music because I don't know enough about it.

Please don't ever go to commercials or subscription only! I would, though, pay for a premium account....

LOVE! Happy Holidays!

The best, no exaggerations, site I've ever seen since Google. In fact, it is the google of music sites, with the friendliness of your local record store. Being a music junkie, I am very taken with this idea.

Don't ever go away!

Posted by: J at November 28, 2005 11:30 PM

I love the site. It is amazing. However, I am from England and cannot register because you have to have a zip code.

Does this mean you have to be from the US in order to use the site?

Posted by: Tom Hammond at November 29, 2005 06:09 AM

Fantastic site, and great concept. Congratulations Pandora. Keep it up.

Posted by: Pete at November 29, 2005 09:05 AM

I love the site and have told every single person I know about it. The only thing I noticed is that you guys got rid of the I like it/ dont like it choice. I thought that was a great feature to have to remove unwanted selections from playing again. How's this going to happen now?

Posted by: thaylin at November 29, 2005 11:31 AM

Are there any plans on being able to upload self-made songs, so that people can listen to them if they match their likings?

I think that would be a really cool feature, as it would help independant musicians, giving them the chance of having a broader audience, and listeners can also discover new music.

Posted by: Augusto Ruiz at November 29, 2005 11:55 AM

I was directed to this site from a message board and I have to say this is a very innovative project. It's a shame that i'm in Canada as I can't register at the moment.

I hope that the powers that be can be able to get the liscences needed to allow this service in other countries.

Posted by: Chris F at November 29, 2005 02:50 PM

One awesome feature that could be implemented is actually a split of the "I Don't Like It" option. I'm not going to pretend I know exactly what's going on in your back-end, but here's the idea:

Have a "Don't Like Song" and "Don't Like Style" options. I find that I am ocassionally fearful to commit to the "I Don't Like It" button, because of the potential effects it may have on any upcoming songs I do indeed like. Often enough I find a song I dislike even though I can admit that it was chosen because of similar qualities to my station. Conversely, the "Don't Like Style" would help to refine the station in terms of filtering out certain styles that pop-up during listening. I can also understand that this feature may require greater client-side consideration than the current system, and can see why one might be wary to implement it. Nevertheless...

In line with this thought, I was wondering: are the "Like" and "Don't like" found in the "Guide Us" menu are any different than the ones found in each song's menu?

Once again; awesome work guys.

Posted by: Kyle at November 29, 2005 06:09 PM

First of all, great web app. Its obvious the makers have spent a lot of time on this and they love what they do. Very fun to to listen and learn..

One feature that I think would be really fun would be the ability to use musical style as jumping off point in addition to song and artist. The different styling descriptors you read when the system starts playing a song could be used as criteria.

I think that would be a fun way to go about things as well. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for the service!

Incredible! The biggest and brightest thing on earth for music lovers. After more than 20 years of listening, buying, downloading, djing, discussing music you've got me stunned and addicted. I promise to spread the word in "old Europe" (and the new one, of course!) so you'll not "die tryin'". Keep it up!!!

Posted by: winnie at November 30, 2005 02:37 AM

On my previous post I made a mistake in saying that the liek it/don't like it thing wasn't there anymore. DOH! I was listening to a friends station so of course I couldn't change the playlist... silly me. On another note one thign I did notice is that I seem to get a lot of 80's hair metal music when I in no way selected that. So if anyone selects things like Primus, Stone temple pilots, and Red Hot Chili Peppers beware the hair.. metal!

Posted by: Thaylin at November 30, 2005 08:31 AM

i love this site!!
and its excellent advertising for the artists, i still love buying cd's and have picked up 3 new ones since listening here, music that i haven't heard on the radio so maybe wouldn't ever have been exposed to.
thank you!

How about an option to enter something like
Artist Name (song)
And then it would show you a list of songs by that artist and let you check off the ones you like? The reason I ask is because sometimes I know that there is a certain artist that has done songs I like and songs I really don't. For example I tend to dislike most really slow songs, and some artists do both fast and slow songs, and I may only want to hear the fast ones.

And that brings up another thought - a previous poster suggested that you have check boxes for "don't like song" and "don't like style" - I would also suggest you may want to consider buttons for "too slow" and "too fast", which would basically mean "I don't want to hear anything by this artist that is as slow or slower (fast or faster) than the current song." This would only work if you have songs rated by approximate beats per minute, of course.

Posted by: Anonymous Poster at November 30, 2005 02:36 PM

I just read about your site. I've known about it for about 5 minutes and it's already one of my top 5 favorite things on the internet. Thank you so much for executing such a fantastic website AND for making it free. Keep up the excellent work!

Posted by: Min at November 30, 2005 03:42 PM

I wonder why don't I have an rss feed for my Pandora favourites? Rss feeds for my stations? Public/Private feeds?

Why not give me the chance to post links to my Pandora station on my blog so other Pandora users can see what I'm digging and vote my stations up or down the Pandora Pop charts?

Since its all about the culture of entitlement these days why not make the pie bigger and give me a slice of it anytime a listener of my Pandora station buys from itunes or amazon through me? I could always add them one by one to my blog side bar eventually with my own amazon or itunes affiliate code anyway?

http://www.payattentiontome.com

Let's discuss :)

Posted by: stealbelow at November 30, 2005 04:34 PM

You know, a nice improvement for me would be to see EVERY one ofthe classification criteria a song fits into, and have generally more control over what songs it picks, because untill I spend a couple hours narrowing down and weeding out songs which are "related" to my choice (usually a band) I get crappy songs all over the place. that, and Aphex Twin seems to get a great many extremely minimilistic set of songs -.-.

That said, you need WAY more IDM, such as The Flashbulb, and so on, you also REALLY need to make an exact "Metal" and "Nu-Metal" genre and have an option to flag a song in accordance to which it is, because using basically any Metal genre band/song will get tons of nu-metal, and that is something I personally despise. I should be able to flag songs under a specific genre myself, as well, so i have better control over which things it gets accepted by, and also have the ability to suggest, and see a lits of suggested songs/artists, and possibly a status on which are in the process of being checked, and so-on.

Generally, I'm looking for MUCH better control over which song gets to be played, and such.

With all that said, I LOVE this thing! Seriously, I love listening to this, because it comes up with some interesting stuff. The next step is to include super-sub-genres and have a pannel of people selected to review songs and place them properly into exact niches, which would be useful for flagging a station to listen to stuff mostly in certain genres, and to avoid stuff in certain genres alltogeather. an example would be something like wanting to listen to say, molodic death metal, power metal, and epic metal only, and to have selections from those genreas only which are closely related sound-wise to the originating band/song. I've got a sstation based on Iced Earth, and after the first song (which was Wolf by Iced Earth) I never heard another one, and now it's completely away from Iced Earth and more into general metal, and the odd nu-metal-ish song.

Sorry for the huge post, and props again for an AWESOME site (though I agree the site could get a different look, or even better, a bunch of selectable skins!!!)

Posted by: Bobbias at November 30, 2005 06:57 PM

All I can say is THANK YOU! The quality of the music is amazing...I believe this to be probably the best thing I've ever discovered on the net.

Well done!!

You guys are awesome!!

Posted by: Carly at December 1, 2005 10:43 AM

Nailed it in one!

I didn't even see this post at first, but I thought "I wonder if Pandora can give me some Christmas Music?" I went and typed in "O tenenbaum" and selected the one by the Vince Guaraldi Trio, and I've been enjoying the station all morning.

That rules. Thanks.

Posted by: Chris Owens at December 1, 2005 10:48 AM

Another thing you need is a way to flag songs that are mis-labeled or defective in some way. For example in the last 30 minutes, it has played "River Deep, Mountain High" by the Supremes TWICE (once it said "by The Supremes" and the next time it said "feat. The Supremes") and then it played a version of Gene Chandler's "Groovy Situation" with a vocal introductory that was most certainly NOT part of the original song (it described someone's homosexual encounter with another man - not graphically, but still an unwelcome addition to the song!). Yesterday there was a song that came up under a particular title, but it sure wasn't that song. And I've heard a few songs with excessive "gurgling" or "swishing", as if they were taken from very old MP3's encoded with the earliest MP3 encoders circa about 1997 or 1998 (most of your recordings are of much better quality, thankfully). So I think you need a way to flag such files so that someone can take a listen and remove, rename, or replace them. Still, this is a great service!

Posted by: Anonymous Poster at December 1, 2005 11:27 AM

You guys are fantastic. Thanks so much for your hard work ... simply the coolest thing out there now.

Posted by: eek at December 1, 2005 11:54 AM

I am in 110% agreeance with the previous comment. This is the only radio site I use now, I love the player, I love the quality, and I love the price! FREE! Thanks so much for offering a service like this, without strings attached! Amazing is the only word.

wow. wow. wow.

First of all, audio quality. Compression is excellent, kills sites like purevolume and LaunchCast out of the water.

Also, as a self-proclaimed music snob, I am also humbled by the amount of great new music. Thank you so much for bringing great songs and great music into my life. There really isn't a better gift to give.

I'm sure you've heard these suggestions before, but it would be great to know if Pandora gets progressively "smarter" as you rate music (like Yahoo's LaunchCast). I'm not sure if this happens in the first place, but it would be great to know that the recommendations will get better.

Really looking forward to my future listening and discovery.

Thanks again and cheers!

absolutely fantastic. i use pandora at the school library religiously.

Something that should be a simple fix that I've had some frustration with:
When the pandora player is minimized in it's stand-alone mode (using FireFox), links from external programs such as Outlook and AIM will usually appear within the restricted-size player window. Could be something as simply as playing with the name of the target window to avoid that.

Keep on keepin' on guys.

First of all I want to congratulate you on creating Pandora. This is what the Internet was designed to do! This is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. To be able to not only play music I have selected as something I like, but to have the program suggest music to ME that is similar to what I have already said I have liked is absolutely phenomenal.

I want to second the suggestion of making a Pandora Mac SO X Widget and something similar for PCs. It would make the music more accessible and offer you a new venue to push your product into the main stream.

One last thing -- I have minimized the player, and it just informed me that it was taking a very long time to decide what song to play next, and that if I got tired of waiting I could refresh the main site. I did what it asked, and Pandora.com will not open and I am getting an error page instead. What happened?

Posted by: Sabrina at December 3, 2005 12:03 PM

Wow!! What an amazing site! I would have never believed such a thing could ever come true. Anyway, I want to make some requests, I dont know if this is the place to do it, but there you go here's two amazing 60s gems:

A friend sent me the link to Pandora. Its a wonderful site. Loving it.

Would be even better if it came as an application that could be downloaded and used like winamp for subscribers, that way it does away with the browser altogether. Also would allow you to add more features.

Either way, I will be tuning in to Pandora ;)
