From The Curators: Your Pandora Guide to Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the somewhat improbable victory in 1862 of the Mexican army over a larger and better equipped invading French force, in what became known as “La Batalla de Puebla,” or “The Battle of Puebla.” The French returned the following year, occupying Mexico for the next three years, but we’ll save that for a different blog.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become a festive celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, which seems to gain in popularity every year. It provides us with a chance to indulge in some of Mexico’s many profound cultural contributions, with music being at top of the list. With this in mind, we at Pandora would like to invite you to give our Cinco de Mayo genre station a spin!

Whether you’re throwing your own party, invading someone else’s pachanga, or just out-and-about enjoying the festivities in your community, we’ve included some Cinco de Mayo essentials for your listening enjoyment.

To get things started, you’ll find some of the classic rancheras of yesteryear with artists like José Alfredo Jiménez, Lola Beltrán and Vicente Fernández, and of course the most celebrated mariachi of all time, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. You’ll also find nostalgic favorites from artists like Los Tigres del Norte, Ramón Ayala, Fito Olivares and Selena.

Cinco de Mayo is very much a Mexican-American celebrated holiday, and if you’re in the mood for some Chicano sabor, artists like Santana, Los Lobos, Malo and War are right there in the mix, ready to serve all your cruising needs.

No fiesta is complete without a good dose of cumbias for the pista! Celso Piña, Grupo Kual and La Sonora Dinamita will have you sweating until Seis de Mayo.

If you’re looking for the top Mexican artists of today, try some of our genre stations like Banda, Cumbia Sonidera, Norteño, Corridos 2013 and Regional Mexican.

Whatever direction you decide to go for El Cinco, make sure to rep the tri-color proudly and celebrate with Pandora. ¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!
