As a college student in the early-2000s I would kill time between classes by heading to the local record shop and scoping the overwhelming batch of new releases. I still remember that killer autumn of ‘03 when The Strokes, Elvis Costello, Belle & Sebastian and Outkast all hit. Many of these songs are still on heavy rotation for me – it’s hard to believe that was ten years ago! The fall of 2013 has the potential to be another memorable year for music across many genres. Everyone from Jay-Z to Jimmy Eat World, Hanson to Daft Punk released new material this year and that’s not it – there is a massive list of artists slated for end-of-the-year releases.
New music is set to drop from some of the industry’s biggest names this year: Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, M.I.A., Drake, Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Keith Urban, Sting, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Cher, Celine Dion, Chris Brown, Pusha T, Future, Kings of Leon, Pearl Jam, Arcade Fire and Arctic Monkeys. Joining this group of heavyweight releases are debut studio albums from some of 2013’s most talked about up-and-comers including Lorde, Haim and Icona Pop.

Every time I hear “1st Of Tha Month” by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, it takes me back to a 1996 family vacation in Florida. Even though it’s been years and my musical tastes have changed, I just can’t shake the feeling that song gives me. Music is known for its ability to transport you to a time and place; it’s likely that if you hear “summer anthems” from past years, you’ll be transported back to that time. It just wouldn’t be summer without a soundtrack.
What will be your soundtrack for Summer 2013? In an effort to unlock some themes for this summer, we’ll take a look at a few of this season’s anticipated releases. How might the “genetic” makeup of this year’s releases evolve your current playlists? Read More →
It’s the time of the year when festival season kicks off and many artists go on tour. Whether it’s under the blazing sun, surrounded by palm trees, in the mountains, or in a large sporting arena, there are plenty of opportunities to experience your favorite artist in person.
This summer, the popular early-90s Britpop movement is revived in full force with some of the genre’s early originators reuniting and hitting the road and festival circuit. Since headlining a show at Hyde Park for the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony, Blur have continued to headline major European festivals and will be back in the U.S. this spring for more! Pioneers of the Madchester movement, The Stone Roses, have also reunited and set out on a world tour with plans of releasing their first album since 1994’s Second Coming.

“Gypsy swinging, serenading, fire-breathing circus freaks” is how this month’s Submission Spotlight artist, Caravan Of Thieves, has been described. Marrying old school gypsy swing and modern folk rock, this band has released two albums independently, with their first submission being added to Pandora in 2009. They have received much praise from Pandora listeners, fans and press for both their unique style of music, as well as their energetic and theatrical live shows.
Formed in Bridgeport, CT by married couple Fuzz and Carrie Sangiovanni, Caravan of Thieves began as a duo, performing in parks and on street corners. Their sound featured a blending of their voices with acoustic guitars, rounded out by various kitchen appliances providing percussive accompaniment.
Along the way they incorporated a violinist and an upright bassist. Drawing inspiration from the raw and charismatic performances of gypsy music and the 1930s swing era, coupled with a penchant for dark and macabre imagery, the lively sounding pop songs they crafted quickly began to resonate with audiences. Hello music fans!
For July’s Pandora Submission Spotlight, I’d like you to meet Brooklyn-based artist Bess Rogers, a self-made, eclectic singer-songwriter who submitted her first album to Pandora in 2009 and continues to be featured prominently on notable singer-songwriter stations as well as her own station.
Bess Rogers was raised in a musically diverse household and grew up listening to Talking Heads and Kate Bush while her mother played Baroque harpsichord. Upon earning her Masters degree in composition, she began recording and performing her own music in addition to performing as a back up singer and lead guitarist for Ingrid Michaelson.
In the course of five years, Bess has released two full-length albums, two EPs, several singles and four independently produced music videos all on her own. Her most recent album, Out Of The Ocean, was entirely funded by her fans via Kickstarter campaign. Her songs have been featured in television, film, and national commercials.
She is currently headlining shows in New York City, has opened for notable artists like Loudon Wainwright III, and continues to tour the U.S. and Europe performing with Ingrid Michaelson’s band. Read More →
