I was going to say in before in my "Track 3" comment but these guys are truly trying to create hip hop's first blues/jazz band. Admitting to the fact that they operate from a basic "melody" and give each musician the freedom to improvise when they perform, is something that no producer has explored with hip hop to my knowledge. Really loving this idea and the fact that they're taking hip hop to another level. N.E.R.D watch out!!!!

I am down for this type of music, but don't understand the interview. You cannot say you are a mix between a band and DJs. This is a DJ thing and a DJ thing only. Which isn't a bad thing, but you can't state you are a band, while lacking instruments. These are just beats and remixes. Sorry to over analize, but it is something that annoyes me. Yeah, I know, what is a band? IMO it isn't anything that doesn't contain instruments - while loaded up with laptops and mouses.

at this point though a laptop and interface is an instrument. maybe another question to ask beyond what is a band is what is an instrument. the basic concept seems that you physically move and sound happens, such that triggering with your finger would constitute this action. granted this is something of a hybrid mixture between dj and established concepts of a band especially when looping is involved but does this argument change the music and experience anyways? i think not.

I think the dj and live band thing is 100% correct. They aren't the "traditional" dj, these guys actually write their own music, they dj their own creations and rewrite their creations on the fly live, outside of the vocal tracks that may or may not be lifted. you won't hear a sugar hill gang or little richard.
