Our New Season Begins Wednesday, March 5th

podcast_microphone.jpgI am pleased to announce that the new season of "Pandora Presents..." begins on Wednesday, the 5th of March.

In the meantime, we really need to build up our subscriber numbers. These are FREE subscriptions, and will continue to be free, but our sponsors need to see that there is interest in these original shows.

Please encourage your friends to subscribe, eh? It costs them nothing, but justifies our production budget.

In the meantime, the 30 shows from 2007 are all available for streaming or for download.

And while I have your attention:

What would you like to see me do differently? How can I improve our shows?

Peace,
Kevin

Hi Kevin, the shows are really good as they are. Lots of variation, well structured, ... just keep on doing them! I really look forward to the new shows!

I absolutely love these podcasts! As an aspiring artist, learning more about the music--especially for free and at my own pace--is so valuable. thanks for doing them, Pandora.

I'd love to invite my musician friends to check them out, too. Do you have an e-postcard or something I can send out?

I would like to hear all gospel music such as Ernie Haase, cathedral quartet, old friends quartet associatediwth Bill Gaither, statler quartet and oak ridge boys
Thank you. We've been enjoying your music, but it would be nice to hear these particular quartets
and gospel country singers such as elvis Presley,Randy Travis etc.

no i realy do love the good job you are doing!!

I love the audio show -- keep up the good work! I have been a little annoyed waiting for new issues however. I haven't noticed any official pattern for new releases - such as the first and third week in a month. Sometimes a month goes by in between new episodes. Additionally, I would expect an audio show and instead find a new "Great Places..." show, which I don't have a strong interest in. Perhaps you could release them as separate shows and keep the release of the audio shows a little bit more predictable.

I LOVE THE VARIETY OF THE MUSIC AND ARTISTS. I PREFER THIS OVER THE RADIO ANYDAY, KNOW ANNOYING COMMERCIALS AND TALKING.

I love Pandora and have told my family and friends about it. Getting to hear great new music without having to switch stations whenever a commercial or bad song comes on is just unbelievable. At the same time, my library of favorite music continues to grow. Thanks!

Hello

This is one of the best podcasts ever. Really high production quality and fascinating content. But why is it only 5 minutes long? The obvious way to improve it is to make it longer. Much longer. Like 30 or 60 minutes. That would be awesome!

Posted by: Ed from New Zealand at February 8, 2008 02:02 PM

I would like to see many more of the Music Theory podcasts. Maybe even a little longer duration. Tell us more about music and how it's created and structured.

Kevin...in the mind of this 62-year-old woman, you have performed an astonishing feat in producing Pandora! Thank you for making my computer time so much more enjoyable!

I didn't know these shows were available, been with Pandora for a year or so and still don't know how to look for, or get 'em! - So maybe a bigger attention getter on these shows when we tune in to Pandora for music?? - Thanks for being here for us all!! - pat

Posted by: patrick at February 10, 2008 09:31 AM

I love all of the episodes: I really look forward to getting them on my iTunes subscription! However, whenever you refer to musical theory, I'd like it if you'd give brief references to past podcasts that talked about them, or even helpful blurbs on the accompanying web page. I agree with Trish that you should advertise the podcast a little more (I don't know how many people click on "Pandora Presents..." on the main page).

Keep creating,

Hello, all! Thanks for the supportive messages.

Ryan: We are splitting the audio shows and the videos into two separate RSS feeds starting in March. "Pandora Presents...the Musicology Show" will be its own subscription, separate from the venue videos.

Kagitsune: I'll refer back to past podcasts more. We also have a cross-referenced glossary that goes term by term.

Posted by: Kevin Seal at February 12, 2008 10:41 AM

I am a non-traditional student and absolutely love that fact that I can sit at my PC and do writing assignments, homework, etc and listen to my "chill out" radio (which is New Age and acoustic guitar and piano selections). I've found nothing that parallels to Pandora. Occasionally, the selections veer off course, but after my responses, you bring it right back to the music I prefer.

I'm spreading the word.

Thanks Kevin and associates.

Wake up to Pandora...this could add great value!!! Ever since my friend introduced me to Pandora, Pandora has become the ONLY station played at my parents, brother, sister, and all my friend’s house. Now that we have Pandora every where, wouldn't it be great to wake up to it every morning. I would like to see Pandora creating an alarm system where you could configure your favorite station and set different times.

Thanks, Kevin

Posted by: Kevin at February 13, 2008 02:18 AM

You are doing great. Keep doing your excellent work.

Posted by: Vince at February 13, 2008 01:04 PM

Thanks, guys! We're working on "Building A Song From The Ground Up" (likely a late-March episode), all based on your votes.

"Vocalizing" is on its way as well.

Any ideas of what this show could use? (I'm asking not about Pandora at large, just about this one particular corner of Pandora, "the Musicology Show.")

Posted by: Kevin Seal at February 13, 2008 03:09 PM

I wish there was a way that once you make a musical selection, you could have a "suggestive artist"(like a pull down window), then you could just select a song from the pull down window. My stations are becoming boring, because I just can't think of artist name or songs on my own. I still love the idea and the music. Thank you

Posted by: D at February 14, 2008 01:42 AM

Hey Kevin

Love the format and love the shows I would not change anything but I would love to see more gospelvideos. Keep up the good work and I am telling all friends to sign up. This is absolutely great way to listen music and videos.
Keep up the good work, looking forward to March.
Peace.

I don't know how I ever got by without Pandora's music. The Denver area's radio stations are the absolute worst. You are the absolute best! I am simply mad about Pandora! Thank you, thank you, thank you for providing such a wonderful means of listening to great music all the time.

Posted by: Marnie at February 15, 2008 12:22 PM

Thanks for listening everybody!

Adam: videos of home recording and big-studio setups, check. We're debuting a new video show called "Studio Stories" on Wednesday, March 5. Keep an eye for it.

Marnie: I'm sorry that Denver's terrestrial stations are not providing what you want/need. Thanks for finding us.

D: Have you tried making a song-based station? That always helps for me.

Kevin C: We don't host artist videos yet. Someday, I hope.

Charles: I love the big-band era too, even though I'm a bit newer to it. (smile.) Pandora seems to do especially well with swing music.

Anybody else?

I am "blown away" by all of the research time and efforts put into Pandora Radio. I am getting "long in the tooth" age-wise and have been a record/CD collector and musician 'wannabe' all of my life. Those of you at Pandora Radio find your quest truly to be a labor of love or there would not be such access to all of this music. You are to be commended for a brilliant concept in promoting all of these musical genres. May you persist and prosper in this noble cause!

I see a lotta people asking for gosple, how about some gosple blues, like Blind Willie Johnson, may have the wrong name but he sings The soul of a man, If I had my way I'd tear the building down, All God's children have a hard time sometimes, love his voice, anyway I think you're doing a great job and really enjoy the music as well as lessons. How about for those of us who write poetry and never considered putting it to music, how to set the words to music, and also more on the melancholy sounds that are even more dreary than minor sounds but get the pt across w/out words, and also how about some examples w/only music no words and maybe a little on how diff artist write music for movies, like say the Godfather on the DVD they interviewed the 2 composers and they gave little exercpts, it was like a couple of the same songs ran thruout all 3 movies but sometimes very soft, others loud, and sometimes just enough off that it drew your attention cuz it was diff and it could say more than a song w/words when played at the right place in a movie. Other than that not real clear request, keep up the great site. Peace.

Hi, Kevin,

I echo pat in that these shows look fantastic, and this is the first that I have heard of them, despite having used pandora for over a year. I would love to listen at work, but we use PCs, and we cannot install iTunes. Therefore, please make the shows available through Windows media or some format other than podcast, if at all possible. I'm sure your listenership would skyrocket, and your sponsors would be happy.

Best wishes, and thanks.

Posted by: Benjamin at February 28, 2008 07:25 AM

P.S. I just figured out how to download the shows in .mp3 format. Perhaps calling them podcasts and placing iTunes prominently on the home page, which suggested to me that they were only available for those with iPods or iTunes. I think that if you correct this misconception, you will get many more listeners.

Thanks, and good luck.

Posted by: Benjamin at February 28, 2008 07:32 AM

Pandora is a web music miracle! The selections of music are wonderful. I hope you can add some specifically Christian artists and stations in the future. I have not been able to find them in your search files. I listen to you;) Thanks for listening to me.

I like all of these ideas... It's just a question of time. In the meantime, though, tell your friends and neighbors that these free shows exist. We're word-of-mouth at this early stage of development.

Specifically to Benjamin's point -- these shows are available as MP3s, so playable in Windows Media Player or Real Player or whatever you choose.

I tried a podcast once, but had technical trouble. So, I haven't gone back since. but it sounded so interesting. I'm on linux so sometimes I just have to forgo things, like if somethings only tuned for Windows.

Posted by: kdweeb at March 1, 2008 02:00 PM

First of all, I love this podcast. It's always interesting in both topic and presentation and I love learning new things about music. My one complaint is that there are only 16 episodes available in iTunes (on my computer anyway) when there are supposed to be 30. One of these 16 won't even download. Fixing these technical problems would probably increase your listeners. Nonetheless, you're doing a very good job and I can't wait for new episodes.

I'm agree with Leah's post on March 1. I can not find a link to get the 30 podcasts from 2007. Re-subscribing with itunes does not help. I also love podcasts, and I know how much work goes into producing them, but this kind issue discourages subscribers. The podcasts are fascinating. Please make the archives more accessible.

Posted by: Samuel Chorneau at March 4, 2008 04:42 AM

Can one only subscribe via iTunes? I think your effort and show is awesome and would love to support it visibly for your sponsors, but I don't use iTunes.

Posted by: lb at March 4, 2008 06:11 AM

Samuel and Leah,

The easiest way to access the full archives are from our category pages -- on the left-hand side, you can hear each show for free. It's not through iTunes, just directly through our own page.

Cut and paste this into your browser to see the Composition archives, for example:
http://blog.pandora.com/archives/podcast/composition/index.html

LB:
You can use any number of podcatchers to hear the shows. We chose iTunes as the main one to feature just due to its sheer popularity, but any podcatcher will work.

If you go to our RSS feed, you can access the show with other services:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/pandora/podcast.xml

Other podcatchers include Odeo, Juice, Netvibes, and you can subscribe with any of those services for free.

Hi Kevin,

I'm new here, I can't comment on your content yet but I recently received a couple of fragments of music from elsewhere that I like a lot, but I haven't been able to find the group who performs this music.

The music is a kind of modern Gregorian chant, wonderful to my ears.

Would it be possible for me to send you a couple of .wav files for you to play sometime and ask your listeners to help identify the group?

Thank you,

Tom

hi pandora peeps. you were my introduction to online personalized radio listening, (sniff), and even after exploring the rest, i still think you're the best.

the podcasts are awesome. they seem to mainly be directed at new musicians or interested non-musicians, but they still get pretty detailed so even musicians might learn something they didn't know.

questin: what about more cross-culturally educational podcasts? like scale systems from other cultures, or ways that they perceive rhythm? like the salsa one you did, for example. (sorry if this has already been put out there, didn't read whole blog.)

much love,

I absolutely love Pandora. I've had it for a while but this is the first time I've explored the extra features. Though I love all kinds of music, I've been trying to find music that is considered experimental - mostly electronic, but also works by folks like Henry Cowell (from whose work my username came) and John Cage.

BRILLIANT job, all of you! I'm at work now, but I intend to follow your podcasts!

If anyone else there out there is interested in "new" music, I would love to know.

Thank you,

I want to mention that I successfully downloaded all of the podcast episodes through iTunes except for one, The Blues Scale, which failed repeated attempts. However I was able to play The Blues Scale podcast directly from the Pandora website.
