Great Places To See Live Music: Celebrate Brooklyn
|
There's nothing that brings a community together quite like a free music festival, and there's no festival quite like Celebrate Brooklyn, a program of BRIC Arts|Media|Bklyn. Every summer, families in New York are treated to free concerts in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. These shows are not run-of-the-mill freebies, either; these are big-ticket artists such as TV On The Radio, Joan Osborne, the Stills, the Sam Roberts Band and Maceo Parker. Our guest, Celebrate Brooklyn's executive producer Jack Walsh, explains how it works, and how this festival has grown steadily over the course of 30 seasons. |
A special thank you to the artists who let us show excerpts
from their live performances: Joan Osborne, the Stills
and the Sam Roberts Band.

Irving, I'm glad you are getting some joy from Pandora too. I often tell people I envy Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder and Blind Willie Johnson, because I feel they can hear music and feel music at an even deeper level because their sight doesn't get in the way. Sometimes I even try and close my eyes when I play or listen to music and it makes such a difference. Kevin I enjoyed this show and would love to hear music with these accoustics. I grew up in Kansas City and we've got the Starlite Theater where they do outdoor plays in the summer, thus the name, and my mom has always been an advocate for the arts and was very involved in the Lyric Opera and most things musical in the area, so while classical is not my favorite type it probably gave me a good musical background to grow up around it. Keep up the cool variety.

Nice jobs guys. I really admire your concept of music genetics. I'm optimistic that your cocept will become very popular in the near future as it makes it very easy to listen to various types of music without having to worry about anything.
I hope you get more support to and have time to add more music.
Best of luck.

Thanks for being the music library of choice! By choice I mean your choices for my requests are for the most part always right on, especially with all the new bands/artists that my radio scene leaves off the menu. I thank my Lord that you were able to rise above the status quo radio outlets. I love telling others about my new station; Pandora, thanks again! Music . . . heals the soul while elevating my thoughts and spirit. This is God's gift that energizes me with happiness, and soothes me in times of sorrow. It is the fabric of my life

Pandora is a beautiful experience for me. I love being introduced to music I have already loved but hadn't known yet. Pandora in the car would be a dream come true, many people would love to pay for that, me being one. I love the portable phone service now if I could only get that to play through my car stereo that would be even better.

I was raised in Brooklyn, and I loved every minute of my life there. Prospect Park and the ParadeGrounds were favorite hangouts. In the 50's, we used to hand out and sing on the street corners, Rock and Roll and Rythm and Blues. If I had my choice to grow up in any place in the world, I would chose Brooklyn. This concert must be awesome. If I can, I will make it back to attend it. I am 71 years old going on 18 and lovin life.
