Great Places To See Live Music: Great American Music Hall

download

GreatAmerican.jpg Starting as a bordello in 1907, then as a burlesque club, and finally in its present incarnation as the Great American Music Hall, this San Francisco landmark has seen a lot of action. Host Kevin Seal shows you the beautiful theater that has hosted performances by everyone from Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Bill Evans to the Grateful Dead to Rufus Wainwright and the Arcade Fire. Audio expert Lee Brenkman shows us the power behind the sound, and fills in tech dork Xifer Fortier on this room's colorful history.

Guys, you have got to have separate URL's for video podcasts and audio podcasts. I like to listen to podcasts while in the car. To have a great audio podcast suddenly become video was a huge shock in the car, and more than a little useless.

Thanks for the video version, but please separate it from the audio version.

We can definitely do that, Josh. Thanks for speaking up. The audio podcasts return next week, actually, and those videos will soon split off into their own RSS feed. (Likely not next week, but soon thereafter.)

Horray! The Great American Music Hall is an awesome musical venue. I've had the pleasure of seeing many unforgettable performances there. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Secret Chiefs, Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, The Melvins, and so many more. I am lucky to live in the bay area.

Hey, Andy!

I was at some of those shows too! Along with Deerhoof, Rufus Wainwright, Olivia Tremor Control, Bright Eyes... I've seen many, many brilliant shows at the Great American.

Thanks for watching. What are your other favorite Bay Area rooms?

Same to everyone else -- where else should we go?

Thanks Pandora for powering my free MSN Radio and music video selections. What about including
as a topic "Gyros and Gingles for the Gymnasium" -- a music portfolio for exercising, dancing, and/or swaying to help the couchers with those essential moments for fat-burning and anaerobic fitness tasks?

What a gorgeous and elegant building to hear and see music. I love that you showed some of the architecture and even explained the period and style. I'm sure bands who play there the first time are in awe as I would be.
