Inside The Collection: Weekly Curator Picks

Some of this week’s newest music and genre station highlights on Pandora, fresh from our curation team!

Artist Debuts

Puss N Boots

Screen Shot 2014-07-28 at 9.41.20 AMAfter playing live together since 2008, Norah Jones (remembered for her smash hit album Come Away With Me), Sasha Dobson and Catherine Popper have at last taken their collaboration into the studio. Their debut album No Fools, No Fun features a collection of original songs and covers that were cultivated from their live sets, including “Bull Rider,” written by Rodney Crowell and made famous by Johnny Cash. Over the years, they have shared the stage with the Beastie Boys on the Get Out The Vote tour and joined Wilco at Madison Square Garden, providing background vocals on “Jesus, Etc.”, of which their own interpretation is also featured on their debut album.

Boogaloo Assassins

Based out of Los Angeles, the Boogaloo Assassins are reviving the classic Latin Soul sounds of 1960′s New York. Their natural ease and flair, coupled with the meticulous attention to detail and authenticity, makes diehard aficionados and record-collector nerds smile from ear to ear. They have played a large supporting role in the 50th anniversary celebrations of the famed New York Latin music label Fania, backing up living legends Roberto Roena and Joe Bataan in concerts from East Coast to West. They first came to our attention as an independent artist submission and their debut release has recently been picked up by non other than Fania Records.

Chris Laker

While many other talented people share his name, writer Chris Laker is the only Chris Laker who is a standup comedian.  This laid-back New Yorker’s demeanor belies the quick wit and energy fueling his punchlines. Laker hosts a standup showcase and panel called  “The Show” at Long Island City’s Creek & Cave and has also written for The Howard Stern Show.  Named one of the prestigious Montreal Just For Laughs Festival’s “New Faces” in 2013, Laker’s first album Moments of Greatness covers his questionable employment track record, the quirks of Canadian money and the unnerving realities of raising children to adulthood.

Breaking Southwest

What makes the music in Nashville the television series often even better than that of Nashville the city is that T-Bone Burnett and Buddy Miller wrote and produced the songs for the series. Breaking Southwest is a Texas based country-pop trio that sounds like they have much in common with Nashville the television series.

New Music

DuskyLove Taking Over EP

London-based Dusky has always produced music utilizing a less-is-more aesthetic. With the Love Taking Over EP, Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman explore the worlds of deep house and classic techno by juxtaposing the mechanical and soulful, harkening back to artists like Jeff Mills and Carl Craig. They’re supporting the self-released album with a busy touring schedule, so you just might see them at a club (or rave) near you!

RaffiLove Bug

Screen Shot 2014-07-28 at 9.52.55 AMA celebrated and beloved icon for young listeners, Raffi has returned with his first album of children’s songs in twelve years since the release of 2002’s Let’s Play. He recorded most of Love Bug in his living room with themes centered around love ( “Love Bug” ) and chores (“Mama Loves It”), in addition to paying homage to recently departed folk-music icon Pete Seeger on the track “Pete’s Banjo” and human rights icon Nelson Mandela on “Turn This World Around.”

MadlibRock Konducta Part 1 & Rock Konducta Part 2

Madlib returns to the Beat Konducta series with a psychedelic take on instrumental hip-hop beats. Rock Konducta Parts 1 & 2 are stocked full of his signature off-kilter, abstract production.  The term “Rock Konducta” comes from Madlib producing hip-hop instrumentals using rock ‘n’ roll and Krautrock samples. Enjoy a trip through the dusty crates of this influential producer with these two releases on Madlib Invazion.

Genre Station

Rap Trap

Pandora is cooking up Rap Trap, a new station to hear the classic and latest Trap Hip-Hop music from artists like Gucci Mane, Lil Boosie, T.I., Future, Juicy J, ASAP Ferg and more. 808 and high-hat trills dominate the sound from Atlanta to the Bay.
