It’s the time of the year when festival season kicks off and many artists go on tour. Whether it’s under the blazing sun, surrounded by palm trees, in the mountains, or in a large sporting arena, there are plenty of opportunities to experience your favorite artist in person.

This summer, the popular early-90s Britpop movement is revived in full force with some of the genre’s early originators reuniting and hitting the road and festival circuit. Since headlining a show at Hyde Park for the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony, Blur have continued to headline major European festivals and will be back in the U.S. this spring for more! Pioneers of the Madchester movement, The Stone Roses,  have also reunited and set out on a world tour with plans of releasing their first album since 1994’s Second Coming.

If you’re a country music fan, rest assured plenty of your favorite artists will be dusting off their boots and playing major cities and festivals all spring and summer long. Watch for artists like Carrie Underwood, Jake Owen, Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Billy Currington, Montgomery Gentry and Jason Aldean. Lady Antebellum will perform at several country music festivals before taking a brief hiatus as lead singer, Hillary Scott, is expecting her first baby this summer.

With plenty of dance and electronic music gatherings during the festival season, you’ll find artists like Armin Van Buuren, Bassnectar, David Guetta, Hot Chip  and Crystal Castles  making appearances throughout the summer.  House DJ Kaskade, surprised live audiences by debuting his new “Atmosphere” and has kicked off his ten year anniversary tour, returning to the nightclubs that he played on his rise to stardom.

From small clubs to huge arenas, your favorite rappers and hip hop artists are gearing up to hit the road this summer. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are bringing “Thrift Shop” to the live stage and setting out on a North American tour. Also touring is one of hip hop’s most buzzing newcomers Trinidad James who has made waves with his funky sound and style on tracks like “All Gold Everything.”  In addition, expect some full-out parties from A$AP Rocky (with Rihanna), Kendrick Lamar, Machine Gun Kelly, Big Boi and Pitbull.

If you were unable to score tickets to that enormous music festival in the desert, you can still catch all the major indie and alternative bands on the summer tour circuit. Tegan and Sara are setting off on a huge summer tour co-headlining with pop band Fun. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs will also be on the road this summer supporting the release of their latest album Mosquito. English math rockers Foals will make major U.S. city stops this summer, along with opener Surfer Blood. You might also catch bands like Franz Ferdinand , Violent FemmesDinosaur Jr., Local Natives, Youth Lagoon, and The xx,with Grizzly Bear and Portugal. The Man.

Also making appearances in major cities and festivals include: The Black Keys, Mumford & Sons, The Avett Brothers, Iron & Wine, The Rolling Stones, Alice CooperMetallica, Phish, Gavin DeGraw, Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, Justin BieberKelly Clarkson, Jane’s Addiction, Hawthorne Heights, Bowling For Soup, Motion City Soundtrack, Wayne Shorter, Aaron Neville, B.B. I dig all things ‘60s: garage punk, obscure psych, Stax and Motown soul stompers. My first CD purchases were REM’s Out of Time and Boyz II Men’s Cooleyhighharmony. I still own both! I’m pretty much immersed in music – hitting up local record shops, catching live shows at crusty dives, and DJing around town at various venues and bars.

"Which concert or festival are you are most excited to attend this spring/summer?" The Chicago BluesFest and Chicago JazzFest. Sadly, the only two music festivals remaining, due to budgetary cuts. Used to go to Gospel Fest, Country Fest and Celtic Fest but they disappeared a couple of years ago and are now absorbed into Taste of Chicago, which I don't attend. But YEAH, to the two remaining festivals. :)

I really miss going to a festival, sunny warm day, good music, good friends, crazy experiences around you and of course a cold beer. Especially after the hard winter we had this year. May the festivals of 2013 be blessed with lots and lots of sun and no rain!
