Today a bipartisan bill was introduced in Congress by members of the House and Senate called the Internet Radio Fairness Act (H.R. 6480 and S. 3609).

It is a very important bill for Pandora. For the first time since 1998, it will finally bring fairness to the way performance royalties are determined for internet radio.

Pandora pays performers (and composers) for every song that we stream. And we do so proudly. I’m a longtime working musician myself, and supporting musicians is a central principle at Pandora.

However, as a result of legislative and legal strong-arming done over a decade ago by the RIAA, internet radio is subject to its own, very discriminatory standard. The resulting bias is staggering. To give you an idea, last year Pandora paid about half of all its revenue in performance fees alone. In that same year, SiriusXM paid 7.5%. No radio service anywhere in the world pays more than 15% of its revenue in such royalties. The anti-internet bias in federal law is nothing short of absurd.

The Internet Radio Fairness Act will address this discrimination by extending to internet radio the same standard used to determine virtually all copyright rate-setting processes, including satellite and cable radio, allowing us to compete on a level playing field.

Today we begin a grass-roots campaign to pass the Act and correct this discrimination.

This is not a campaign to stop paying royalties, or even to pay as little as possible. We’re just fighting for fairness.

We’ll be reaching out for your support in the coming days and weeks. So if you’re a fan of internet radio and want to lend your voice to our efforts, please keep an eye out for our messages. We would be very grateful for your support.

A summary of the bill and the rates issue can be found here:

Pandora needs to have the petition form already filled out and sent to everyone in an email, so that all they have to do is click "Sign The Petition". This is how "" does it and It will increase the amount of people of will sign the petition.

I LOVE Pandora and I made sure I wrote my representatives. However, I think you should maybe come up with an example of what you want people to write to their representatives. I am an avid listener to Pandora, so I had no problem writing up my own little thing; however, I think you might get more supporters if you give them a pre-written letter that they can just copy and paste. Just put it right up on the main page that you link over to. Just a recommendation. I hope that this bill passes for you guys!!!!

Dear Tim, I've been listening to Pandora since 2008 and I have notice the changes and the growth and I am very proud of you! It's an outstanding business idea and to me it just keeps getting better. I'm a Massage Therapist and I listen to Pandora tuned in to my "Kitaro" station and it's always perfect. I've been a Pandora One subscriber then I left it alone and listened to it with the commercials for a while and just a few days ago I decided to buy PandoraOne after listening to your message and honestly felt like paying twice as much and would do so happily! I pay nearly $15 a month to SeriusXM and because of your cause, I have cancelled my account with them.. It's my way of supporting Pandora. Now Pandora is with me in my car too! :) Good luck with everything and keep up the great work. Get Pandora to Brazil! :-)

I support the Internet Radio Fairness Act 6480 there are people out there that this is what they do listen to radio and why do you want to that this also away from us; We are suppose to be free Americans and every time we turn around the government is wanting to take from us and I myself as a American am tired of it. We the people are standing for some of our rights and saying enough is enough.

I support the Internet Radio Fairness Act, bill number 6480! I love pandora and listen to it for hours everyday. I can find so much music I couldn't find on the radio and CDs. It helps me create my own playlists and knows the music I like. I love it and would be lost without it!!!! Please don't take it away from us!

Thank you; Pandora has made me laugh with the comedy, sing along with songs I haven't heard in years, and play conductor with the classics. You have broadened my musical taste by introducing me to music I wouldn't have heard otherwise, and my family and friends are always talking about new artists and adding to our playlists. We absolutely LOVE Pandora. You have our support.

why does Pandora continually place campaign ads for President Obama, and not show equal time to Gov Romney. if so, how can I be expected to support Pandora , I also am very glad that I have access to such a great musiv medium, but see the obvious Obama victory Fund that must be part of Pandora's fund raising campaign. Just a question! thanks

As a fan of Internet radio, I want to lend my voice to fight for fairness. I believe that supporting musicians is a central principle at Pandora. Without the companies who deliver recorded music to the public, musicians are busking on the street for money. It's a symbiotic relationship. Consequently the anti-internet bias in federal law is nothing short of absurd. It's time for action, not just tea and sympathy. "J'adore PANDORA" Ellie K

Though I HAVE enjoyed listening to Pandora's internet Radio, I DO ***NOT*** SUPPORT THE FAIRNESS ACT BECAUSE IT HAS A VERY NEGATIVE IMPACT ON CHRISTIAN RADIO THAT I VALUE GREATLY.!! (equal time is for politicians! If I want to tune into a particular genre, it doesn't need to be pouted for my family to hear other ideas that I would be condoning by having it on in my home, car or otherwise) ALSO, I NOTICE THAT YOU ONLY RUN DEMOCRAT/OBAMA ADS. WHERE IS THE FAIRNESS THERE...? SAD TO SEE ANOTHER NARROW VIEW FOR THE SHORT TERM BEING SUPPORTED. Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. -Benjamin Franklin I'll go else where for my music and share with all I can the slant supported here. :-( Sad you had to get political here but we all have our beliefs, and I didn't force my on you, but I'm not reserved to voice them when you voice yours.

I definitely will support Internet Radio Fairness Act. If they are charging and unfair amount for a song; Internet radios won't be able to make a profit off of it.

I agree, I have found artists that I would never have discovered without the platform that Pandora provides, why should they recieve a higher royalty rate than if I had heard the song through Sirius/XM? I support IFRA.
