MEETUPS!!!

What a great couple weeks… We had 5 town hall meetings across the country… New York City, Washington DC, Chicago (2), Seattle. What an amazing experience to spend so much time with Pandora listeners… 150 folks showed up for the NYC gathering – funny to think that just a couple months ago there were three… including me! Planning on many more.

New York City (Part 1)
Wonderful evening at NYU’s Stern School. After a fun get together with about 30 students in the school’s great music business program we spent almost THREE hours in a great only-in-new-york-city rowdy town hall meeting with 150 vocal music enthusiasts. Thanks to Jason Hirschorn from MTV (formerly) who joined me about midway through. These are just tremendous learning experiences for us as we hear how people are using and experiencing the service. Really dug the enthusiasm of everyone – tons of great questions, ideas and general commentary about the online radio thing.

Washington DC
Another very interactive evening at American University’s Greenberg Theatre. Joined by David Oxenford and Gary Greenstein, two attorneys who have been in the music rights debate trenches for some time, about 130 DC listeners.
Took advantage of the trip to visit some local music haunts including a local community music school for all ages and skills …the father-and-son-in-the-hallway-waiting-for-the-recital really brought me back…

the cozy Revolution Records (our original town hall meeting host, before we got 200 rsvps!)

2 Days in Chicago
Terrific location at the City Lit community theatre. Kurt Hanson from RAIN joined me for the first of two meetups. Another great set of discussions.
Seattle
Wonderful location – The Experience Music Project, Paul Allen’s shrine to Jimi Hendrix and all things rock and roll (he’s apparently an avid pandora user). About 100 Seattle-ites filled the theatre for a free form Q&A.
it’s really an amazing experience to spend hours talking with folks – where the only point is to share ideas and love of music. Affection for music is a very powerful thing… Really looking forward to lots more of these. We’re going to blanket the country before we’re done…

  1. My wife and I are artists. We use music to inspire us when we are creating. I told her, I wish there was a radio station that just played ambient music that we could paint by…and here you are. It is perfect, inspiring and all we need our music to be. Thank you for such a perfect thing. Jeffrey Foster Thomas

  2. First off, I Love your site. I have recommended this site to so many of my friends and they too love it. What an amazing concept you have working here. To play bands and songs w/ similar tonalities and rhythms and so on so on so on…..its genius. I would just like to say there will never be another site that I will listen to as long as you are around!!!! If I had the experience you are looking for I would definitely work for you. Keep up the AWESOME work and keep me informed if you ever come back to Chicago. I will be there in a drop of a dime!!! Cheers!!!

  3. Have already sent some & will send more stations to family,old friends and old band members -jazz,funk,regae,punk,newwave, dc groove, hip-hop,etc.- Amazing,you have about 90% of everything I searched on!
    Only found 1 drawback so far:The “no back up” thing is a drag. Will find a way around it soon, though- there’s always a workaround. But you’d figure the music biz mucky-mucks would have the smarts to allow a limited number of back ups per session/day/member. Only makes sense, ‘specially if you are hearing a cut for the very first time- that is if they really want you to head to Azon or itunes.
    Oh well, if your roster of major brains couldn’t convince ‘em in the first round ( like to have been a fly on THAT wall) you will get them in the second….or forty-third. Music execs have always been rather slow on the uptake- one of the reasons I got out of the biz.
    Speakin of slow on the uptake, check out WBEZ public radio Chicago, one of the last of the great old fm jazz and worldmusic radio stalwarts, will CEASE ALL MUSIC in ’07 and become talk radio cuz they say thats what the listeners want ( will pay !)) to support. Tory M, station mgr, and the gang obviously never learned to “listen down” as my old concert band Prof Schroeder used to say.
    Was very worried about where I would get my continuous jazz and eclectic fix – not anymore.
    In “old school roots” and “house roots” vernacular: Pandora’s da bomb!

  8. the main problem I have on this web page is the use of the web page to transfer music from one station to another ;
    I WOULD FAR LESS STAIONS IF I COULD PUT ALL MY MUSIC ON ONE STATION AND THEN PURCHASE A SINGLE OR DUAL DVD/CD WITH ONLY THE MUSIC I WANT ON IT: I LOVE VARRIOUS ARTIST AND VERY FEW SELECTIONS FOR DIFFERENT OCCATIONS ….SOME SLOW MUSIC FOR ROMANTIC EVENINGS AND UPBEAT FOR EARLY GET AND GO MOMENTS !!!!!MOSTLY I LIKE SMOOTH JAZZ ALL DAY LONG ;

  9. Hey, I have been working with my squeezebox for a while now and I wanted to post something for anyone thinking of buying one (~$300) DON’T
    buy a cheap laptop on craigslist. Between squeezenet and pandora, it can be ‘down’ a lot of the time, you can only rate songs up or down (but not always if it starts acting squirrely!)
    I am a pandora nut so I don’t mind that I got one and it seems to have a lot of problems.. early adopter or something, but you are MUCH better off just getting a cheap laptop from craigslist and hooking it up to your stereo system.. you will have much more control over/info about your pandora stations and songs.
    Worst part will be you won’t have a remote. (but hey, the squeezebox frequently locks up so that the remote becomes useless anyway.)
    also when I got my squeezebox I was FORCED to subscribe to pandora (or my account would expire)
    it’s not that much but… geez thanks a lot. strongarm tactics can breed contempt…

  10. Congratulations I love ur site it’s been a week I found out bout ur site n cant stop listening to it. Can’t wait 4 u to come back to Chicago.
    Keep up the good work! Marisa
