Welcome to Volume 1 of “No Mainstream Fridays,” a weekly listing of songs that are
1. worth listening to
2. probably not being featured elsewhere at the moment
3. would be mainstream if there were such a thing
Without further ado:
“Got to Get the Nerve” by Field Music – for fans of early xtc. My favorite record of the year so far.

“The Fence Feels its Post” by Frog Eyes – sorry, I just can’t explain the complex brilliance of this band. It’s just chills from start to finish… passion from Victoria Island in British Columbia.
“Our Love Lives” by Impossible Shapes – absolute brilliance! every time one of these songs comes on, I freak out.
“Internal Crash” by Loquat – beautiful pop from sf!
“Melody 1” by Tera Melos – incredible instrumental avant indie stuff.
“Crushed Bones” by WHY? – yoni wolf is a hip-hop ray davies!
and speaking of ray davies:
“Dedicated Follower of Fashion” by The Kinks
And from the more recent past:
“Subterranean Homesick Alien” by Radiohead.
I recently listened to OK Computer again and was surprised to discover that I might well think it’s the best record ever made (and yes, that includes the untouchables: Sgt Peppers and Pet Sounds).
Happy Friday!! Have great weekends! And maybe go out this weekend and buy these records, so as to hear these amazing songs in their natural habitat. I’ll post more next Friday!

BC's capital, Victoria, is on "Vancouver Island", not "Victoria Island". ;) Look forward to checking them out though! I'm a local, and have never heard of them!

Newbie here... can't figure out how to listen to the music you've listed here :(((( Or is that the idea? I click on a title, maybe it won't be found (e.g. frog eyes, loquat tunes), but it definitely won't be played. How about a special "no mainstream" radio channel, with just these tunes?????

hey peter. hmm, that's strange that none of the station links are working for you. have you signed up for a pandora account yet? as for a master station combining all the recs, I am definitely going to be doing that, starting this Friday! Thanks for listening! mz

I have an account (same as my email addres), but I'm not a subscriber -- anything I click turns into a radio station but does not play the song. The "One in Six..." song title is not found ... the "Eternal Crash" song is spelled wrong.

OK, that does it. Where I can trade in my stereo receiver for a Squeezebox? I have not listened to "regular" radio (ho-hum) since someone told me about Pandora and here you come with yet ANOTHER reason to eschew the ceaseless Yawn Parade that is FM radio in the DC Metro area. Jay p.s. Did you say "Hip-hop Ray Davies"? Verily, Pandora is endlessly fascinating.

Hi. I think it's a bit harsh to remove an artist after two thumbs down of their songs. Very few artists don't have two or more bad songs I'd want banned from the station, but I don't want to ban their good stuff. At this very moment you are sending me a bad Supremes song: one down, one to go... On the flipside, boy did liking ABBA really sock it to me, I KNOW that's why you sent me the Foreigner, Journey and Asia. You are coy about revealing your motivations, but I know this with the same spidey sense that tells me what I ate that made me vomit. And the sooner I could ban the above three artists, the better. I would like to not have to wait to get smacked with them again. Maybe you could have a ban this artist button? Or would that be bad for us, because then we would never hear their undiscovered gems? But then that would happen anyway if we also didn't like two of their songs, under the present system. Love [lots of it-! despite my nitpicking], Phoebe

Peter, read the FAQ. Or when you click on those songs to start a new station, there is an option saying "Why we're not playing this song".. click that link. Phoebe Love, you should e-mail what you typed up to pandora-support@pandora.com they will read the e-mail, you might not get a response but rest assure it'll get read.

I am obsessed with Pandora...I have told everyone I can about it because it's so incredibly awesome. However, the only complaint that I have about it is that you can either like or dislike the song...what if I think the song is O.K.? And what if these songs are only one bad song of a repretoire of good songs by that artist? Somehow there's got to be a way of hearing other good songs by those artists...anyway, everything else is totally badass. Thanks Pandora!

I heard about Pandora by watching a CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp.) documentary called "The End of Radio". Too bad they didn't warn me then that Canadians couldn't join your service. Now I've had an itsy bitsy taste of this great idea you've got going and it's not nearly enough! I don't even mind paying for a service I enjoy. I still buy CD's darling. I was raised in a small town with a radio station that would play country, pop and rock all in the same hour. That just doesn't happen anymore. I love discovering new songs and artists that rock my world. Too bad for me. Hope you get the right to cross the border soon. There are amazing bands in Canada hope you do lots of listening up here. Best of luck to you, Tricia (who happens to live in Victoria BC which IS on Vancouver Island which many of you already know I'm sure.

Dear Tim & Lucia, I love your site. What a great idea! I can't stop listening. Becasue of the way songs that are "'similar to" are chosen, the system picked stuff I haven't heard in years. I would be nice however, to be able to stick to a single band or artist if that's what you are in the mood for. Other ideas: What about searches by record label, especially independents. There are many small companies out there that produce an unusual mix of music that does not fix into a single category by style of music. Check out: Bang on a Can, a festival, organization and band that creates some of the most interesting music I've ever heard. It is headed by composer David Lang. Cantaolpe Records. They publish most of the Bang on a can stuff. Knitting Factory Record in NYC. Keep up the good work, Craig

Living in Beijing China-- not exactly Music mecca, but I stumbled on this band "Ziyo" last week and think something's there. Cross between Blondie and The Pretenders, Lead singer is hypnotic-- great command. http://www.myspace.com/ziyo Check the Music Download section-- not hard to see what the hit will be-- based on the 10x downloads. Have a listen to it "Too Many Times"-- starts a bit slow but has a nice build and several hooks.

love the proof of complexity & chaos & paradox & serendipity & every theory everyone has about reality. so - being a girl geek & running a management consultancy - in a way that plays with theory and passion and reality - was I pleased to find you guys?????????????????????Oh Yeh so - I found you - and bless ( an irish thing). Love how a few men can make an idea a reality thru passion & hard work. Found you 2 days ago and have networked you to an amazing group of people across 3 continents. Sent the url to a guy friend who is an amazing muso - and he was excited - we are all in the west of ireland. so - I'm having drinks with another girl geek tonight ( and the west of ireland rocks for every age and gender) and she says 'Peter sent me this amazing site and it is....pandora' so - did I tell her that I'd given Pete the link? mmmmmmmmmmm - YES!!!And did she know I had found the link ------nooooooooooooooo What is it about men that they OWN information - Pete and me and my friend are best mates - and he owned the Pandora info without saying to her that I had found the link. Yeh -I hear you -relax Liz - and - I'm an IT geek and so are they and I'd acknowledge an amazing site they had found. Yeh - I have a life -and it is full of great experiences and champers and scarey stuff and risk ....... and the space between 2 trapezes ... and passion .... and real values that are mine and may not be yours. And ... I love the power of music for people like me that aren't afficionados ... music geeks. so ........ for people like me ... IT geeks and music lovers but not really informed ... this site is amazing. And tonight I told complete IT phobes (in an old amazing pub in the west of ireland - yup it's a great life)about Pandora.com ... and they were taking notes!!!!! First principle people - acknowledge your sources - particularly if it's between geek friends - really - do you think we don't talk to each other. xxxxxxx liz

Hi...The local paper Arizona Tribune just had a brief article about on line music and mentioned your web site. I am blown away with the range of music your library contains as I am a lover of jazz singers many of them now no longer with us. You have just changed my listening habits and I have my computer tuned to you as soon as I fire it up. My buddies, most of us seniors are also flipping out over your content. Thank You, Thank you...for setting up such a wonderful site. Between Michael Buble,Dianna Krall, Dinah Washington,Ella, and Joe Williams I am in Jazz Singing heaven...Ned
