Pandora for your Stereo

Update: It’s March 1st, and we’ve launched Pandora + Squeezebox. Click here for all the details.

We’ve got something pretty exciting to share tonight. David Pogue over at the New York Times just broke the news that on March 1st Pandora is coming to the Slim Devices Squeezebox:

“the Squeezebox will do something no other hi-fi component can do: it will hook into Pandora… Slim Devices predicts that Pandora will become a wildly popular feature, and that’s probably true.” (read the entire story)

The Squeezebox, as Pogue’s story attests, is simply the best way to deliver digital music to your home stereo. It’s a beautiful device, with an elegant user interface and exceptional audio quality. Plug it into your home network (wired or wireless) and enjoy Pandora from the comfort of your couch. You’ll be able to listen to all of the stations you’ve been creating at Pandora.com, rate songs, and bookmark favorites all with a simple remote control. Pandora-on-Squeezebox will available to Pandora subscribers ($36 for a year or $12 for three months) and will work with any Squeezebox 2 as well as the new (and very beautiful) Squeezebox 3.
To get you started, on March 1st, Pandora will be offering a free 90 day subscription to new and current Squeezebox 2 and 3 owners. When you connect your Squeezenetwork account with your ad-supported-free Pandora.com account (you’ll do this from your account page at the Squeezenetwork website) we’ll automatically upgrade you to a 90-day-free subscription on Pandora. No credit card required. In the meantime, have fun listening to Pandora online for free.

  1. Pandora for XBMC!!!, I’m sure we would all be willing to pay for this! Also..Pandora should join the CCIA (ccianet.org) and help combat the RIAA and MPAA lobbyists and lawyers!

  2. One more vote for XBMC support. I also have several friends who would use it too. If there are problems releasing a version compiled for XBox, it could be an actual application released on a disc. For that matter it could be released for several different consoles.

  3. @xbmc and @tivo enthusiasts
We’re always looking for new ways to bring you Pandora. In large measure our ability to create these kinds of partnerships comes down to the degree of interest and support offered by our potential platform partners. As some of you mentioned, being able to cover our ever-increasing royalty costs via advertising would be one necessary component of any such partnerships. We cannot reveal any specifics about what platforms we’re working on but there’s a *ton* of exciting stuff coming down the pike so stay tuned!

If you have one of our supported Pandora on the Go mobile devices, this is already possible. Here’s a write-up (although aimed at the iPhone, the methods are exactly the same for all supported devices, including the need for a headphone adapter on most models):

You should definitely talk to your neighbors about this first. Due to the non-trivial amount of bandwidth a continuous Pandora connection may potentially use, it would certainly be poor “netiquette” to attempt this without asking first. But yes, if you can listen to Pandora on your computer, then you can connect your computer to your stereo:

  4. It’s been quiet here for a while, but I would like to voice support for enabling Pandora on XBMC. Now that it has migrated to many platforms (OSX, Windows, Linux, XBox mod) it might be worth another look. While I understand your previous concerns about maintaining an advertising model to cover royalty costs, service fees may address this concern. I am a Pandora One subscriber, and know of others that would be more than happy to pay for the Pandora service to get the convenience of XBMC support, so the ad model may not be an issue.
